Beat Bondurant-Farrar in the semifinals (63-46)
Beat Nodaway Valley in the finals (62-54)
Thoughts on
District 1
for the 2005-2005 Season:
With the #2 ranking in the IowaPreps.com pre-season Class 2A rankings,
Battle Creek-Ida Grove is going to be a tough team to beat. Led by All
Stater Casey Harriman, this team is ready to play. Last year they rolled
through an easy regular season schedule before losing to Unity Christian in the
playoffs. This year they have added some tough opponents out-of-state that
will better prepare them for a deep postseason run. Hinton had a solid
year last season and brings back five of their top six scorers. Leading
the charge is Hans Plaats. This senior plays guard and averaged around
twenty points last winter. Lawton-Bronson is making the jump up from Class
1A and will have their struggles against some of these talented teams.
Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto had a good enough season last year to get a home playoff
game but their luck ran out in the second round.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the team that sent them home for the year and they
bring back three of their four top scorers. Nathan Young averaged over
sixteen points per game last year. South O'Brien had a great run last year
but saw their top two scorers graduate. Senior forward Andrew Dau will
have to pick up his scoring. As for Unity Christian, well the team won the
State title last year and return a number of key components off of that team.
Logan Kingma will likely have a huge season as a senior after making a name for
himself at the State tournament. There will be a new coach at the helm
this year after some interesting developments over the off-season.
Westwood is making the bump up from Class 1A and will have a tough time making
any noise int his substate.

Thoughts on
District 2
for the 2005-2005 Season:
With the talent that Hull Western Christian, they are going to be the early
team to beat. Three starters are back and one of them includes All Stater
Mike Eekhoff. This senior averaged nineteen points, nine assists, and five
rebounds. 6-foot-7 bigman Carlie Landegent
also comes back after nearly averaging a double-double. Central Lyon, Rock
Rapids struggled last year to a three win season. And although their top
two scorers graduated, the team does boast a very talented junior class that
will be hoping to turn things around.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn brings back one of the top juniors in Iowa with Jon
Walburg. This 6-foot-5 standout averaged 17.4 points per game on a team
that finished just under .500 last year. Not to be out done, Sheldon also
has an outstanding junior in Stephen Kirschbaum. He may have only averaged
14.4 points per game but he played a major role in his team's 21-4 finish.
The only problem is that outside of Kirschbaum, the team was mostly seniors.
Sibley-Ocheyedan were only able to win three games last winter and the team was
very senior dominated. That does mean that a number of new players will
get their chances but they will also be inexperienced. Sioux Center was
senior dominated and still failed to miss the State tournament. They have
a great basketball tradition and that will help them reload. However it
will be tough with the teams in this district. Need another senior led
team? Look no further than West Lyon. This squad said goodbye to
their top six leading scorers. West Sioux was able to open the playoffs
last year with a win but fell to the eventual champions from Unity Christian.
If they want a chance at revenge, the team must make it to the substate finale.

How
did District 3 do at the State tournament?
Emmetsburg
Lost to Nodaway Valley in the quarterfinals (62-58)
Thoughts on
District 3
for the 2005-2005 Season:
There is an interesting mix of teams in district 3 but the early favorite
appears to be Emmetsburg. They were a sophomore dominated team last winter
and that may carry over into this season. Because of the success of
E-Hawk's athletics, this team will again be athletic. Players to keep an
eye on include Mike Bisenius, Dalston Jones, and Matt Geelan. Algona
Garrigan finished over .500 last year but said goodbye to four of their top five
scorers due to graduation. Returning for the team is Dan Garman.
This talented guard was inconsistent last year and will need to step up his
game. Clarion-Goldfield turned things around on the football field this
fall and will be hoping to do the same in basketball this winter. The team
won six games and brings back their third leading scorer, Jason Harvey.
Eagle Grove has been struggling over the past few years and will see a number of
new varsity players again this year.
Manson NW Webster is another one of those schools that played all seniors last
year. At the time it may have been bad but in the long run it is tough for
this team. Okoboji was an early exit in the playoffs last winter and will
be hoping to change that now. The problem is that is quite the task.
Pocahontas Area made it all the way into the district final last year before
losing out to Emmetsburg. They will be hoping for another shot at the
E-Hawks this year with a substate berth on the line. Sioux Central
finished last year at 18-3 but will have their hands full trying to match that
record.

