A article to read about IAHSAA football playoff system needs tweaking, again

Im with you on this one. Every other sport gets a chance at post season play. Why not do it with football. Cut back the non-district games and just play district games. Non district games are worthless. A lot of teams have their "suspended" players sit during those and then they are back for district action. Then at the end of the season you match up the teams for playoffs. You can still have enough games for student athletes to play in.

I understand what you are trying to say with your "worthless" comment, but many times rivals are not in the same class or not put into the same district by the state. Schools would not want to do away with these games and the atmosphere/$$ they bring in.

I wouldn't want rivalries to die simply for the sake of getting every team into the playoffs.

Yes I get what you mean with "rivalries" but even those have gone. I mean there used to be HUGE crowds are some of the marquee rivalry games and now it doesn't seem like that many people attend. Maybe in the "smaller" schools it still happens, but in large schools it doesn't seem like it. Maybe when Dowling & Valley go at it, but that's it.

If there are 8 teams in a district you get 7 games. Okay I would say let the teams play 1 non-district game at the beginning of the year to protect the "rivalries". Then play their district schedule and after week 8, seed all the teams. Play a true playoff format. The season might be bumped up a week to accommodate this before Thanksgiving. But give everyone a chance. Every other sport in IAHSAA does it, why not football. Other states are able to do it, why can't Iowa?
