The 2015 boys soccer season is underway with practice beginning on March 16th.

Who should be considered the favorites or the teams to keep an eye on this season?

9. Danville
10. Gladbrook-Reinbeck
11. Albia
12t. Postville
12t. St. Albert

Receiving votes: Center Point-Urbana, Underwood, and Columbus Catholic

In Class 1A, Iowa City Regina will start off their season next Monday evening with a rematch of last years 1A Championship game against Mid-Prairie. It will be an early season game between the #1 vs. #6 ranked teams.

Mid-Prairie has graduated some of their key scorers from last season in Austin Errthum and Wyatt Cady, but return a number of other key players.

IC Regina returns their top scorers from last season, but loses a few key seniors primarily from their defense positions. The big question is how Regina will replace goalkeeper Aiden Mullen who helped the Regals give up just one goal at the State Tournament last season and who came up huge in the penalty kick shootout in the Championship game.

I think West Liberty is a team to keep a close eye on this season. They are a program that has been getting better and better each year. Last year they were eliminated by IC Regina in a 4-3 substate game or they may have challenged for the Championship. This year they return both youth and experience and will play a schedule that has them well tested and prepared for the post-season. They will also need to replace a very good senior goalkeeper in Brett Becker however. Their game against Regina on April 21st should be a great one.

West Liberty has started 0-2 this year with losses to Muscatine and Assumption. They play Mid Prarie next - tough schedule to start the year. Over the last couple of years, they always seem to start the year slow and gain momentum as the season progresses. Believe they will be battle tested and ready to contend come tournament time.

Not much movement in 1A or 2A, but some teams moving in 3A early on. If any 1A coaches are interested in joining the rankings committee, there are open spots.

Week 1 rankings

Iowa City West had a 33 game winning streak snapped last season by City High before going to to win the Class 3A Championship. But, they have already dropped two games early this season, losing yesterday to CR Washington in penalty kicks on a rainy and windy night.

CR Wash vs. IC West

Decorah defeats top ranked 1A Regina in overtime tonight, 3-2. Decorah was awarded a controversial penalty kick with one minute remaining in regulation, which they converted to tie the game. They then struck quickly two minutes into overtime on a quick counter attack goal from a long clearance. It was a physical and well played game by both teams.

In a top 10 match up, IC Regina went on the road last night to take on West Liberty. Regina struck first 20 minutes into the game when Andrew Yowell slipped a shot past the onrushing keeper to put the Regals up 1-0. Minutes later Jacob Adam received a pass in the penalty area, chested it down and laid it off beautifully to his brother Michael who put it into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Regals.

The second half saw West Liberty turn up the pressure. West Liberty and Alliance Club player Raudel Fierro was dangerous every time he touched the ball, but a vicious strike off of the crossbar was as close as he could come as the Regals did their best to contain him. Regina's depth appeared to play a factor as they controlled the final 20 minutes with several more great scoring opportunities and numerous corner kicks.

It was a well played game in cold and windy conditions and I would expect these two teams might see one another again in the postseason.

The coach for Sioux City West must be a terrible person.

Sioux City, West 30, Alta-Aurelia 0

That is some seriously poor sportsmanship.

Yep, Regina is forced to forfeit two wins for allowing an academically ineligible player to play. I'd noticed he sat out the last few games, but didn't realize his grade trouble existed prior to that.

"The top-ranked Regina boys' soccer team went from having one loss to three losses without playing a match.

Regina announced in a statement Thursday it will be forced to forfeit its first two wins of the season due to the use of an academically ineligible player.

Class 1A No. 1 Regina is now 2-3 on the season following the two forfeits and an 8-0 win over Davenport West on Thursday.

The two wins, an 8-0 victory over Mid-Prairie and a 3-0 win over Mount Pleasant, will now be listed as 1-0 wins for the opposing teams.

"The Regina boys' soccer roster was not checked properly for academic ineligibility at the end of first semester, which resulted in this error," Regina activities director Tim Foley said. "It was my duty to not only check the roster, but to have previously notified the student, parents and coaches of the player's ineligibility. The player and coaches were not at fault in any way. We were in no way trying to circumvent the rules of the IHSAA. It was an error of procedure by myself that resulted in the outcome."

So does this fall on the coach, the kid, the administration (maybe all)? Stuff happens. I don't see it impacting their ability to finish the season in the championship.

The Catholic School tournament is this weekend up at the TUMA complex north of Cedar Rapids. Some very good teams will match up, it will be interesting to see where they stand at this point.