No teams

Thoughts on
District 4
for the 2005-2005 Season:
With what Osage was returning, they are going to be the team to beat in this
district. The Green Devils bring back all five starters, led by
Nathan Haaland and Kyle Haganman. Osage has
an extremely balanced attack offensively and that helped them to an 18-4 record
last year. Belmond-Klemme struggled all last year but the team was
extremely young. The majority of their players come back and earned a lot
of varsity experience. That will come in-handy if the team wants a major
turn around. Garner-Hayfield was up and down last year but saw their
season end in the first round of the playoffs against Sioux Central. With
two of their top three leading scorers,
Hampton-Dumont may be one team to keep an eye on. Kyle Deboer and Thomas
Kalousek both put up double digits last year and will see bigger roles this
winter. Lake Mills had an outstanding year last season but said goodbye to
a very good player in Joe Woelfel. The Bulldogs do return three of their
top four leading scorers and that will help them in a battle for a district
title. North Iowa is making the bump up from Class 1A and will have their
hands full. Rockford lost their top two leading scorers but does bring
back Tyler Christopherson. He needs to continue to improve if the Warriors
want to turn things around. St. Ansgar only won four games last winter and
will be hoping for a turnaround.

Thoughts on
District 5
for the 2005-2005 Season:
On paper, this district really is up for grabs. There are a few
favorites but time will tell which team is able to stand out at the top.
Waterloo Columbus had a very good graduated senior class that helped the team
into the district finals. Although they lost to Wapsie Valley and may hope
for another matchup this winter, the team will have a much different look.
Denver returns the top individual player in Keith Worner but said goodbye to a
lot of talented seniors. Worner has already signed his Letter of Intent
with Drake and will be looking for a huge senior year. East Buchanan
finished well over .500 but their leaders were all seniors. The Buccaneers
must replace a lot of scoring lost. Jesup struggled last year but will
take a much different look with their new coach. Nashua-Plainfield lost
some very good players to graduation but returns a lot of talented players.
Bigman Alex Kramer is very talented and will be a tough player to matchup with.
North Butler finished last year at 21-2 and will be fighting for the district
title. Luke Brocka is back and will be looking to increase on his 13
points per game from last year. Sumner-Fredricksburg will have a much
different look this season with four started graduating. They must reload
quickly if they want to compete. As for Wapsie Valley, the team will also
have a new look. But with the system in-place for the Warriors, the team
will always be very competitive.

Thoughts on
District 6
for the 2005-2005 Season:
After making the State tournament two years ago, Aplington-Parkersburg
struggled to a four win season. Tommy Koenen is back after putting up
fifteen points per game as a junior. Belle Plaine graduated All Stater
Kyle Spading and his athleticism will be greatly missed. Point guard Tyler
Johnson is back and should help this squad. Center Point-Urbana is always
loaded with athletes and that will again be the case this winter. But the
Stormin' Pointers still only won six games last year and lost their top scorers.
Dike-New Hartford will be young as Tigh Bakker was their leading scorer last
year. This standout is only a junior and still averaged double digits.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck also was led last year by a sophomore in scoring. This
honor belonged to Tyson Dirks, who averaged just over ten points per game.
Grundy Center had an outstanding finish last year and saw their three top
scorers graduate. With that in-mind, the new will be inexperienced this
season. Hudson had a .500 year and will be hoping to improve. Gone
are their top two scorers but returning is Clay Hildman. Hildman is a
senior who averaged eight points per game. Union-LaPorte City graduated
four starters and a lot of talent. Overall this district is a mess.
There are so many teams that could perform well and finish at the top or bottom
of the district.

How
did District 7 do at the State tournament?
Clayton Ridge
Lost to AGWSR in the quarterfinals (61-37)
Thoughts on
District 7
for the 2005-2005 Season:
Similar to district #6, just about anything can happen here. Central
Elkader did some serious damage in the postseason and made it all the way into
the substate finals. The problem is that they lost a dramatic double
overtime thriller to SCMT. Now the Warriors have been bumped up to Class
2A and will have a huge challenge ahead of themselves. Clayton Ridge had a
great run last year to make the State tournament but did not come to play at
Vets. Despite the loss, this Eagle's team had a great year. Gone
from that team are five starters and the squad will have a new look. MFL
MarMac lost their first game in the postseason and will be hoping to extend
their season this time around. North Fayette had a home playoff game but
still couldn't get past their first matchup with Turkey Valley. The team
will have some solid athletes but they have a lot of work to do. South
Winneshiek brings back one of the biggest athletes in Iowa with Noah Lienau.
This senior stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 290 pounds. That alone will give
opponents a tough test. Starmont brings back the best player in this
district with David Trumblee. As a junior, he led the team in scoring but
the majority of the team graduated. And with a lot of question marks with
the coach, the Stars may have a tough time making any serious noise.
Turkey Valley won their first playoff game before bowing out to Clayton Ridge.
Will they get another shot at them this year? Elgin Valley finished over
.500 last winter and brings back some solid players. Leading the way is
Cody Lerch. Overall, predicting this district may be even harder than
picking district #6.

