First Round Match-Ups
-Kuemper @ BHRV
-Sioux Center @SCC
-Waukon @ Clear Lake
-Dike @ New Hampton
-Union @ A-P
-West Liberty @ Cascade
-Centerville @ Mt. Vernon
-Williamsburg @ PCM

My Picks...
R1 - BHRV, SSC, Waukon, New Hampton, Union, Cascade, Mt. Vernon, PCM

QF - BHRV, Waukon, Cascade, Mt. Vernon

SF - BHRV, Mt. Vernon

Champion - BHRV

BCMoore 1st Round Predictions
Waukon by 4-pts over Clear Lake
Sioux Center by 2-pts over SSC
Williamsburg by 3-pts over PCM
New Hampton by 7-pts over Dike
Union by 10-pts over AP
Cascade by 15-pts over West Liberty
BHRV by 45-pts over Kuemper
Mt. Vernon by 48-pts over Centerville

Although I really like BHRV to win it all, giving them 45-pts over Kuemper seems a bit much. Cascade getting 15 over West Liberty is also a bit surprising; thought that would be closer. Williamsburg and PCM look tight and should be one of the better games of the first round. With Union also favored, this puts both "wild card" teams as expected winners in the first round.

Kuemper is not that good! Southeast valley was only down 14-6 at halftime and had 3 T.O in 2nd half. BHRV may not win by 45 but will not sweat this one out to much!

First Round Scores:
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 37, Kuemper Catholic, Carroll 14 (Pickers went 11-0)
Cascade, Western Dubuque 49, West Liberty 21 (Pickers went 8-3)
Mount Vernon 42, Centerville 10 (Pickers went 11-0)
New Hampton 21, Dike-New Hartford 14 (Pickers went 9-2)
South Central Calhoun 37, Sioux Center 7 (Pickers went 2-9)
Union, La Porte City 42, Aplington-Parkersburg 0 (Pickers went 6-5)
Waukon 46, Clear Lake 16 (Pickers went 9-2)
Williamsburg 18, PCM, Monroe 17 (Pickers went 8-3)

Standings After 1st Round:

UnionFootballFan: 7-1
BCMoore: 7-1
Ted 5454: 7-1
NWIowaSioux: 7-1
Chow22: 6-2
hamalot: 6-2
Herky the Uruk-hai: 5-3
TresNorthwest: 5-3
basketballnut21: 5-3
walkingstick24: 5-3
Waukon88: 4-4

"What Were They Thinking" Picks...
  • South Central Calhoun 37, Sioux Center 7 (Pickers went 2-9) - The worst game picked for the group in round one. This one can be understood. Both teams had one loss with Sioux Center's loss being a better one (to BHRV). Sioux Center also had a tougher SOS.
  • Union, La Porte City 42, Aplington-Parkersburg 0 (Pickers went 6-5) - The second worst game picked for the group in round one. This one I can't quite understand. Union had a much tougher SOS, A-P played some closer games against weaker teams, and Union has dominated A-P over the past decade. This one had Union by multiple scores written all over it. While there may be some "homer" in this, that stats all support it as well.
QF Match-Ups - A Trip to the Dome on the Line:
SCC @ BHRV
Waukon @ New Hampton
Union @ Cascade
Williamsburg @ Mt. Vernon

BCMoore QF Prediction
11/03/2017 2A 5 ( 7- 3) LaPorte City Union 2A 4 (10- 0) Cascade 2.72
11/03/2017 2A 7 ( 8- 2) Williamsburg 2A 3 ( 9- 1) Mount Vernon 13.54
11/03/2017 2A 6 ( 9- 1) South Cent Calhoun 2A 1 ( 9- 1) Boyden-Hull-R Valley 21.02
11/03/2017 2A 2 ( 9- 1) Waukon 2A 11 ( 8- 2) New Hampton -19.33

