The girls State Soccer Tournament kick off today in just about a half hour.

Noon – Field 8: Waterloo Columbus Catholic 1, Center Point-Urbana 0 (3-1 PK’s)

12:15 p.m. – Field 7: Iowa City Regina 2. Council Bluffs St. Albert 1

12:30 p.m. – Field 6: Davenport Assumption 7, Tri-Center 0

12:45 p.m. – Field 9: Nevada 5, Gilbert 0

Some lopsided victories from the lower bracket.
Regina and Waterloo Columbus will meet in a rematch that the Regals won 4-0 at home earlier in the season.
Top ranked Assumption will face last year's State Runner Up, Nevada.

Lewis Central ends Winterset/Earlham's first ever trip to the State soccer tournament.
Last year's 1A Champ Bishop Heelan advances to the 2A Semifinals.

5:15 p.m. – Field 7: Waukee 3, Dubuque Hempstead 2 (2 OT)

Last year's defending 3A Champion Iowa City West will take on undefeated CR Kennedy today in what should be a great game.

A couple of issues with the girls state tournament. Yesterday during the semifinal the two ball boys were a combined 15 and had some issues in keeping the game moving.

The worst complaint and what should be addressed and fixed. During the Columbus-Regina game a Columbus player was injured and laid on the field for approximately 30 minutes waiting for first the call for medical help, the fire truck to show up and finally an ambulance. I hope the young lady is okay. The organizers of this tournament should be embarrassed about how this occurred. With a $5 parking and $10 admission there should be an ambulance on site. With heat indexes alone they should be there. The teams and fans deserve better than they got yesterday.
