Just knew that would be Regina's first play.

7-0 on the Cook to Stenger double reverse flea flicker pass.

Sorry, West Lyon fans. Forgot to mention to look for that play in this one, because it's their big championship game play they've run almost every year, and Regina fans will be quick to point out that it's worked every time.

West Lyon with a nice drive on their 2nd possession. Illegal block set them back though after getting it 1st and goal at the 9.

Wildcats went for it on 4th and goal but Moser was stopped short at the 2.

That fumbling issue rears its ugly head again as Phillips was stripped after a nice catch and run, breaking several tackles before ultimately coughing it up inside the Regina 20.

First big turnover of the game goes to West Lyon with great field position.

4 plays later Chase Grotewold into the endzone on a short TD run.

7-7 with 2:25 to go in the 1st Qtr.

The biggest key against Regina's offense is tackling well in space. Two big plays for the Regals before the fumble saw at least two broken tackles before the ball carrier was brought down. If they make those first couple of guys miss, they have the ability to go the distance every time.

End of 1st Qtr

Iowa City Regina- 7
West Lyon- 7

Regals with the ball, when play resumes, near midfield. Regals looking to establish the run on this drive.

WL ran all over them in the 1st. 104 rushing yards at around 6 ypc. Regina's defense doesn't look as good as the one last season. Their offense is still deadly though.

3rd and 8 to start the 2nd qtr.

Cook completes a pass to a wide open Nick Phillips for a big gain. Next play Brinkman on a straight dive up the middle for 15 yds and a Regina touchdown.

14-7, Regals back in front.

Dylan Whalen with a big return on the kickoff into Regina territory. A rare return allowed by Jacob Adam.

However, clipping on West Lyon will bring it back to their own 32.

Timeout Regina so Cook can yell at his defense for giving up two first downs. WL is beating them up front now. Not sure they can match points with Regina's offense but they are running the ball well now.

West Lyon running the ball pretty well thus far. Much better than they did against St. Edmond.

The one thing West Lyon had in its favor would be that their line would not be overwhelmed by the pressure brought from Regina.

Wildcats now into Regina territory but faced with a 4th down.

And WL shoots themselves in the foot again with another penalty on a 4th and 1.

Wildcats go for it on 4th down and 6. Whalen had room to run, but took a shot down field. Just overthrew his receiver a bit. Two WL guys had a shot at it, but it'll be a turnover on downs.

I thought for sure when he hesitated right off the play fake he was gonna run for the 1st down. But oh well.

Second time West Lyon has had a short line to gain and jumped offsides to make it harder on themselves.

Haven't seen anything glaring that they have missed yet. 2 block in the back, 1 chop and a false start.

Regina hasn't committed many penalties all year, I wouldn't expect to see many in this game either.

Like I said earlier, Brinkman breaks 5 high waist tackle attempts for a big gain. Gotta wrap up against Regina or you'll be chasing turf.

Couple plays later, Phillips takes a hand off into the endzone. They don't waste a lot of time scoring.

21-7, Regina with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd Qtr. Big drive coming up for West Lyon.

WL needs to either run the clock out and\or score.
They really need to score on a long drive. Regina receives the ball at half and WL hasn't done much on defense.

Well there ya go. Adam with a procedure penalty as the kick goes out of bounds.

West Lyon faced with a 3rd and 6 again. Moser able to pick it up across midfield.

P.S. I'd say it's more Jake Brinkman running over West Lyon than anything else.

The refs? What are you talking about?

This game is perfectly well called so far and one hell of a physical matchup between the no doubt - 2 best teams in the state.

Regina's defense is giving up a lot of ground ever since the opening possession. There has only been one 3 and out. WL already has 192 yards of offense. Last week they had 234 all game. Regina is basically the Brinkman/Cook show but that's enough to dominate most 1A level teams.

West Lyon really does a nice job of setting up that quick give to the FB.

It might not result in big gains the first few times, but if they're effective with their option and stretch plays (and they have been today), then sneaking in that quick hitter to the FB later on can net some good yards.

WL is running really well between teh tackles, ICR will make adjustments at half for that. WL needs to take some chances on defense.

Nice pass, just a little out of bounds - nice to see that as it makes ICR respect it now.

Once again WL fails to score in the red zone. That's only 7 points to show for three trips already.

Dang, tough break for West Lyon.

Play action pass on 4th down. Whalen hit Grotewold in the endzone, but he was just out of bounds.

Good 1st half for both teams. West Lyon's mistakes (penalties) just hurting them a bit more.

End of 2nd Qtr

Iowa City Regina- 7 14

West Lyon- 7 0

I feel like West Lyon not being able to punch it in there at the end of the half was a huge game changer..reminded me of last week when St. Ed's couldn't quite get in before halftime.

Should be a great second half though! Great great game.

WL played a solid first half but killed themselves with a few crucial penalties at bad times. I think Regina will pull away a little in the 2nd half because it's going to be hard to compete with that quick strike offense. WL is moving the ball well but they have to pick up one first down at a time and convert several 3rd downs per drive. Regina has the ability to score in a couple plays. Cook and Brinkman are superb athletes. It will be interesting to see what Regina can do next season without them.

Is for you to say when there are 5 flags vs 0.
5-1 I watched the replay of the block(s) by 51 (1st flag) and 78 (2nd flag) in the back - they were legit. The false starts were obvious (62 and 58), the chop(LG) not so much but it did happen and it is something they have an emphasis this year.

So you want the 3 blocking penalties to go away is that it? Well, go watch the film and you will see them. Regina hasn't jumped offsides yet, hands are inside on their blocks, mostly do Zone blocking so chops and such are out of the picture.

..if you're a Regina supporter. Wow he's good.
You could put Cook and Brinkman on Eagle Grove and probably turn them into a legit playoff team.

gotta open it up a bit, even some short slants. letting Regina dictate what you do doesn't help.
