Class A Season Outlook

Over the coming days I plan on posting my thoughts on the upcoming season for each of the classes. Class A is probably my favorite most years so I thought that I would start with it. This is just to get a little discussion going, and hear other people’s thoughts.

District 1

Favorite: MMCRU
Top Challenger: Gehlen

I think that MMCRU returns the most from a very solid team, but they do lose a pretty good QB. I think Gehlen is always solid and returns quite a bit from a team that seemed to improve as the season went on. After that I see A-A, A-W and S-O competing for the last 2 playoff spots, A-W lost quite a bit from last year’s district title team.

District 2

Favorite: Saint Ansgar
Top Challenger: West Hancock

I went back and forth for who to make the favorite, I see both of these teams as top 5 teams in the state, Saint maybe returns a little more, but I also think that West Hancock rebuilds year after year. After those two it is Lake Mills, the one question, I have about them is numbers as they didn’t seem to have very many out, and the Bacon kid will be a big loss. For the four spot I would probably go with Newman but it’s a toss-up.

District 3

Favorite: Wapsie Valley
Top Challenger: Nashua Plainfield

This is Wapsie’s district, I think they are a top 5 team in the state and shouldn’t be challenged in the district. After that I put NP as the top challenger, but I think there are 4 teams competing for 3 playoff spots. NP, NB, and SW all lost some important seniors, I think NP probably returns the most experience, although NB, SW, and NT all return their QBs. NT I believe lost by a touchdown or less in 4 games last year, but depth could be a big concern.

District 4

Favorite: Starmont
Top Challenger: Maquoketa Valley

This is a district where I think there are 5 teams competing for 4 playoff spots. I took Starmont as the favorite as I think they return the most, although the King kid that they lost was a great athlete. Maquoketa Valley lost the McShane kid which is a huge loss, but they started a bunch of sophomores last year, that is why I put them at two. East Buc is well coached, but Thurn, Bowers, and Fox powered that team last year. North Linn has been solid the last few years, but I think they take a step back, and Bellevue is always solid.

District 5

Favorite: Lisbon
Top Challenger: Pekin

I think Lisbon is the clear favorite in this district, and should roll to a district title, overall I think the district will be weak again. I put Pekin at 2 I think that they have the most questions answered going into the season for me. I see Columbus taking a step back with Amigon graduating but I still think that they are a playoff team. I would take Danville as a playoff team again, and am interested to see what they do in year to in their return to football.

District 6

Favorite: Madrid
Top Challenger: Mount Ayr

Mount Ayr is kind of the pick of a lot of people I have seen, and I will go with them as well, but I do think that this district is closer then many think. Mount Ayr returns just about everyone off of a very young team and as a program has made the dome in the past so they do have some pedigree and they could very easily jump up and win the district. I still think Lynnville Sully will be decent and a playoff team. For the last spot I see Central Decatur or North Mahaska. North Mahaska has been down for a while but seem to be returning some nice pieces as well.

District 7

Favorite: AC/GC
Top Challenger: Earlham

I think AC/GC is turning themselves into one of the most consistent programs in small school football in Iowa, the question is if they will take another step to the dome this year. Maybe a few questions on defense but I think a clear favorite. I took Earlham second as they are consistent and return quite a bit, but I could see them fall to 3 or 4 as well. After that I think that IKM and Riverside show the most returning so I would take them for the final two spots.

District 8

Favorite: Woodbury Central
Top Challenger: Logan Magnolia

I think that this is Woodbury Central’s district until someone really challenges them. They do lose a great quarterback but I think return enough for a runner up team to be the favorite. I took LoMa second because I think they return enough and are typically solid throughout the years. After that I don’t know who the final two spots will be. Are KP-RV going together after this year? If not, I could see that being a problem. Westwood, Tri Center and even Saint Albert could contend for playoff spots.

My Top 10

1. Saint Ansgar
2. AC/GC
3. Wapsie Valley
4. West Hancock
5. Woodbury Central
6. Madrid
7. MMCRU
8. Lisbon
9. Starmont
10. Mount Ayr

There is always a gap between the haves and have nots in Class A, but I think there is going to be more parity amongst the top teams this year.

