After West Marshall lost to Dike New Hartford Last week district 3 is a jumbled mess. Roland Story is 2 and 0 in District. I'm not sure how good they are. We will find out this week when they play at Aplington Parkersburg. West Marshall at East Marshall could be interesting too.

District 3 Standings
Roland Story 3-2 2-0 in District Play
A-P 5-1, 2-1 in District Play
D-N-H 3-3, 2-1 in District Play
East Marshall 3-2, 1-1 in District Play
West Marshall 3-2, 1-1 in District Play
Saydel 4-2, 1-2 in District Play
South Hardin 1-5, 0-3 in District Play

At the beginning of the season I thought A-P and Dike were the best two teams. Then I watched West Marshall win at A-P. After Dike beat West Marshall Friday this District is completely up for Grabs.

It will be interesting to see who comes out of this district come playoff time. Last year, this district was a pretty big mess outside of the top two; this year the whole thing looks to finish that way.

To me, Roland-Story really is the 'X-factor' of this district. I'm with you; I don't know how good Roland-Story is. Until we know, it's nearly impossible to make any predictions on this district (not that anyone was asking, but...). That being said, I'm eager to see how it shapes up. I wouldn't be surprised to see A-P, D-NH, or Roland-Story win the district title 'outright.' I could also see it finishing in a three-way tie for first.

What happens if there's a three-way tie for second place in the new playoff system?

Head-to-head and points to determine the order (2nd/3rd/4th).

Happened last year in 4A-3. Lewis Central, Urbandale, and CBTJ tied for 2nd. LC got the spot on points. Also in 8P-6, Lenox got the #2 spot on points over Stanton and East Union.

Iron Doc humbly says A-P by 10.
I'm really 50/50 on the game.

4A and 8-man both had 8 districts though, so they don't have the two wildcard teams in the playoffs, correct? Assuming there are no ties for first place in any of the other districts, would all three teams tying for second place be in?

There's no provision for an automatic spot for teams that tied for second and lost the tiebreaker. That only applies to teams who tie for first.

A-4:
East Buchanan, Wapsie Valley and Lisbon tied for 1st at 6-1. Lisbon got the "automatic at-large" bid.

In your scenario, the 2nd-place team, as determined by the criteria, gets the automatic spot. The 3rd and 4th-place teams go to the at-large pool, where they may or may not get into the postseason.

3A-1: Sgt. Bluff-Luton and SC Heelan tied for 2nd. SB-L got the automatic bid on head-to-head. Heelan was slotted 3rd, put in the at-large pool, and did not qualify.
A-1: Akron-Westfield and Woodbury Central tied for 2nd. A-W advanced on head-to-head. Woodbury Central slotted 3rd, at-large pool, did not qualify.

Gotcha, thank you for the clarification.

With having a 7 team district it is actually possible for there to be a 5 way tie for champion, it almost happened in a 3A district a few years back. To me Roland Story is the mystery with not playing one of the other 3 top teams in the district, we kind of know what Dike, AP, and West Marshall, being teams that are inconsistent but can be very good when they are on.

If AP wins Friday they'll be in almost for sure with the point differential.

I know a lot of people didn't like the "watered down" playoffs, but I think that is where it helped with situations like what is being discussed here. Teams who are right at the same skill, performance, and result level could potentially go different directions. Additionally, imagine if that happens in a weaker district and an extra team gets in with the point differential - a stronger district then suffers by having somebody left out. I would rather give up an early season non-district game and play the extra playoff round to help ensure no team with a legit shot is left out; this would also help ensure that too many playoff games are not crammed into such a short period of time.

I think they could have left the 4 team layout and week 9 be a mix between playoffs and final regular season game for those that didn't make it. All week 9 games match with a sister district based off record where 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3 (first round playoffs) and 5 plays 8 and 6 plays 7 (non playoff games.) Home field for all games pending where you finish in the district. More teams make the playoffs but is still preserves the extra time between playoff games that the state wanted. The 2nd round could then be match ups not by sister district and take into account some sort of seeding and distance between teams.

This would be cool. Travel may be an issue, unfortunately; especially for the teams who don't have a chance to advance. It'd be really interesting to see how districts matched up with each other, though.
