District 5, 7, and 8 are all going to have a good team stay home. District 6 is a joke.

Hey! I have seen a fair amount of these teams around Dubuque and you know what? You are correct it is just a weak district. The team that should be the best is probably Hempstead which, even at 2-1, has never looked good. Hard team to figure out as they certainly have the size and the skilled players. Bad team chemistry is what I have been told from people around the program. Given the chemistry issue there is also the issue that their size is slow so fast LBs create problems for them. But still this team should be better.

Western DBQ does not seem to ever dominate people but they have a good QB and a skilled multidimensional receiver/slot player. Solid D line, small DB's which are in trouble against better receivers. Especially teams with big receivers that will just go 10 yards out and set a big target for he QB. The better 4A teams will take them apart.

Senior is another hard to understand team. When the OL plays well, the whole team looks much better. The problem is the term "When". Every game the line takes a break for a quarter or, sometimes, the whole game. Senior lacks a deep threat who can actually catch the ball, so teams start putting 7 guys towards the line. Again, better 4A teams will kill them.

Not yet seen North Scott. But you are correct, it is a weak district.

I wish the state would have went with 6 districts of 8, and then had 4 at large bids, it would have allowed a good third place team to get in, because right now Waterloo West could go 8-1 and miss out on the playoffs, and there is no way to prevent this in 4A

this is why I think they should expand it to 32 teams (because having a bye round is retarded) and have the title game on black friday. I don't get what the fetish is about having things done before thanksgiving. Even in the tropical state of... Connecticut, there state finals are December 12th -ish.

32 of 48? No thanks, might as well put everyone in and push it another week.

i don't think you get it - you can't put everyone in because it isn't divisible by two. Having 32 teams makes it divisible by two so it makes more sense - a round of 16 teams, a round of 8, a round of 4, and the title game with two teams playing each other.

I get it. 1-8, 2-7, 3-6 shouldn't be in the playoffs.

Hmmm? Every single time I divide 48 by 2 it comes up 24. Seems like 48 is divisible by 2. Let me check again...yep, still 24. Always comes up as a whole number...it HAS to be divisible by 2.

I'm sure he meant it has to be able to divide down to get to two. 24 teams play 12 advance than 6 advance then we end up with 3.

We are back to the same argument where in our current playoff format you will have deserving teams left out and that's what happens with only 16, I frankly liked 32 teams and wish they'd either play an extra week in the playoffs or we all just start a week earlier. But if we're going to use the argument that we shouldn't allow non-deserving teams than history shows pretty much the same small group of teams every year so why not just drop it down to 8 teams or even just 4 teams and we'll just fast forward to the Dowling/Valley semi and the Bettendorf/Best of Cedar Rapids semi

Great thread, and sometimes pretty funny (screwloose). District 6 is the weakest district imaginable, but I agree Hempstead should be better with all their athletes. Their QB Crowder is out, so that hurts. Whoever comes out of this district is going to be whomped in the playoffs. Besides, it's a basketball district, so they will get a head start on the round ball season.

Why not? One more game and they're out, or one more game and you see that it was a decent team with a tough schedule. Either way it's not a big deal. The best teams are rewarded with an easy round to get going, middle of the road teams are dealt a tough draw, but at least they are for sure involved.

Thanks for the math lesson, Dragon. I know he meant it had to be a power of 2...I was just being a smartass.

Yup they have to change it. I personally would set it up like this with 48 teams:

Regular Sesason (8 games) You play your 5 district games and 3 non-district (whoever you want to play). No points boost or anything. Rankings at the end of the season are based on Head to head (if no head to head) then your points scored in district play. If still tied, then it goes to Points Allowed. If still tied, then coin flip.

Week 9 (October 21st area) (1st round 32 teams play) (16 in the east, 16 in the west). District champ gets a first round bye (determined by tie breaker rules).

1st round of playoffs (Oct 28th)- gets you down to 32 teams left (old system).
2nd round playoffs (Nov 4th)- Down to 16 teams
3rd round playoffs (Nov 11th) Down to final 8
4th round playoffs (nov 18th) - Semi-finals
Championship round (Nov 25th)- Finals

I have watched several states try and critique this set up. Indiana I do believe allows everyone in the post season, but they have it set up like (districts, sub state and etc). I don't know how that system would work.

I think Iowa has to cut a game back in the regular season (9 games to 8) and then play the championship games on Thanksgiving break. There are also several very nice HS stadiums that could accommodate the HS championships (CR Stadium, Des Moines has some nice stadiums) and I am sure there are others. I would like to see them move from the UNI Dome to an outdoor venue.