Notes:
*According to BCMoore, the best game of the QFs will be Union @ Cascade, with the most confidence being with Mt. Vernon and BHRV.
*3 of the 4 QF games are repeats of regular season match-ups.
*Each time the opportunity has presented itself, Union has beaten teams in the playoffs that they lost to during the regular season. Cascade scored with 30-seconds to go in the game in Week 9 to take the lead and beat Union.
*Mt. Vernon and Williamsburg also met in week 9, with Mt. Vernon rolling 42-14. Expect a closer game, but Mt. Vernon still coming out on top.
*Waukon beat New Hampton 28-20 in Week 2 and will be there again in the QFs. Waukon is the only road team favored by BCMoore and is expected to win by more in the QFs - I agree and think they are playing their best ball.

Will Waukon be able to make it past the quarterfinals this year with NFV not in the playoffs? Seems to be one of those matchups the last few years where Waukon hasn’t been able to match up physically and in the end.. get bulldozed. Good thing for them there is no bulldozer this year. I’m sure the whole town of Waukon is happy about that.

Hasn't NFV only beaten Waukon once in the playoffs in the past decade or so? I personally think Waukon is playing better than anybody right now. Looking forward to Waukon vs. BHRV in the Semis.

Semi-Final Match-Ups
Union vs. Williamsburg
BHRV vs. Waukon

[Will post BC Semi-Final predictions, once available]

Notes:

*The semi-finals will include two "wild card" teams. Great case to extend the playoffs. Both teams could have easily been left out due to being in loaded districts.
*District 4 has 2 of the four remaining teams. The only team to be knocked out (Cascade) was knocked out by another D4 team. Clearly the best district in the state.
*Both Union and Williamsburg avenged Week 9 losses. Union lost the lead in week 9 with <30 seconds to go in the game, Union gained the lead with <5 seconds to go in the playoffs. Williamsburg got blown out in Week 9, but turned the table and controlled the game in the playoffs.
*Waukon continued their dominating performance and is perhaps the hottest team left. Their playoff games have been dominating, lopsided wins.
*BHRV won a competitive game against SSC and is back to the dome, going for 2 straight championships.
*Potential still exists for a rematch of last year's 2A title game between BHRV and Union.

On a personal note, I think BHRV vs. Waukon will be a heck of a game. I think the state did pretty solid job with the bracket this year and appreciate that this match-up didn't happen sooner.

I went 3-1 in the Quarters.

As for my semifinal picks, I'm gonna go with Waukon and Union. I really do think that both games could go either way. It's gonna be a great year in the dome for 2A.

All picks were made before first round. We're not doing round by round to make it more challenging. You had BHRV, Waukon, Cascade, and Mt. Vernon in your original picks.

BCMoore Semi-Final Predictions:
(9- 2) Williamsburg 2A 5 (8- 3) LaPorte City Union - Union by 4.12
(10- 1) Waukon 2A 1 (10- 1) Boyden-Hull-R Valley - BHRV by 7.02

I think the line for BHRV over Waukon is too high...both games feel like "coin flip" type of games.

I only recall one post-season meeting between Waukon and NFV as well but may be wrong? But Waukon did play them this year I believe. Would be like saying NFV doesn't have to face a bulldozer like Spirit Lake again....although just one playoff meeting not a true litmus test. I'm sure the whole town of West Union happy about that.

Although Williamsburg's last win over Mount Vernon was impressive last week after getting smacked in the regular season, lets all try to remember the last time we saw Mount Vernon play defense in the playoffs. Last year against Union, Mount Vernon linebackers were playing 8 yards off the ball like Union was going to try and pass with Vaughan in the backfield and ended up giving up 49 points. In other words, do not let Williamsburg fool you just because they beat a "tuff" Mount Vernon team. Unions win over a not very good undefeated Cascade team is a little more impressive over a defenseless Mount Vernon team. That is why I think Union will be a 3 seed in the finals. As for the other side, I agree that it is a coin flip. Waukon has the best player in 2a while BHRV are the defending champs. We should expect a great semi-finals game and the winner will most likely win it all.

