Decorah 2014

South Winn DID beat Waukon in week 1. I agree with you in thinking they would beat Decorah and Union. Where I would challenge is NFV.

NFV and South Winn have one common opponent this season - Waukon. NFV won by 27 while SW won by 22. NFV's only loss was a game when they committed 8 turnovers against a top 10 rated team, only losing by 2. I see that game as a toss-up.

Having seen both, I might also take NFV to beat SW. Ronan is a real difference maker for Waukon and played a half against SW and did not play against NFV. Why does everyone say NFV committed 8 turnovers and give no credit to CPU for forcing them? The Hawks were beaten...but might still pick them over South Winn. As all of football it would come down to who can stop the run.

And SC...you listed 2 Scherbrings for Oelwein (one with a 'c' and one without) and Aldrich, probably a fine player but walking on and leaving early not necessarily a D1 recruit or we could list lots of others for other schools. And who the heck was Warnke going to a D-2 school? Anyway I am absolutely amazed with the talent Oelwein had at the time and have no clue how their season ended up. But that is impressive to have that much talent in a couple years at one of the smaller schools in 3A and now 2A.
How do we end up talking about the talent in Oelwein in a post originally titled "Decorah Overrated"?

My mistake. Only one Scherbring. As far as him being D-1...oh yeah. I tell you think from experience. From what I understood it wasn't football ability that had him leave ISU. Aldrich...he was a man. I'm not sure NE Iowa has truly seen a receiver as good as he has. Warnke was overshadowed by Felder and Scherbring, but make no mistake, he was quite the ball player too. In 2001 Oelwein had three high school offensive linemen that were at least 6' 3" and 295 lbs. And they could move too. How they never won a state title I will never know.

Talent in Oelwein 2002 digression came about as a comparison to the talent in Waukon 2013 digression (I wonder who brought that up?) that some how became a part of the Decorah overrated 2014 thread which had already digressed into a just how great South Winn is in 2014 ... ect. ect. Nothing unusual here, all thread seem to digress at some point. Now, back to Oelwein 2002 In 2002 Oelwein lost to Clear Lake 28-27 in the State Quarterfinals and finished the season at 10-1. At the time, Sanders to Aldrich at Oelwein was one of the most prolific qb to receiver combination in Iowa fb history. Aldrich joined Iowa as a walk on, I don't know how heavily recruited he was or if Aldrich continued playing fb elsewhere after leaving the Iowa program.

CPU absolutely deserves credit, even if NFV made it easy on CPU to earn any of those turnovers. With that said, what is the likelihood that NFV would turn the ball over 8 times against any other opponent this year, or even if they played CPU again? Whether CPU earned them or not, you cannot deny it was a freak occurrence and likely would not be repeated. Likely a rematch would see NFV win by multiple scores.

CPU earned the victory that night, but I question whether NFV is likely to commit 8 turnovers again against any opponent, which is where my belief comes that they would beat SW.

Okay, why I know this much about Oelwein football is scaring me...

I believe Aldrich continued his prolific football receiving on the U of I intramural team and went on to win a national tourney. If someone knows better correct me.

NFV and SW were in the same district last year and NFV beat them twice. (Reg. Season 44-34, Quarterfinals 49-14) Many players from both teams returned this year.