Playoffs are a joke right now...

Seriously? Boise State? Miami?

They need to get shot out of this mix like a cannon and replaced with OSU and spuat. OM & UGA next in line. PSU & Indiana would melt like cheap candles under the SEC schedule all these have played. Kirby dumb is actually right about one thing... you don't see the real picture or gravity of these games sitting in a room 1000 miles away watching it on TV.

And while I'm at it, Fvck Clemson!

Class 1A Season Outlook

Here are my thoughts for 1A. Like I said for Class A this is just to get a little discussion going during the long boring summer months.

District 1

Favorite: OABCIG
Top Challenger: Hinton

Overall the top teams in this district last year were very young so I think you will see the same teams be successful. I put OABCIG as the favorite because they return a bunch and seemed to take the district pretty easily last year. After that I could see Hinton, West Sioux or Ridge View being a top challenger. I am interested to see Ridge View under the leadership of Brian Wilken, how does he adapt back to the 11 man game, because I feel he is a very good coach.

District 2

Favorite: Emmetsburg
Top Challenger: Manson NW Webster

Emmetsburg was the best team in this district last year and honestly by a wide margin. They were overall a young team so I expect them to win the district again. Manson NW Webster kind of fell into the 2 spot last year, and return quite a bit as well so I would think they should be improved as well. For the final two spots I think Pokey, East Sac and Sioux Central are all in contention.

District 3

Favorite: Dike New Hartford
Top Challenger: Sumner Fredericksburg

This district was a blood bath last year. I took DNH because to me they were very close to being a dome team but just couldn’t quite get over a couple of humps and with the experience they return I think they take this district. Of the teams remaining I like SF, I think the fact that some younger kids got experience with some injuries last year will be beneficial but they do lose some studs. I still think MFL will be good, I just don’t know what they have coming up to replace what they lost.

District 4

Favorite: Grundy Center
Top Challenger: South Hardin

Grundy is the back to back state champion and while they do lose some impressive talent, I also think that they will just reload and take this district again. After them I think there are a lot of questions, I took South Hardin because they seemed to grow as the season went on, but I am not sure what they have up front. Columbus lost a ton to graduation, Hudson is always solid, and Alburnett was young last year and couldn’t seem to get out of their own way. I think any of those 4 could honestly finish second.

District 5

Favorite: Wilton
Top Challenger: Regina

District 5 is a district of 3 haves and 3 have nots. I think with what Wilton brings back they should be the favorite, they aren’t run away favorites but none the less favorites. I put Regina in the 2 spot just because I think they have a few more questions answered. I think West Branch will be good as always, but I am interested to see what they look like this fall. As for the forth spot I think it comes down to Beckman and Cascade again.

District 6

Favorite: Pella Christian
Top Challenger: Sigourney Keota

District 6 is another district with a clear top half and bottom half. I guess for me I trust Pella Christian and SK more then Pleasantville, although I do think the Trojans return some nice pieces that might take them to a district crown, but right now I would take PC with what they bring back and SK is always tough. As for the 4th spot I would lean EBF but I don’t see any of those teams being very good.

District 7

Favorite: South Hamilton
Top Challenger: Woodward Granger

I think South Hamilton has built their program into one that will be contending for a district title every year. They aren’t flashy and might not be a state title contender but will always play solid football. I think Woodward Granger checks the most boxes after them, bringing back many contributors from a decent team last year. After those two I think it is probably Ogden and West Central Valley for the other two spots.

District 8

Favorite: AHSTW
Top Challenger: Underwood

I went back and forth between AHSTW and Underwood, and honestly Treynor as well. I just think that all three programs are very good, but AHSTW brings back the most experience. Underwood has just been reloading lately so they very well may do it again and win the district, and like I said Treynor should be solid as well. For the fourth spot I lean towards Shenandoah but just like so many 1A districts there is a big drop from 3 to 4

My Top 10

1. Grundy Center
2. Dike New Hartford
3. Wilton
4. OABCIG
5. AHSTW
6. Emmetsburg
7. Regina
8. Sigourney Keota
9. Underwood
10. South Hamilton
