3A State Bracket

Some great first round games in 3A.

Xavier vs Marion
Glenwood vs Norwalk
Mt. Pleasant vs Waverly-Shell Rock
Oskaloosa vs Sergeant Bluff-Luton

I will take Xavier, Norwalk, Mt. Pleasant, and Oskaloosa. I could see Glenwood and even SBL pulling off wins though.

Marion is certainly the Cinderella team in the 3A tourney this year. I guess it shows how strong the Wamac Conference was this year, without anybody really talking about it. I mean-- Mt. Vernon takes out a good Wahlert team, and then Marion takes out Assumption. But, Marion has their work cut out for them. Can't believe that South Tama almost knocked off Xavier.

Sergeant Bluff Luten is back for the second year, and took out a good Heelan team. Anyone think there is not parity in the state this year? Wow. Substate 1 and 4 were supposed to be dogfights and it really happened.

Glenwood vs. Norwalk has got to be a tight game, and probably the best first-round matchup. I wouldn't know which to pick.

I would think that Mt. Pleasant will run past Waverly, as the Go-Hawks struggled at times this year. Both have good guards, and good guards are essential to advancing.

Osky and SBL is another interesting game, with SBL definitely running under the radar. Another great game. I'll take Osky.

3A should be one of the best tournaments in years! Marion and SBL would seem to be the least strong, but these two teams came out of the toughest substates. Refreshing to see that the consensus top four or five teams made it to the Well.

Yeah, I think all four first round games will be good. Xavier and MP will probably move on but those are good 7 and 8 seeds. Other two games IMO are total coin flips.

Waverly - Too big and powerful for MTP. Mark that one down also. WSR +10
Xavier, easy win. Huge advantage to the Saints.

Mt Pleasant will run all over Waverly. MTP by 10Plus, mark it down.
I think all of the other games are toss ups. Slight advantages to Xavier, Osky and Norwalk.

I mean, Waverly could win just because they have a lot of coaching experience at state, but that part of the state was fairly weak this year, so I'll take Mt. Pleasant by about 8-10 points. I think a lot of us forget that the coach has, obviously, a lot to do with the odds of a team winning. That's a huge reason why I think Xavier may prevail, or MP, ultimately. However there are more than the usual number of good teams in 3A at state this year, so I'd not be surprised no matter who won. I think Marion and Xavier is an intriguing matchup because the schools are about a mile or two apart and "city games" are hard to predict.

I find the Glenwood - Norwalk matchup really interesting as they are very similar teams. They are the two highest scoring teams in 3A with Norwalk at 78ppg and Glenwood at 74. They both are guard dominant teams that love to shoot the three ball. They were number 1 and 3 in three pointers made in 3A with Norwalk again taking the 1 spot. This despite Glenwood shooting 37 more 3's on the year. It will just come down to which team is more on that day. Personally I think Norwalk will take it as I feel their backcourt is just a tad better than Glenwood's, plus they have better role players backing them up. If the two teams come out and and play like they have all year we might have a shootout on our hands though and anything could happen.

Agreed. The guards will cancel each other out and the game will go to Norwalk because they have better wings and post play
