A Look at the RPI and the Playoffs

PLAYOFFS?! PLAYOFFS?!
That is not state, that is playoffs. Woo Hoo you made playoffs. What is the big deal. That puts you in the top 3rd of your class. No honor in that. We have become too much of a society of participation trophies. No one should make a big deal for just making playoffs. There are 4 classes with more teams since fewer school combine in other sports. There are 6 classes in football.

Get off your high horse. The other sports play how many more regular season games than football does. All the teams make the post season. At that point it's win or go home. There's no one deciding should this team be state worthy or not. Each and every team plays its' way in.

Since the early '90s we've been at least 16 teams in the playoff format. In football it is a big deal because you only get 9 games guaranteed. Earning that tenth, win or lose, is so much of an honor to those teams. Being able to have another week of practice is huge. Not to mention the atmosphere they experience. Young kids gain so much from that on what it takes to get there.

It allowed for better non-district games. Those will die off under this new system.

At this age another week of practice is not huge. Most of these kids are in other sports too so they get plenty of practice. In college where you get a month or month and a half is huge. 1 week is no big deal.

State did a fine job. 36 of 48 higher ranked RPI teams won and 44 of 48 higher ranked bcmoore teams won in the first round. Overall there were very few teams that got left out that would have made much noise in the playoffs that didn't make it. Adjustments that could be made could be give points 5 for 4a win 4 for 3A win, 3 for 2A win 2 for 1A win 1 for A win and just reverse for a loss and you would still have win-percentage that would either be amped up if you played up or brought down if you played down and do the same point system for opponent's record. I thought the 4 non district games were good games that people wanted to see, but you shouldn't be hurt by playing up and lesser teams can schedule lesser teams to help try and build programs and confidence. Unless they change the number of teams in each class to more I think 16 is a good number. If they really wanted to balance things they could wait until after no district play to assign districts but that might be tough with homecomings, teams that share fields, lower level play and hiring officials.

I would have no problem playing 7 or 8 games and take everyone to the playoffs. We would not have too many games and it gives everyone a chance so there are no "bubble" teams. It will never fly but it would be an interesting twist. RPI is more for a seeding tool than anything else at that point.