How
did District 8 do at the State tournament?
Dyersville Beckman
Lost to Unity Christian in the quarterfinals (56-50)
Thoughts on
District 8 for the 2005-2005 Season:
On paper, the obvious favorite in this district has to be Northeast
Gooselake or Monticello. The Rebels bring back four starters including
Dylan Diedrich. This junior scored seventeen points per game and is one of
the best shooters in Iowa. Dyersville-Beckman made the State tournament
last winter but lost the majority of their players to graduation. The team
had a great senior class and nearly upset Unity Christian in the first round but
they just didn't have enough. Bellevue may find it tough this year to beat
city rival Marquette but the team hopes to make it competitive. The Comets
lost their first round playoff matchup against Dyersville Beckman. Cascade
only returns two starters but both players averaged double digits.
Bryan Brackemyer will be the leader
of this team as he should be improved over last year. Maquoketa Valley
returns Donny Nordmann but little else from their great overall season.
Nordmann scored twelve points per game but must take over as the leading scorer
this winter. Midland was another team hit hard by graduation and also
returns only one starter. That player,
Scott Willimack, stands 5-foot-9 and put up 10.3
points per game as a junior. Monticello has four starters returning and a
number of these are outstanding athletes.
Danny Freese and Keith Heckroth averaged thirteen points
per game on a team that finished 16-6. The Panthers will be a tough squad
to beat. North Linn was a .500 team last year but graduated their top
three leading scorers.

How
did District 9 do at the State tournament?
Davenport Assumption
Lost to Carroll in the quarterfinals (77-63)
Thoughts on
District 9
for the 2005-2005 Season:
They may end up coming into substate with a 5-15 record but the favorite may
still be Davenport Assumption. The Knights will be young but will peak at
the end of the year and because they play in the MAC Conference, that
competition may give them a serious advantage. Camanche will be trying to
turn it around this year but graduated most of their top scorers. Durant
is a very good team led by Ross Petersen. The Wildcats also return three
other starters off of a team that finished 15-9 in the tough Eastern Iowa
Hawkeye Conference. With Ben Crowe heading into his senior year at Mount
Vernon, the Mustangs have a chance in every game. The big question mark
there is will anyone else step up around him? I personally would expect
this senior to put up over twenty points per game.
Pat Kedley enters his 31st year as head coach at
North Cedar and the team will be well coached and disciplined as usual.
Alex Dittmer averaged 19.5 points as a junior and will improve on those numbers.
Solon lost bigman Chris Mensen to football at Minnesota but brings back all four
other starters. Matt Lesan poured in eighteen points per game as a
sophomore and those will be even better this winter. Tipton will be among
the youngest teams in Iowa but the future is very bright for the Tigers.
Keep an eye on Mike and Mark Lafrenz. These two talented twins are very
skilled. Wilton saw a very talented class graduate over the off-season but
will return some very solid athletes.

Thoughts on
District 10
for the 2005-2005 Season:
When looking how tough district #9 is, one could quickly question why some
of those teams were not separated into this district. But if there is one
team not complaining, that would be Iowa City Regina. The Regals have four
starters back, including Mike O'Connell and
Jonathan Bothell. A number of athletes on
the team are also coming off of a state title on the football field and that may
hurt Regina early in the year. Columbus Junction struggled to only four
wins last winter and will be hoping to change that. With the players that
Louisa-Muscatine has returning, they may be able to surprise people. Scott
Reist and Kyle Guldenpfennig are two players who can score and will they will be
better with another year of experience under their belts. Mediapolis has a
playoff win under their belt from last winter but couldn't get past Danville in
the next round. Speaking of Danville, the Bears will once again have a new
look at the varsity level but do return a double-digit scorer in
Eric Nelson. Only four
players return with much varsity experience. When thinking about some of
the top sophomores in Iowa, one player who gets overlooked is Davis Spielbauer
of Wapello. He may be small but he has great handles and is a coaches son.
West Branch faces major changes this year with a new coach but Caleb Walter will
help ease the transition. This standout athlete put up big numbers as a
junior. West Burlington was one and done last winter in the playoffs.
Can they change that this year? West Liberty always has a lot of talented
and physical athletes but they must prove that they are basketball players.

