Here are my thoughts for 1A. Like I said for Class A this is just to get a little discussion going during the long boring summer months.

District 1

Favorite: OABCIG
Top Challenger: Hinton

Overall the top teams in this district last year were very young so I think you will see the same teams be successful. I put OABCIG as the favorite because they return a bunch and seemed to take the district pretty easily last year. After that I could see Hinton, West Sioux or Ridge View being a top challenger. I am interested to see Ridge View under the leadership of Brian Wilken, how does he adapt back to the 11 man game, because I feel he is a very good coach.

District 2

Favorite: Emmetsburg
Top Challenger: Manson NW Webster

Emmetsburg was the best team in this district last year and honestly by a wide margin. They were overall a young team so I expect them to win the district again. Manson NW Webster kind of fell into the 2 spot last year, and return quite a bit as well so I would think they should be improved as well. For the final two spots I think Pokey, East Sac and Sioux Central are all in contention.

District 3

Favorite: Dike New Hartford
Top Challenger: Sumner Fredericksburg

This district was a blood bath last year. I took DNH because to me they were very close to being a dome team but just couldn’t quite get over a couple of humps and with the experience they return I think they take this district. Of the teams remaining I like SF, I think the fact that some younger kids got experience with some injuries last year will be beneficial but they do lose some studs. I still think MFL will be good, I just don’t know what they have coming up to replace what they lost.

District 4

Favorite: Grundy Center
Top Challenger: South Hardin

Grundy is the back to back state champion and while they do lose some impressive talent, I also think that they will just reload and take this district again. After them I think there are a lot of questions, I took South Hardin because they seemed to grow as the season went on, but I am not sure what they have up front. Columbus lost a ton to graduation, Hudson is always solid, and Alburnett was young last year and couldn’t seem to get out of their own way. I think any of those 4 could honestly finish second.

District 5

Favorite: Wilton
Top Challenger: Regina

District 5 is a district of 3 haves and 3 have nots. I think with what Wilton brings back they should be the favorite, they aren’t run away favorites but none the less favorites. I put Regina in the 2 spot just because I think they have a few more questions answered. I think West Branch will be good as always, but I am interested to see what they look like this fall. As for the forth spot I think it comes down to Beckman and Cascade again.

District 6

Favorite: Pella Christian
Top Challenger: Sigourney Keota

District 6 is another district with a clear top half and bottom half. I guess for me I trust Pella Christian and SK more then Pleasantville, although I do think the Trojans return some nice pieces that might take them to a district crown, but right now I would take PC with what they bring back and SK is always tough. As for the 4th spot I would lean EBF but I don’t see any of those teams being very good.

District 7

Favorite: South Hamilton
Top Challenger: Woodward Granger

I think South Hamilton has built their program into one that will be contending for a district title every year. They aren’t flashy and might not be a state title contender but will always play solid football. I think Woodward Granger checks the most boxes after them, bringing back many contributors from a decent team last year. After those two I think it is probably Ogden and West Central Valley for the other two spots.

District 8

Favorite: AHSTW
Top Challenger: Underwood

I went back and forth between AHSTW and Underwood, and honestly Treynor as well. I just think that all three programs are very good, but AHSTW brings back the most experience. Underwood has just been reloading lately so they very well may do it again and win the district, and like I said Treynor should be solid as well. For the fourth spot I lean towards Shenandoah but just like so many 1A districts there is a big drop from 3 to 4

My Top 10

1. Grundy Center
2. Dike New Hartford
3. Wilton
4. OABCIG
5. AHSTW
6. Emmetsburg
7. Regina
8. Sigourney Keota
9. Underwood
10. South Hamilton

Grundy Center has been really strong for like 5 years now. Interesting as it is really not an ideal location (suburb to somewhere); it really is in the middle of no where.

Dike plays Grundy week #1 of the 2024 season. All eyes will be on this game. Dike returns more starters, but Grundy always finds a way to win.

Another interesting game in Week 1 will be IC Regina, and their new head coach, traveling to West Liberty, to take on their former head coach, on West Liberty's new turf field.

Didn't realize Regina opened the season against WL. There will definitely be plenty for the sports writers to cover to start 2024

I think the Gazette is about as accurate as any of the polls. KJ, Jeff J and and Jeff L do a good job and do their research.

IA Football seems way off. I believe there were several teams that were beat badly by unranked teams and IA Football still had the loser ranked and the blowout winner wasn't ranked.
(Ex. Wat. Columbus ranked but Beckman wasn't, and South Hamilton was ranked and South Hardin wasn't)

I'm not sure how you put Wilton at #2, when they needed a 4th quarter comeback to beat Mid-Prairie at home.

