Nothing is guaranteed, but PC (District #10) has a pretty favorable draw. The best teams in their district (aside from them) are Centerville (#23) and Albia (#30) according to BCMoore. Opposite them in District #9 are a bunch of teams ranked lower. The two highest are Highland-Riverside (#39) and Regina (#40).

PC avoided Des Moines Christian, which landed in District #11.

No one can sleep walk through district and sub-state play, but the path is very open for PC.

Des Moines Christian (#4 in BC Moore) and South Hamilton (#5) in the same substate seems like a bad deal. Although I would like to how DMC, which lost to undefeated #20 Van Meter by 11 points, is still ranked so much higher.

I'm not necessarily a basketball expert, but District 11 certainly doesn't look easy to me. PCM looks good. And don't sleep on East Marshall.

PCM has 4 losses to Pella Christian, Pella, South Hamilton and Nevada (Combined record of 40-8) and East Marshall has 3 losses to AGWSR, Jesup and Lynnville-Sully (Combined record of 33-5) (Outscored by 15 points total in those 3 losses)

So I see 3 really good teams there.

I'll go sub-state by sub-state

#1
Typical NW Iowa meat grinder, my guess is that Western Christian and Sheldon play for a trip to state

#2
Osage and GHV look like the class here

#3
Four teams here I could see making it, DNH, Jesup, MFL, and Cascade

#4
District 7 is the by far the harder half with Camanche and NE Goose Lake

#5
I'd be really surprised if someone besides Pella Christian came from this group

#6
As mentioned earlier in the thread 3 or 4 good teams here I honestly see East Marshall making it now that they have the transfer from Grinnell playing

#7
Van Meter and after that it is weak

#8
Kuemper, and after that it seems weak as well

My predictions:

Substate #1 - Western Christian defeats Sioux Center
Substate #2 - GHV defeats Osage
Substate #3 - Cascade over D-NH
Substate #4 - Camanche beats West Burlington
Substate #5 - PC defeats IC Regina
Substate #6 - DMC over South Hamilton (although East Marshall is a player)
Substate #7 - Van Meter beats AHSTW
Substate #8 - Kuemper over Alta

State Match-ups:

#1 Western Christian vs. #8 Van Meter
#2 Pella Christian vs. #7 Camanche
#3 Kuemper vs. #6 Des Moines Christian
#4 Cascade vs. #5 GHV

My predictions:

Substate #1 - Western Christian defeats Sioux Center
Substate #2 - GHV defeats Osage
Substate #3 - Cascade over D-NH
Substate #4 - Camanche beats West Burlington
Substate #5 - PC defeats IC Regina
Substate #6 - DMC over South Hamilton (although East Marshall is a player)
Substate #7 - Van Meter beats AHSTW
Substate #8 - Kuemper over Alta

State Match-ups:

#1 Western Christian vs. #8 Van Meter
#2 Pella Christian vs. #7 Camanche
#3 Kuemper vs. #6 Des Moines Christian
#4 Cascade vs. #5 GHV
I may be a little biased but after tonight's game against New London I don't think West Burlington is gonna lose a sub state game 3 years in a row

My predictions:

Substate #1 - Western Christian defeats Pocahontas Area
Substate #2 - Garner-Hayfield-V over Osage
Substate #3 - Dike-New Hartford defeats Beckman Catholic
Substate #4 - Camanche over West Burlington
Substate #5 - Pella Christian defeats Iowa City Regina
Substate #6 - DM Christian over South Hamilton
Substate #7 - AHSTW defeats Van Meter
Substate #8 - Kuemper Catholic over East Sac County

My predictions:

Substate #1 - Western Christian defeats Pocahontas Area
Substate #2 - Garner-Hayfield-V over Osage

Substate #5 - Pella Christian defeats Iowa City Regina
Substate #6 - DM Christian over South Hamilton
Substate #7 - AHSTW defeats Van Meter
Substate #8 - Kuemper Catholic over East Sac County

Pocahontas over Sheldon/SiouxCenter/Unity ?? Whoa. That would be an upset IMO that I don't see happening.

That's why they play the games! I do agree it would be an upset but if Spirit Lake can beat Western Christian (Way early in the season) then anything can happen. Poky took Spirit Lake to OT on the road last week and honestly had every shot to win. This will be fun to watch unfold.

Agree, but a small upset.
Poky has a good big man and a couple good shooters. Weaker schedule hurts them.
SC & Unity are soooo inconsistent this year. Wouldn't want to bet on or against them.
I still have Sheldon as the slight favorite.

Western does not have a cakewalk either. Rock Valley or West Lyon could easily take them down on an off shooting night.

Wednesday, Feb. 1 is when the coaches meet in each district to determine the seeds. I'm guessing the association doesn't release the pairings until Monday, Feb. 6 at the earliest. It says in the postseason manual, pairings will be released the first week of Feb,

Curious to see if conference coaches will collude (either on purpose or sub-consciously) to advance each other?
Looks like a lot of districts have a majority of 1 conference. Will the outsider get pitted against the favorite more often?