How

Mid-Prairie
Lost to Bondurant-Farrar in the quarterfinals (61-41)
Thoughts on
District 11
for the 2005-2005 Season:
Another district that makes you wonder who is pairings things up, but the
early favorites on paper appear to be Mid-Prairie and Pekin. Mid-Prairie
found a way to beat Pella Christian in the substate final and finally made it
back to the State tournament. All Stater Travis Kern is now playing at
Truman State and that means Josh Berry must step his game. This senior had
a great football season and hopefully that momentum can carry over into
basketball. Pekin didn't have quite the same success as that last year but
they have two starters returning who averaged over ten points per game and a lot
of talented youth. The Panthers were 11-11 last year. Central Lee
had an outstanding start to the 2004-2005 season and made it all the way to the
district finals. While there, Mid-Prairie dominated the game and won by 26
points. Will that revenge factor come back this year? Eddyville-Blakesburg
had some serious struggles last year but does bring back Derek McIntyre.
Sigourney was defeated all last year but on paper returns the most players.
Ryne Schwenke nearly averaged a double-double. Van Buren finished just
.500 and returns junior Clint Cunningham. But the team must prove that
others can step up around him. Aaron Genners of Cardinal Eldon is back and
he averaged seventeen points per contest. Heading into his junior year,
look for his numbers to improve. Davis County lost four of their top five
leading scorers but senior is Jon Swaim. This talented guard improved as
the season went on.

How
did District 12 do at the State tournament?
Bondurant-Farrar
Beat Mid-Prairie in the quarterfinals (61-41)
Lost to Unity Christian in the semifinals (63-46)
Lost to AGWSR in the consolation game (68-60)
Thoughts on
District 8 for the 2005-2005 Season:
On paper, why would the high school association put so many top flight teams
in district #12 and less in district #11? Whoever takes this district
title will have earned it by the time everything is said and done. The two
early favorites are Bondurant-Farrar and PCM-Monroe. Both teams are
accustomed to deep playoff runs, especially PCM-Monroe. The Mustangs
return two potential in All Staters in Grant Burns and Joey Terpstra. This
duo averaged well over thirty points per game last winter.
Bondurant-Farrar returns one of the best players in Iowa with Kerwin Dunham.
This future UNI Panther is finally a senior and can flat out stroke the ball.
Bigman Brad Lowe is also very talented and can score. B-G-M struggled last
year and were blown out in their only playoff game. That loss to Waterloo
Columbus was not pretty. Colfax-Mingo was another team that was one and
done in the postseason. Their season was ended by West Marshall.
C-M-B was able to win one game last year midway through the season but that was
it. The team struggled to a 1-20 finish. Montezuma had an
outstanding season on the basketball court and made it all the way to the
district final. However with the game in Pella, the Braves could not knock
off Pella Christian. Speaking of the Eagles, they were a very senior
dominated team. This version will be very inexperienced and young but they
will be talented. This team has a chance to make title runs in the next
few years. The problem is that this team will be young.
Pleasantville finished around .500 last winter and graduated their top three
scorers. That scoring will be tough to replace.

Beat Bondurant-Farrar in the consolation game (68-60)
Thoughts on
District 13
for the 2005-2005 Season:
When you have the pre-season #1 team as rated by IowaPreps.com, it is
obvious that they are the favorite to get out of district play. That team,
AGWSR, finished last season as the third best in Class 2A and returns a bulk of
their scoring. Leading the way is two-time All Stater Corey Viet.
This senior can score both inside and outside. The Cougars will be a tough
team to upset, especially in the postseason. Continuing with another
initial team, BCLUW saw one of the most prolific scorers in their history
graduate. That player, David Walters, moved on to Wayne State and the team
will not be the same without him. East Marshall finished under .500 last
winter but center Trent Mullikin is back in the fold. This 6-foot-5 senior
averaged double-digits. Eldora-New Providence had a home game in the
postseason yet still could not get past South Hamilton in the first round.
Gilbert lost point guard Dan Clark but does bring back leading scorer Loren
Liming. As a junior, this bigman averaged thirteen points and eight
rebounds per contest. Outside of AGWSR, Roland Story has one of the most
talented players in Jack Bruns. This sophomore started last year and put
up some solid numbers. Bruns kept busy on the AAU circuit during the
off-season and will be even better. South Hamilton enters into the Coach
Jeff Steines era as he begins his first year. A lot of seniors graduated
from last year but bigman and standout football player Brent Johnson does
return. He put up ten points per game as a sophomore. West Marshall
looked good last year finishing at 15-8 but lost all five starters to
graduation. With only two players coming back with experience, this could
be a rebuilding year for the Trojans.