Very true, I don't think Wilton should be #2, I still think DNH and Underwood ( even with losses) should be 2 & 3, Emmetsburg #4, OABCIG #5, Wilton #6.

Underwood losing by 10pts (17-7) to defending 2A state champ Van Meter is a quality loss. I was thinking DNH might beat GC this year, but looks like GC is a clear cut favorite to repeat as of now

I would agree, CR Gazette is the best poll, Radio Iowa after a week or two isn't too bad either.

I also don't see Wilton beating Mid Prairie 19-14 as a bad thing, Mid Prairie is a 2A school that returns a pretty decent QB, a 1000 yard rusher, their top receiver, quite a few lineman, and about 1/2 their defense.

Surprised that DMC throttled Pella Christian as they did. PC was noted by PNation as likely winner of their district this year.

Yeah I thought that score was a typo!
The scores that surprised me were PC vs DMC, Wat Columbus vs Beckman, S Hardin vs. S Hamilton and Central Springs vs. MC Newman

I am not surprised DMC won, but by 56 that was shocking, I would probably give SK the advantage now, but they got hammered pretty good as well (PCM is very good as well). I will also say DMC is growing rapidly they will probably be a 3A next cycle and could be trending towards 4A in football. Columbus is really going to struggle with numbers and are a little down this year after what they graduated. South Hardin winning by 33 is surprising, but I do think that they are a very good team with a bunch returning, South Hamilton will be fine, and benefit from the district that they are in, and Central Springs beat Newman last year so not surprising at all.

DMC scrimmaged ACGC. From what I heard when asking a friend what SW Iowa looks like, he stated DMC got handled in the varsity match-up. Only adds to the surprise of that PC score.

Word on the street is that Oelwein is forfeiting to Sumner-Fredericksburg this week due to injuries.

I get where Oelwein is coming from, it looks like they only have 35 kids out and quite a few of them are freshman, but it's also a hardship for SF both in terms of not being able to play a game, but also losing the gate and concession money from 1 out of 4 games.

Big game between 2A #1 West Lyon and 1A #2 OABCIG. This should tell us if OABCIG is a legit top #3 team if they can win or keep it close. They certainly have a top notch QB in Kolar and WR in DeJean

Twice, right? Can’t just drive into the ground once for a big hop.
The officials didn’t specify that, just that it had to hit the ground. Good battle on Friday between Regina-Mepo. Hope the official that left in an ambulance is better.

Best 1A games this week?

AHSTW vs Underwood
Dike NH vs Sumner-Fred
Beckman vs Wilton
South Hardin vs Alburnett

I'll take Underwood, DNH, Wilton and South Hardin

Looked it up. Has to be a pop up kick (doesn’t hit the ground) or hit at least twice. Of course on the pop up (pooch) kick you risk the receiving team calling fair catch. If only hits once it’s blown dead and a 5-yard penalty is assessed.

It was a pop up kick so it should have been good?

Cedar Rapids Gazette has them ranked #8 & #9. I live in the eastern half of Iowa and don't know these teams all that well, why do you think it will be lop-sided and who do you believe will win big?

Underwood wins. Probably a bit early to have confidence they will win big, but giving Underwood style points due to the last 3+ years of play, lean toward a win by a big margin.

You think Wilton is going to come to Regina and beat them in the final game of the season? I guess we'll see...
Similar scenario last season and Regina went to undefeated Wilton and smoked them.
Wilton hasn't beaten Regina in at least 20 years.

I think Wilton gets beat by a young WB team looking ahead to a show down with Regina the week after

Districts 3 and 5 could go a number of ways. Probably throw District 1 in there also. Lots of depth in those districts, one good or bad night will shape the order of the top 4.

To me Wilton vs Regina is a toss up, I picked Wilton before the season so I'm sticking with them, with my predictions Wilton and Regina are pretty interchangeable. I do think that there is a gap between them and West Branch this year though, then Beckman and Cascade both appear to be improved I might take Beckman just because I know Cascade has virtually no depth.

I agree with District 1 and 3 being toss ups, District 3 I think DNH, MFL or SF could all win it, then Denver is a step back. District 1 I think OABCIG is the best team, but not dominate by any means and West Sioux and Ridge View have very good coaches as well. All three of the top teams have State Championship coaches.

Right, Wilton plays Regina Week 8. Wilton looks ahead to Regina showdown loses to WB in West Branch
Not sure on that one. But, hey, I'd take it.
Wilton has 75% of their starters back for the third consecutive season. They've got exponentially better each year.

As mentioned, WB is a very young team (except on the OL). They could be better in 2025 than 2024, I think.