Teams included:
Cedar Rapids Xavier, Assumption Davenport, Columbus Catholic, Beckman, Bellevue Marquette, Council Bluffs St. Albert, Holy Trinity, Iowa City Regina

Sounds like it was the AD's fault for not catching the problem with the grades in time. He hasn't dressed out for the last couple of games, but I didn't realize (and apparently nobody did until it was too late) that he needed to sit even earlier than he did.
The kid is a good player, but Regina has the depth to compete well without him. Don't know if it's true, but I heard he has to sit 30 days and get his grades up, then he may be eligible again. But, again, I'm not sure.

How many of these teams will be in the State tournament?

Nearly all of them have a pretty good chance. Should be some great games. Weather.com lists a 100% chance of rain on Saturday with wind and a high of 51 degrees, so it could be a long, wet and chilly day for the teams.

sounds like Regina keeps making the news for the not so good, didn't they have a situation with cross country that made them ineligible for state meet?

They practiced on the District course due to the invitation of Solon, which neither the coach or AD realized at the time was not allowed. First time AD, and he is a really great guy, but a couple of big mistakes early on.
Other than a couple of forfeited wins though, in this case it shouldn't matter much in the big picture.

The AD actually knew as soon as he heard about the practice and contacted the state immediately. One of the disadvantages of a private school where he is AD and vice principal.

one would think for the recent forfeit that the AD being VP would have immediate access to grades.

It was announced yesterday that the two positions will now be separated moving forward. Good move, imo.

To be academically ineligible, and forced to sit by state, means you flunked a class. (unless I am mistaken) Are you saying, that no one noticed that an athlete that had flunked didn't sit out the required time? And that it was up to the AD/VP to ensure that the athlete and coach KNEW he had flunked a class and not sat? Pretty sure, that most high school athletes know, when then flunk, they become ineligible.

Iowa City Regina with an impressive 4-1 win over a very good 3A Bettendorf team last night. Regina will finish out their regular season really testing themselves with 3 road games against some very tough competition. Pleasant Valley, Waterloo Columbus and Muscatine.

Tonight is the annual Iowa City West vs. City High rivalry match up. Last year City High snapped West's 33 game winning streak with a goal in the last second of the game.
This season, West struggled to a slow start, but has come on strong lately winning 6 of their last 7 matches. City is going in the other direction, bolting out to an 11-0 record before dropping 3 of their last 4 games.
City and West were placed in the same sub-state district, so we may be in for a rematch down the road, but tonight's game should give the winner a lot of confidence moving forward.

Another great game between City and West tonight. West struck in the first 10 minutes, capitalizing on one of their first real surges deep into City territory. A low hard cross was directed to the near post past the keeper.

The game was fast paced and quite physical, in the second half City appeared to tie the game, but a goal was waved off for apparent contact with the keeper (it was hard to tell why the goal was disallowed).
But, minutes later, City tied the game on a long, well placed shot that sailed in over the keepers outstretched hands.

After a frantic finsh, the game went to overtime. 4 minutes into overtime, City came down the left wing, hesitated, the burst past the defender and fired the ball from a tough, tight angle barely inside the far post for a 2-1 City High win. Great game on a cold and windy night.

I would have to say the Danville Bears have a chance to turn some heads this year.

Danville has put together a very good record this season, sitting at 13-1 currently. The question will be whether the level of competition was there to truly test the Bears. But, Danville has beaten the opponents put before them and look to be a talented team. Danville doesn't appear to have any legitimate challengers in their Sub-state bracket, so there is a very good chance they will advance to the State Tournament.

Close, the top ranked or two top ranked are placed, then the rest are alphabetical (within each substate bracket).

"The IHSAA assigns all the teams to their respective substate assignments and also the IHSAA places the teams on the bracket according the protocol explained below.

A combination of IHSSCA rankings and an alphabet draw found in the September edition of the IHSAA Bulletin show how teams are placed on the 8 team bracket. We use an 8 team bracket to place teams on the substate brackets. Obviously, with only 6 teams in Class 2A and Class 3A, byes occur. The highest ranked team in that particular bracket will always receive a first round bye and not play on the opening night. The same could be said when there are two ranked teams in the same substate. The two highest ranked teams have been separated and will not meet up with each other until the substate final.

Template #1- 6 Teams in a substate with one ranked team. The highest ranked team will receive a bye and the rest of the teams will be placed on the bracket based on the alphabet procedure. A second team will receive a bye as well. Records have no impact on where these teams are placed or who receives the second bye.

Template #2- 6 Teams in a substate with two ranked teams. The highest ranked team and the second highest ranked team will each receive a bye and the rest of the teams will be placed on the bracket based on the alphabet procedure. Again, records have no impact on where these teams are placed."
