2A Title Game Talk - Western Christian, Hull (23-2) vs. Pella Christian (22-4)

With a complete Western roster, I thought this would be a coin toss. Now PC has got to be favored.
Key for PC will be that Jungling will need to have another stellar game. I don't think they win without him scoring 20+.
Western has the advantage of spreading out the scoring a little more, experien in the title game, and the intangible motivation of a big hurdle.
But is enough to win short handed?

I have no idea what the outcome will be, but it should be a doozy. As a PC fan, I wish WC was full strength with their roster. The PC fans I've spoken to feel the same way.

I don't think Jungling needs to score 20+ to win, but it would definitely make the win more likely. PC has versatility. They can speed it up because of the athletes they have, but they also have the defensive capability to slow it down, which is likely what they'll try to do. They've had at least four (maybe five) different players lead in scoring throughout the year.

No one can score in bunches like Jungling, but few in HS ball can. He is just as likely to draw extra attention and open things up for others as he is to take over the game offensively.

Definitely the title matchup I was hoping for.

Really impressed with Pringle in both games. Was there a Pringle playing for Pella High too?

Kaz just seems like a rock. Steady double-double guy. (What nickname does he go by? I'm not typing his whole name out next year during football)
Good luck tonight!

Those Pringle boys are cousins. Alex (for PC) also has a little brother on the team and another brother as team manager.

Alex is the defensive spark plug for the team. His shooting percentage isn't great, but he always hits the big shots, like the steal and three that led to a win against #1 seed Dike-New Hartford last year.

Really looking forward to this one. I think we have the best two teams in 2A battling it out. Western's suspension's will be a factor as they now they have to be sure to avoid foul trouble with a very short bench. It is clear from last game that they are going to heavily rely on their starting 5. Even though they are shorthanded I think Western still has plenty of talent to give PC a game.

I don't think Western will be able to run like they did yesterday but they will still need to find ways to penetrate that PC D and get to the rim if they want to win. I too think PC will need a good game from Jungling. No offense to the rest of the PC kids as they are all good players, but no one scares me on offense like Jungling. I think he is probably the best guard in 2A.

Should be a great game. Of course the real winner here is Dordt who will get most of the players on the court for either basketball or football.

Western's missing starters were the star FB players (that also play hoops). Losing the 2 "tough" players pit's more pressure on the finesse guys. Kooima could go off on 3pt shooting & was a hard penetrator. Granstra was by far best defensive player & would guard the 6'10" post or lightening quick PG. would have drawn Jungling tonite.

IMO, 1 game would have been more than adequate penalty.

I've watched PC several times the last few years, and they seem like a team that just knows how to win. Nothing special. One really good player that can go off, but they don't seem overly talented to me. I feel there's more talent on the WC roster with/without the suspended players. Also, often it seems WC has the ability to take away an outstanding player like Jungling in order to disrupt the flow of their opponent's offense. There's a chip on the shoulders of the ones actually playing now (if you can imagine that as they win in everything). WC wins a good ball game.

WC rolls in this one...not even close. Just curious how many kids are from Pella on the team - do they still have the pipeline of kids coming from SE Polk? I know they get kids from the 'feed' lots, but I wasn't sure if they had any from other 'stables'. What ever happened to the big fella from PC who was like top 5 in the country from PC as a 6th grader or whatever? Did he even finish school at PC or did we 'move' up to DSM? Almost forgot about him until one of the media guys was asking about him after the game last night to a couple of fans from PC.

PC has had one player ever from the SE Polk area. Every current player resides in Pella and has been in the Christian school system there, like 99% of PC players in the history of the school.

Big question is if Harmsen and the coaching staff can get the boys back 'up' for this one. yes, i know its the state championship. They seemed to rally around the off court stuff yesterday and played well. Can they do that again?

TV timeouts will be very beneficial for Western after losing those players

Watching WC in the semi-final could bait me into picking them. Their size was astonishing for 2A. The announcer stated their starting 5 in the Semi-Final was 6'0, 6'3, 6'3, 6'6, and 6'6. Plus the 3 boys in street clothes (I'm guessing the suspended players) looked to have some height as well, two of them looked around 6'4 and another one around 6'0-6'1. Janesma (sorry if I spelled it wrong) looked to be in a league of his own out there. Could have scored 40 if he wanted to. Got to the basket whenever he wanted. Although WC has some players out and I believe Jungling is the best player in the 2A field, I don't see how WC can lose. It would take an atrocious shooting performance from WC for PC to pull this off.