D1 will be incredibly tough to seed.
D2 will have RV & WL on the opposite side of the bracket from Western.

2A Substate 1 is shaping up to be a slugfest again.
West Lyon is probably playing the best ball right now, but at least 5 I could see making the 2A finals.
Western still has to be the favorite over a bunch of Siouxland teams.
Was told that Western has not lost a regular season game to a 2A school in 6 years.

I would love to see the game if West Lyon and Western Christian play each other. Western's history of success will likely give them an advantage, but I've had multiple people from that area say that they would not be surprised if West Lyon won.

Western has knocked WL out of the football playoffs the last two years so you'd think they'd really be gunning to flip the tables on that. The way it sounds WL likes to get out and run. So does Western. It would be interesting to see that track meet. WC would maybe slow it down if WL struggles in the half court. They are pretty good in the half court and still get to the rim, even without a big down low. I hope that matchup happens.

What are everybody's thoughts on the rubber match for Sioux Center vs. Sheldon in the 2nd round? The first time these two played was very early in the season but a great game by all accounts. Sheldon was terrible from behind the arc the second time they played, going 1/21. Sheldon also only had 4 guys in the scoring column with Boerhave only scoring 6 points. Merley was also 0/8 from 3 which I doubt happens again. Hopefully the third match up is a better contest!

Sioux center by 8+

So we've established that 12 of the top 22 come from 2 of the 8 Substates, leaving 10 for the remaining 6 Substates. This means mathematically, some Substates only have 1 in the top 22. Anyone getting an "EZ Pass" to state?

I love numbers!!!!

BCMoore ranks each district. District 9 is the weakest of the 16, and they're opposite District 10 which outside of Pella Christian has little interference. There's no easy pass, but there are easier paths.

As stated on here before substate 1 is stacked. Was looking through West Lyon/Rock Valley's path. First they play each other, then winner gets Western, and if they get by Western they will probably get Sheldon or Sioux Center in substate. Doesn't get tougher than that in 2A.

The WL vs RV tonight is fun and brutal at the same time. Coach DeJong and Coach VanderMaten were teammates in the 2003 BoydenHull State championship team and now they're coaching against each other in the district semifinal. Both coaches know defense and that comes from the BH system. The first matchup this year was a physical low scoring game with RV on top. The second saw WL win in overtime. Looking forward to hearing about this game later. Unfortunately only one can move on. I'll take WL by 5 or less. On the other side, you have Sioux center getting Sheldon(conference champ) at Sioux center. Sioux center is on a 3 game losing streak to end the season and Sheldon is coming off the conference championship. Will also be a big big matchup and unfortunately only one can prevail. My head says Sheldon, but my heart will take Sioux center by 6 or less. Can't make it to either game because, like so many, I am under the weather. I've heard some huge numbers of kids home sick from local schools and I hope these players can stay healthy through tournaments. Good luck to all, and if western wants to lay an egg tonight, go right ahead LOL. (Won't happen btw)

I would not want to wager on 3 out of the 4 Substate 1 games.
Unity is playing well & will give Poky a game.
Still surprised that Sioux Center got to host Sheldon.

Guessing game 1 of the double-header at Western (West Lyon/Rock Valley) will be the good game to watch.
Western playing Estherville for the 3rd time this year (23 & 32 pt victories)

My crystal ball is telling me this

Unity over Poky by 5-7 points
Sheldon wins a nail biter over Sioux Center
West Lyon wins over Rock Valley by double digits
Western too much for E-LC and wins BIG +25

District Championship
Unity will get beat by Sheldon but close (7-10 points)
West Lyon will win a nail biter over Western (3 points)

Substate
West Lyon beats Sheldon (by 5 points)

I can see where the seeding is in question. However at the time of the seeding vote, SC and Sheldon had almost identical records, but SC had just beat Sheldon by 17. If the seeding took place the day after the regular season, Sheldon no doubt would be the 1 seed. More interesting will be if Unity can knock off Poky, that will prove they probabaly should never have had the 1 seed no matter what their record was. Tonight will be crazy!

All I heard out of that was, "WL beat Western!" :)

Jayz have you watched Western Christians team play? What are your thoughts on them? Who can play with them in the Districts?

Yes I've seen em. Not your typical western team because they don't have a tall monster in the middle like they've had for a number of years. But I've seen a lot of teams win the state championship in 1A and 2A with no one taller than 6'2" and western could be no different. My honest opinion is they are very good and quite a few players have been playing since their sophomore year so they have experience. They can beat you a number of ways which is typical for western basketball. Not sure where you are from, but I'm telling you West Lyon, Sheldon, Rock Valley, and Sioux Center could do damage in Des Moines. And I can see any one of these teams giving western a serious run for their money. They could win their district final by one and win their substate by 15. Or vice versa. . But I just don't see western losing in the end. And if someone beats them, you bet your butt they will have earned that. Now having said that, I cheer for the Minnesota Vikings, and anyone who plays western Christian. :). (All in competitive love VanDer hoops)
