Big game happening in northwestern Iowa tonight as #4-2A Hull Western Christian visits #1-3A Spirit Lake.

Hull Western Christian embarrassed Spirit Lake in their first meeting in Hull by a score of 78-41. That has been Spirit Lake's only loss to date, as they bring a 12-1 record into this match up. Western Christian brings a 12-2 record into this game, their only two losses have come to #2-3A Le Mars.

This game will have a big meaning to the Lakes Conference race, as Spirit Lake trails LeMars by half a game and Western Christian trails LeMars by one game.

LeMars blew a 17 point 2Q lead as Spencer clawed back with incredibly hot shooting, but the #2 ranked Bulldogs escaped Spencer's gym (which, historically, has caused MANY troubles for Le Mars) with a 46-39 victory. LeMars improves to 12-2 overall, 9-1 in the Lakes Conference. Spencer drops to 6-4 in the Lakes, their losses are to LeMars (twice), Spirit Lake, and @Western Christian.

Hull Western Christian leads Spirit Lake 42-39 after three quarters.

Assumption vs. West Review....

17-3 Assumption after 1... Strudevant hit a few threes to spark the Assumption offense off the bench. Doyle, Grenier, and Youngblut got to work in the post by getting to the rim and getting some put backs. West was very stagnant on offense and settled for several contested 3's and the one they did make was from the volleyball line.

37-18 at half. Doyle, Wadsager controlled the offense for Assumption in the second quarter. Ross became more aggressive for West and got to the rim a few times. Assumption was hitting on all cylinders from behind the arc. Sturdevant, Wadsager, and Doyle hit threes and ironically were the leading scorers with 11, 10, and 9 respectively.

West came out with a little more intensity to start the second half and held the lead to around 15 points most of the second half. They began attacking the rim harder, but Assumption was continually able to get offensive boards and fast break buckets that didn't allow West to ever get back into the game.

Late in the 4th with Assumption up 62-40 the starters were taken out with about 3-4 minutes left. Assumption reserves played very well in the remaining time. Nick Merschman hit his first and only 3pt attempt of the season and Tyler Phillips scored his first points of the season after getting a put back on his own miss.

Player of the game has to go to Strudevant who finished with 18 points and from my count didn't miss a single shot in the game which included 4 3ptr's, 2 18ft jumpers, and a 10ft floater I believe.

Youngblut and Doyle are just behind. Doyle played a very solid game against Ross and put in 21 points. Youngblut wasn't really needed on the offensive end, but got a few put backs, offensive boards, and was blocking or altering shots all night on the defensive end in what was possibly his best defensive performance of the season.

Max Taylor for West looks like a solid Freshman, but he will need some work with his jump shot to become more of a threat. The shot is to flat making it easier to alter or block his shot. It also leads to long rebounds that allow other teams to get on the break. The potential to be good is visibly there though. Like most freshman he needs to be come stronger with the basketball.

Malik Smith-Larsson came in for a few minutes and tweeked his knee. I believe he was kept out the remainder of the game as a precaution.

Keokuk 65, West Hancock (IL) 34. Good win for the Chiefs as they had control of this game the whole way. The Chiefs won by 20 the first time these two teams played, but it was tied midway through the third. Tonight, seniors Jonny Dahl and Dante Davis both had 18.

Ballard taking down Perry 72-63 should set up an interesting rematch in District 14. Gilbert as the 1 seed should be playing Boone while Perry and Ballard plays a rubber match.

We should get a good look at Perry's chances to make a deep run in the playoffs this Friday in their rematch with Carroll. Before the Xmas break Perry looked sharp and managed a 3 point win at Carroll. They also beat Ballard by 10 prior to the break but seem to have lost some of that early season momentum.

It'll be an interesting game. I'm taking Carroll to win this time around.
