Carlisle Middle School teacher and varisty softball coach Jim Flaws was arrested on drug charges Thursday.
Flaws, 55, of Des Moines, was charged with possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to a press release from the Carlisle School District, Flaws is currently on administrative paid leave as the district investigates the situation.
Flaws salary for the 2014-2015 school year is $56,367.
Media inquiries are being directed to superintendent Bryce Amos who said the press release "is the only thing I'm giving to the media outlets."
When asked if there was any reason to believe whether any drugs made it into the school, Amos said "I'm not going to comment on that right now."
Amos did say that Flaws has been a middle school teacher at the district for more than 30 years. He is currently a social studies teacher at Carlisle Middle School and coaches varsity girls' softball. He is also a former varsity girls' basketball coach.
The charges stem from an Oct. 16 traffic stop, though no further details on the circumstances were immediately available, Des Moines police said. Authorities arranged for Flaws to turn himself in on Thursday; he was booked into Polk County Jail and then released.
Flaws has won four state softball titles and nearly 1,000 games in 31 seasons. He has coached at Carlisle for 29 years. He was awarded the Golden Plaque of Distinction by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union last summer.
