The records were through 4/3, So the impact of the West loss to Prairie and Greene County's second loss aren't reflected here. I expect Greene County will take a little hit in the rankings even though the two losses were against 2A and 3A competition. Still think they're a good team. Likewise with West Liberty, they're storming back. I still think West Central Valley is the sleeper here, look for them to move up in the coming weeks.

I hadn't noticed that Assumption and South Tama moved up a class this year. What about Humboldt, did they move up too? So, I don't think those schools necessarily grew much, did they move up by virtue of more schools participating? Are we getting near the point of needing 4 classes?

What surprised you in the rankings? Any of them you question or take issue with? I'm staying on the bandwagon with Clayton Ridge too. If they pick up a win tonight, look for them to at least get votes in the next ranking.

Looks like Waukee at CR Wash is the premier matchup tonight.

We’ve played Solon, Mid-Prairie, Notre Dame and Wapello as well as Clinton. Not sure how Wapello is receiving votes, not good. Notre Dame is very good. Solon is good, but it was the third game of the day for both teams. Mid-Prairie is decent but not close to Solon or Notre Dame.

You get some of this in early ranking - you get it later too. They have pretty rigid ranking criterea and their hands are tied to using data, so early success can push you up rankings pretty quickly, and it can crash pretty quickly, when losses to quality teams happen you can fall from grace quickly (look at Assumption and Hillcrest in 2019 history)

The third game of the day can be really telling - shows you who's fit, physically and mentally, which is an important thing when we get to tournament time. For many teams it's also different now than it will be then.

My 1A prediction for this week:

1- ND - 4-0 stays number 1
2 - Solon - 4-1 Only loss to a quality 2A (Marion) I think they stay at the 2 spot
3 - WL - 3-1 Putting up lots of goals, only loss to a quality 3A (Muscatine) could make a strong argument for the number 2 spot
4 - W'Loo Columbus 2-0
5 - Treynor 2-0
6 - Albia 2-0
7 - Regina - Hard to tell what the committee will do with a perennial power without a record yet - don't think they'll drop out, but they should drop down and have to earn their way up
8 - West Central Valley - 2 Quality wins, one close loss
9 - Beckman 2-0 Maybe higher? Includes a big 2A win vs CCA
10 - Mid Prairie 2-0
11 - Greene County - 2-2 Losses were to higher classed quality teams, I think they'll be fine and be in the mix at least to a substate final, but I don't think the committee can just ignore the losses at this point.
12 - Postville - 4-0 - Maybe they should jump higher
13 - N Fayette Valley 2-0 - 2 High Quality wins
14 - AHSTW 1-1 - One high quality loss to W Central Valley
15t -Western Christian 2-0
15t - St Alberts 2-0
15t - Centerville

Also getting votes will be: Mepo (sorry Mepodawgs, 2-3 has to drop them out, at least for now having 5 matches under their belt should help them going forward, Creston - Only loss to St Alberts, Clayton Ridge, new kids on the block stepping up and getting it done with a co-ed squad, PC with a 1-3 start, will they even get votes this week?

No problem. I wouldn’t rank us either, but I haven’t seen many teams. Although our next 4 games are very winnable. Just looking for the program to continue to improve every year.

Wow, the coaches really liked Beckman's wins, that's a big jump

I'm going to keep banging the Clayton Ridge gong. A good win, by new-comer Cascade, has me thinking they could be getting some votes soon. Mepo's win over Columbus Comm should end Columbus' vote getting.

1A notes:

Good to see Cascade knocking on getting into the rankings in their maiden year. - Looks like the committee rally liked the statement Regina made against Solon Saturday.

Not sure, mathematically, how Beckman got to first place without any first place votes while ND still had 5? Postville gets a FP vote. 6-0 at the time of rankings, 7-0 now, only given up 3 goals in 7 matches and this is usually a tough time of the season for them to sustain wins.

Is it time to make the "Way too early substate predictions thread?”

Week 6 rankings are out.

1A Sub-state District 7 will feature 2 of the top 4 ranked teams in Regina and Solon. And, 3 out of the top 10 ranked teams if you include Mid-Prairie.
Of the 7 teams in 1A District 7, 5 of them are ranked or receiving votes. That must clearly be the hardest 1A Sub-state District.

I know it's been a traditional regular season schedule for Regina but I can't recall their SOS ever being tougher. That combined with the fact they have so many underclassmen playing is pretty remarkable. And that is on top of the injuries they have had (they are still without a starting freshman that has yet to play this year I believe).

I think this year's schedule was almost identical to 2019 and the results about the same except the loss to Dav Central. (so far, Muscatine is going to be a MUCH tougher match that in recent history. And a win there has never been more important.) This always hurts Regina in state seeding, but at that point, hey, you just have to win - everyone has the same challenge. The only imbalance out there is I think Western Christian will get a higher seed than they deserve. Regina will end up with a first round matchup against either Columbus, Greene County or maybe West Liberty, I haven't projected the points for my projected state participants (yet.)

Mepo 10-3 with wins over Centerville and Danville in the last week, but no longer ranked. Oh well, conference tournament this weekend with a finals matchup with Notre Dame possible then a tough matchup with Ft. Madison on Monday. Then repeat conference tournament for Substate.

It's tough with a few teams on that same bubble (NFV, Denver etc.) tough call who goes up and who goes down. Historically, they have not dropped someone down unless a challenger has a higher quality win. At this point, their best bet is to use the remaining games as pep for substate rather than focus on winning, and see what they can make happen there.

Substate pairings should be out today, right?
I guess today or tomorrow per your earlier comment on them being released "this week." I guess they do it without the last few games. I don't know that the remaining games would have much affect on the seedings.

I look forward to seeing some matches week after next.

It is mostly the same schedule as 2019. But, I think many of the teams on the schedule are better than they have been in the past. And, Regina had a few of their 1A opponents back out of games this year (Monticello, Hillcrest, WL).

My point exactly Pine... similar schedule but all the teams are in good years. Tougher Nevada tournament, tougher catholic school tournament, davenport schools all with better teams. I've been close to the regina team for about 10 years. Far from their best team. Reminds me of the 15 or 16 team when they were young. Basically the Tovar kid carried them but too much youth crippled them in the end. Hope the same thing doesn't happen with Wick and crew this year. Those are two of the best 1a soccer players I've ever seen. Coaches agree.

I can't recall a team being even close to this young. Like I said that 16 team (I think) basically had one dominant senior (Tovar), one decent senior that was hurt often (Yowell), and then a few juniors. But Rick historically has not relied and has been reluctant to start underclassmen especially freshman. Think back to that class of 14 and it was basically all seniors and a couple juniors. Go back even further and you'll have a hard time finding more than one or two freshman playing and none starting.

Rick started trying the upperclassmen this year and quickly switched to the youth movement. One senior quit and the others are basically playing jv. Nice kids but the younger guys are clearly better even though not necessarily better athletes. Scary to think about this team in two years. Just hope they make it past solon for wicks sake. Love that kid.

I think the only problem with getting by Solon, may be over-confidence. They beat Solon by 7-1 and went pretty deep into subs, even in the first half. The only two possible concerns are what Solon learned from the experience and the potential for Regina to be over-confident. I'm not sure either of those are significant enough to make this truly dangerous. Of course, it is "win or go home" time, so anything can happen.
