So, this is just a small part of a bigger idea of mine for Iowa High School Football going forward in the post-pandemic era (and in no way, shape, or form do I expect the IAHSAA to do any of this).

There's 40 teams in 4A, and more than likely they're going back to 9 game schedules, so........ we're gonna make it simple.

Four 10-team divisions. Everyone plays each other. Then a 16-team playoff for 4A, with the top 4 in each division making the postseason. Enjoy!

Northwest Division-
1. Sioux City East
2. Sioux City North
3. Sioux City West
4. Fort Dodge
5. Ames
6. Ankeny
7. Ankeny Centennial
8. Johnston
9. Urbandale
10. Waukee

Southwest Division-
1. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln
2. Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson
3. West Des Moines, Valley
4. West Des Moines, Dowling
5. Indianola
6. Southeast Polk
7. Des Moines, East
8. Des Moines, North
9. Des Moines, Lincoln
10. Des Moines, Roosevelt

Northeast Division-
1. Dubuque Hempstead
2. Dubuque Senior
3. Waterloo West
4. Cedar Falls
5. Marshalltown
6. Linn-Mar, Marion
7. Cedar Rapids, Jefferson
8. Cedar Rapids, Kennedy
9. Cedar Rapids, Prairie
10. Cedar Rapids, Washington

Southeast Division-
1. Davenport Central
2. Davenport North
3. Davenport West
4. Bettendorf
5. Pleasant Valley
6. Ottumwa
7. Iowa City High
8. Iowa City West
9. Iowa City, Liberty
10. Muscatine

And here's what the First Round of the playoffs would look like using this year's standings:

4NW Waukee vs 1SW Southeast Polk
3SW CB Lincoln vs 2 NW Sioux City East

4SW Indianola vs 1NW Ankeny
3NW Urbandale vs 2SW WDM, Dowling

4SE Davenport North vs 1NE Dubuque Hempstead
3NE Dubuque Senior vs 2SE Iowa City West

4NE Cedar Rapids Prairie vs 1SE Pleasant Valley
3SE Bettendorf vs 2NE Cedar Falls

So......yeah?

So......yeah?

not if thats how they playoffs would work... I don’t believe in giving 2 free passes to the dome to east side schools without having to beat any CIML teams in the playoff... you would need to match your west side Division qualifiers with East side division qualifiers in the playoffs so the best make it to the final 4. So in round 1 it would be 4NW versus 1NE and so on.... or 4NW versus 1SE... as long as it’s West vs East in the initial bracketing

I think the pods that they intended to have this year are much better than these divisions. The struggling programs play one another along with 2 or 3 good teams and the good programs play one another along with 2 or 3 struggling teams. RPI will sort things out well enough from there.
