Against nearly all odds, Heaven Chandler of Columbus is returning to defend her 2A Long Jump title by finishing 3rd at Tipton Friday night. Chandler had brought home 8 state medals and a pair of class 2A long Jump titles in her 3 trips to the state meet. Chandler fully expected to compete for a medal in at least 4 events in 2013.

Unfortunately, Chandler suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee late last summer playing basketball. During the resulting surgery, the doctor inadvertently cracked her kneecap which required several screws to be inserted and a longer rehab. After missing Volleyball, Basketball and most of the track season due to rehab trips to Iowa City, Chandler made her first practice jump the last week of April. With the screws yet to be removed, Friday evening at Tipton, Chandler was able to jump 16' 1" to qualify for her 4th trip to Des Moines in defense of her title.

How does one expect to compete for a medal in AT LEAST 4 events. Last time I checked one could compete in a MAXIMUM of 4 events.

Nice story though and best of luck to her. Not sure where she will find the additional 2 feet she needs to win, but would be amazing if she did.

mfp that's a great story she is a amazing athlete no doubt.
I've enjoyed watching her and her sister over the years and very nice kids besides.