That size wears on people throughout the game. I look for it to be close for 2.5-3 quarters and then the size of WC will begin to wear on PC.

WC by 7-10.

Wish I had your confidence Gator. Still think PC should be favored under the current circumstances.

For discipline, I'm fully behind:
1) if there's a written protocol, follow it no matter who the offender is.
2) coach/AD decides. & have the support of the parents

Still hate that this gives our program a black eye. Lots of haters out there, spawned from years of jealousy, & not much substance. Why give them real ammo?
Otherwise good kids who made a mistake, just one with big consequences.

Not fair these teams are good in both football and hoops. We need an intervention. Congrats to 2 great schools and their fans!

WC wins by 10+. They're still the more talented team, with the length and athleticism to contain Juengling.

Odd comment to make about PC. Western Christian isnt exactly pulling in all of their kids from Hull.

Both are private Christian schools. It is what it is.

Ha, let's just say I disagree with it and I will leave it at that.
So are you saying that comments like the one you disagree with create the substance which spawns the hate? That sounds about right to me. I am a very self aware Western fan and will readily admit that one of our biggest and worst characteristics is arrogance. We are not at all innocent in having so many other fan bases dislike us. I know I have been guilty of it as well.

That was probably about as well as Western could have played. Gesink and Jansma were absolutely fantastic tonight. They were able to break down that very good PC defense. With everything going on they just put this team on their backs and carried them to the title. The other guys who needed to step up all did. Harmsen hit some huge threes and hounded Jungling around the court. Vis played great D on Kac while pulling in 11 boards. Everyone played their role perfectly. Everyone also stayed out of foul trouble. 4 of the 5 starters played every minute of the game with the one only sitting for 3 minutes. That is really impressive, although I think the TV time outs helped a lot in keeping them fresh.

Pella Christian played a good game too. Jungling had a tough time getting going but the other guys were all stepping up and keeping it close. If Veenstra would have stayed out of foul trouble I think the result of the game may have been very different as Western was struggling with his size. PC just hung around all game and I was very worried they might make a run and take a lead when Jungling did start to get it going, which he did. He has a real knack for suckering in the offense before he attacks and gets the steal. Did that a couple times and just missed a couple others. PC had a couple other layups that just found a way to roll out. They make those and it is a different game.

But in the end it was clear Gesink and Jansma were not going to let that game get away from them. As the sealed it down the stretch breaking the PC press and making some big free throws. Western ties the state record with 9 titles in what was a very entertaining and hard fought championship game.

Seems like Western's district/substate games were more of a challenge than their games at the Well. Good job IAHSAA!

Great title game to watch (on my hacked cable feed).

Was hoping the IAHSAA guy would get booed at intro since game could not be seen in Pella or Hull.

Gesink & Jansma kids are fun to watch. Jungling showed flashes at the end, shots just weren't falling all night. PC duo playing the 5 spot kept them in it.
Western just knows how to win.

Nice effort & great win!

The concensus of the arm chair QB's having an adult beverage at the hotel was that the semi-final games made a difference.
PC had to grind out a tough game against a good opponent. Maybe it left them a little leg weary?

Western had an easy time & upped their confidence. Came in feeling like everything would work & less worries about foul trouble in the post

Great win against a great opponent

Lol, no reason to fight about which private school bends the rules the most. Neither team should be in 2A, as any reasonable person could see by looking at demographics of private schools.

I was pretty shocked in 2A (for the whole bracket) that it wasn't closer. This was kind of billed as the class that would have the most parity.

It was a good game between two very good teams. WC earned the win and a lot of respect in the process.

I believe the decision to use Kacmarynski to defend Jansma was a mistake. Kac is a phenomenal player, but his skill set does not match up well against Jansma. PC would have been better off, in my opinion of course, using a combination of Howerzyl and Vander Molen to hound Jansma all game and put Kac on the 6'6" sophomore Vis.

In multiple tight games this year, PC used defensive pressure to either create easy shots or generate energy that positively impacted the offense. We didn't see that last night, and unfortunately PC could have used it.

Congratulations to the Wolfpack on another state title.

Vander - You're from Western, no adult beverages allowed. Wait, you were outside of Sioux County so you should be ok! I am 100% kidding. I hope you had a few in celebration after the game last night
