Who will be the favorites next year? Will Clear Lake, Sioux Center, Spirit Lake be contenders? Will Kuemper find enough talent to make a challenge again like 2013?

Here's a very early look at my preseason top five for the 2015 season:

1. Albia
2. Beckman, Dyersville
3. Williamsburg
4. NFV
5. Union

If I had to do a way to early top 10 it would look something like this

1. Albia- Return a ton off of very good team this year, with an excellent coaching staff
2. Beckman- Very young team that has found its way to the Dome this year, expect big things next year
3. Union- Lose a few important seniors, but best two skilled players are sophomores
4. South Tama- Junior dominated team this year, lose QB and best lineman but everyone else returns
5. CMB- Good young team that could make a big run next year if they can fill in a couple of gaps
6. East Sac- Return quite a few pieces off of good team
7. Mediapolis- Young team that did well in weak district, should take district next years
8. Spirit Lake- Lose quite a bit off of this years team, but they should reload
9. Williamsburg- Raiders are always tough, again they reload, not rebuild
10. Clear Lake- Tradition, Tradition, Tradition, I suspect that the Lions will be back

Others to consider: Sioux Center, North Fayette Valley, Mount Vernon, Clarinda, Kuemper, Waukon, Central Lee

I would be surprised if Kuemper is a true contender next year. They return some talent, but not as much as some other teams in their own district (East Sac, Southeast Valley). Clarinda will also be solid again despite losing some good seniors. District 8 should be a battle next year with these four all contending for the district title plus Shenandoah & Red Oak will be improved.

Clear Lake will have an undefeated regular season, then lose first or second round like they always do.

Umm...Clear Lake has a pretty decent record in the postseason. Wouldn't pile on them. I think Beckman has to be favored in D-3 next year followed by Waukon, NFV, and New Hampton and yes in that order.

CL/GLR will be a slight favorite in District 1. They lose plenty of talented seniors (10-13 leading tacklers). I guess we'll find out next year if this group of juniors lives up to their hype. Sioux Center loses a very good senior group and may have a year of rebuilding. . Spirit Lake losses a very good senior group, but guys like Meschede, Brown, Poock, Backhaus, Tvedt, Jenness and Jones will give CL/GLR everything and maybe more than they can handle. My predictions.

Spirit Lake 6-0
CL/GLR 5-1
Sioux Center 3-3
MOC/FV 3-3
Sheldon 3-3
Okoboji 1-5
Cherokee 0-6

Clear Lake will have to find a lot of new faces to go undefeated next year. Only two starters return on defense & just three are back ( all lineman) on offense.

Mediapolis loses top 2 RB's (Holloway and Erickson, pretty much all rushing yards) and #1 (TE) and #4 (WR) receivers. The 3 of those 4 were #1, #2 and #7 tacklers (all LB's). The TE/LB did miss the final 3 or 4 regular season games this year due to a knee injury but returned for playoffs. Holloway and Erickson will definitely be missed. Team leaders any way you look at it. Otherwise sitting decent especially returning OL and DL.

Williamsburg loses QB, top RB, and top 2 WR. 5 of top 8 and 10 of top 16 tacklers. Don't know who the linemen were so can't speak to that.

West Burlington loses 4 of top 5 and 7 of top 12 tacklers, QB, top 2 rushers, but return top 2 WR. OL/DL ?

Mid-Prairie returns QB, loses top rusher,loses 2 of top 3 WR. Lose #4, #9, and #10 tacklers. OL/DL?

West Liberty, Louisa-Muscatine and Central Lee all lose some and return some key guys. Any of them could step up and contend for 4th playoff spot with West Burlington. Mid-Prairie, Williamsburg and Mediapolis will fight it out for 1-3.

Cascade is losing a ton (8+ seniors on both sides of the ball and the vast majority of the skill positions.)

However with that being said the JV was 8-2 and undefeated in district games winning most by 2-3 TD's ++. The only 2 loses were a close one with Regina and Marion. The current FR/SO classes are pretty talented but unproven.

Grid, check your facts, Clear Lake made the semis in 3A last year losing to Bishop Heelan.