Thoughts on
District 14 for the 2005-2005 Season:
On paper, district #14 looks like a two team battle. Ogden and Fort
Dodge St. Edmonds are those two squads and they may have another great game if
they see each other in the postseason. Ogden must have their guard core
step up after Jake Oeth and others graduated. But the Bulldogs do return
two of the top bigmen in Iowa with Kyle Swanson and Zach Twedt. The duo is
very difficult to guard because of their skill and size. Fort Dodge St.
Edmond has a ton of talent including four returning starters and one of the best
bigmen in Iowa with Andy Nagel. Only a sophomore, Nagel came off the bench
last year and will likely move into the starting lineup. Also keep
an eye on Sam Condon and Josh Bradley. Audubon
returns four starters off of a team that went 21-3. Offensively the team
is very balanced and that makes it tough for the opposition to key on one
player.
Jefferson-Scranton may have the best pure athlete in the district with Ronnie
Wright. This senior is a freak athlete who averaged fifteen points per
game as a junior. The problem is very few players return around him with
experience. North Polk finished under .500 but does bring back their
second leading scorer in Kelee Harmeyer. This senior must improve if the
Comets can turn things around. With Shane Allen back for another year,
Prairie Valley will have a very tough player to defend. This All Stater on
the football field put up over twenty points per game. His teammates must
be able to score around him. Junior guard Ben Heasley will be the leader
for Woodward-Granger this winter. He averaged twelve points per game
despite playing against older competition. Panorama was a very young team
last year and may be able to surprise this winter.

Thoughts on
District 15 for the 2005-2005 Season:
After playing in the State tournament game, the early favorite must be
Nodaway Valley. The team may have lost Eric Raasch and others to
graduation but there is still talent on this roster. Time will tell good
the team is but the pieces are there. Bedford finished right under .500
last year but brings back leading scorer Justin Miller. At the forward
position, Miller knows how to score. Clarinda Academy had an up and down
year and will have their hands full trying to make an impact in a Class 2A
district. Chase Crill returns for Corning as well as leading scorer Blake
Freml. Griswold lost their first game of the playoffs and lost it badly to
Red Oak last season. Taking the same path to end their season was Mount
Ayr. They fell to Nodaway Valley 78-42. And a third doing the feat?
That honors belongs to Interstate-35, who fell to Central Decatur. The
positive is that the Roadrunners only lost by four. West Central Valley
graduated their top four leading scorers off of a team that went 15-7. The
squad does return bigman Cory Moore.

Thoughts on
District 8 for the 2005-2005 Season:
This district may completely be up for grabs. Logan-Magnolia finished
the 2004-2005 season at 1-21 and will hope to rebuild. Missouri Valley
nearly won their first game of the new year but saw leading scorer John Lorenzen
have a huge game. This standout athlete is going to be a very good player.
Red Oak will have a much different look this winter with so many players
graduated but the team has some standout athletes. Andy Jennings was a
two-time All Stater on the football field and is back. Oakland Riverside
was a senior dominated team that will be playing a number of inexperienced
preps. Council Bluffs St. Albert doesn't play in a conference but the team
is very talented. Sophomore Marc
Baumert led the team in scoring last year and will be looking to improve on his
eleven points per game.
Shenandoah played one game in the playoffs last year and lost. Tri-Center
has a chance to be very good this winter. The Trojans were 17-6 last year
and brings back an outstanding sophomore in
Kurt Spomer. Players around him will need to
step up but he has a bright future. Underwood graduated their top two
scorers but welcomes back Stephen Bracker.

District 1
for the 2005-2005 Season:

District 2
for the 2005-2005 Season:

How

Lost to Nodaway Valley in the quarterfinals (62-58)
District 3
for the 2005-2005 Season:

Thoughts on
District 4
for the 2005-2005 Season:

District 5
for the 2005-2005 Season:

How

Dyersville Beckman
Lost to Unity Christian in the quarterfinals (56-50)

District 9
for the 2005-2005 Season:

District 10
for the 2005-2005 Season:

How
did District 8 do at the State tournament?

Lost to AGWSR in the consolation game (68-60)

District 13
for the 2005-2005 Season:

Lost to Unity Christian in the championship game (62-54)
Thoughts on
District 15 for the 2005-2005 Season:
