Best time of the year for all the Basketball junkies across the state. I'm going to breakdown each district using current BC Moore rankings. As mentioned by another poster BC Moore tends to be erratic early in the year but as information is gathered during the year it becomes more reliable. Not perfect but nothing is when it comes to rankings.

Observations

Most competitive district is #1. Each round of games will be very interesting. District 4 and 8 will have very good District Final and Substate games. Xavier in District 3, Mount Pleasant in District 5, Osky in District 6 and Norwalk in District 6 were given very easy path to Wells Fargo. District 2 has no top team and lacks quality depth.

In a perfect world.

Boone boys would've shifted a top District 1 team (Spirit Lake) to District 2. Shift a top District 4 team (Assumption) to District 5. Shift a top District 8 team (Atlantic, Harlan or Carroll) to District 6 or 7. This would've leveled the playing field for all of the top teams instead of giving cakewalks to several teams. Poor job once again by people in Boone. Xavier, Osky, Norwalk and Mount Pleasant should be sending gifts and Thank you cards to Boone officials.

4 top 11 teams and 8 of the top 32 teams in one district? Some really good teams not making it to Des Moines - and Boone wonders why state tourney attendance numbers continue to decrease. At this rate the state tournament will be held in some middle school gym in the next 5 years with seating to spare. They continue to earn their reputation!

Agree that D1 is the best top-bottom... (we played 11 games against them this year)
but I don't think any of them are good enough to go deep at the state tourney this year.
Heelan & Spirit Lake have the potential to get hot and do some damage.

Great post Iowamavs. Any chance you'd be willing to do the other classes? It's interesting to see it laid out this way.

I agree with Vanderhoops. Not sure if District 1 will make a deep run at State. I do feel though that the Districts could have been split up a little be differently to allow more teams with a chance to compete in a Substate game for the chance to earn trip to Wells Fargo. With District one 2 of the top 11 teams are guaranteed not to make the Substate game.

From what I've heard they are sending Thank You's !...HAHAHA...bottom line is they want the best teams throughout the year at Wells Fargo

Agree District #1 has a good B.C. Moore score, with a lot of good teams, but I don't see any teams there winning state, unless it's Heelan. I think the state put the obvious (not so obvious to some) best four teams in easier districts/substates in order to get them to Des Moines- that being Xavier, Osky, Norwalk and Mt. Pleasant. District 4 is also very tough, but probably no one strong enough to win state either. I think the state did a better job than last year.

Multiple teams in District 1 are capable of winning a game at State. Whom ever comes out will be battle tested.

I think the State did an amazing job with the districts this year. This is about the best I have ever seen it.

I thought the state did a nice job this season with 3A. It is never an easy task and you will always have people that are upset. Oskaloosa, Mt. Pleasant, Norwalk, and Xavier have all earned the draw that they got by their play during the regular season. That being said nothing is ever guaranteed, that is why they play the games and anything can happen at tournament time. The Western side of the state has a number of very quality teams as well, but I believe geography makes it tough to make an effort to separate them much. I agree that Heelan could do a lot of damage at state if they make it, Hazekamp is a heck of a player and they have solid role guys. In my opinion, I think that Oskaloosa or Mt. Pleasant will get it done this year. One team has a wealth of experience and tough minded kids and the other has two D1 big men with great role players around them. It should be a lot of fun the next couple of weeks.