NFV and Waukon have matched up 5 times in the last 4 years. Both teams have had the talent to make deep playoff runs in the previous 3 seasons prior to this season. Even though there has only been one playoff match up between the teams (NFV rushed for the ball 70 times for 400 yards)... Bulldozed. The hawks have played a big role in the Indians not making the playoffs last year. Given that the district that NFV and Waukon has played in the last 4 years has been LOADED. This being the first time Waukon has made it to the dome since making it to the finals in the 2013 season...

Would love to see a Waukon vs Union match up in the finals to represent the district. Although I think that would be a cake walk for Waukon with 2a kind of being in a down year. Considering last years Union team would stomp all over this years Union team.

To address the Spirit Lake comment... I'm sure every 2a football town in Iowa is happy they don't have to face a team like Spirit Lake again!

You can bring up rushing yards....but I believe final score was 24 20 in playoff matchup. Not sure about that? Waukon might have led at half? Lots of teams bulldozed NFV’s playoff hopes this year. The most recent matchup had Waukon as the bulldozer. I have tons of respect for the NFV program but they are not playing this weekend. Have a good offseason. Waukon is still practicing and will have its work cut out against a very good Boyden Hull team.

Well of course it ended up being a close game considering it was a match up between two really good teams. But my original question of if Waukon will be able to get over the hump was answered. Largely impart to there not being a physically imposing team in their way. Didn't necessarily have to be NFV. I still don't think you understand the term bulldozing.

According to the wonderful internet a bulldozer is a powerful tractor with a broad upright blade at the front for clearing ground.

Or in football terms, lining up in a double tight formation with a full back and mushing forward for 4 yards a play. Winning the line of scrimmage, chew clock, beat up the opposition, and eventually, by the 4th quarter break them. Good ole fashion cold weather football. Not exactly Waukon football, not exactly what most teams like to go up against. Not exactly what shot gun teams know how to do when it comes to the inches football games can be decided by.

Yes, the playoff match up was a very good game. For the other games before this season not so much.

Good luck to Waukon aka Schwartz getting the ball to Snitker in anyway possible, in the dome.

Waukon vs Williamsburg in the championship. Great job to both teams.

Watched the Union/Williamsburg game and thought it was a good, physical game against two pretty evenly matched teams. Union came out and looked like the better team in the first half, Williamsburg came out strong and finished in the second. I thought their defensive adjustments were the difference.

Glad to see two wild cards make the dome and one will be playing in the championship. Great case to expand the playoffs to at least some degree.

As for my championship prediction, I'm taking Waukon. They are playing better than anybody right now.

I watched both of the semi-finals games and the only team the impressed me was Waukon. BHRV appeared to be scared to run the ball against Waukon as I watched them pass over and over again. Last time I checked, Snitker plays DB and BHRV payed the price for throwing so much. As for Waukon's offense, they were slow at times but always seemed to bust a big play when needed.

The Union Williamsburg game as you said appeared to be in Union control until halftime. Williamsburg seemed to be a balanced offense with some pretty good RB's and receivers. One major problem I did notice with Union was their QB. Late in the game, he dropped back the majority of the plays and made it obvious that he was scared to make a throw. After his terrible interception (not only into good coverage, but double coverage) he would drop back and not even look at his receivers and would try to run. This made Union one dimensional and hurt them dearly. In the end, Williamsburg was just a little better of a football team than Union.

As for Williamsburg vs Waukon, I think that Waukon should win but there are a few ways for Williamsburg to make it a good ball game. Unlike BHRV, Williamsburg I think could establish a decent run game. They need to avoid throwing the ball into the best player in 2a's territory. On defense, Williamsburg will need to have their players hydrated and flying to the ball in order to stop Snitker for four quarters. Even with all this, I think Williamsburg will come up short and Waukon will win the game. Their players are hungry for a title and I think they are the more physical team.

Championship Match-Up
Williamsburg vs. Waukon

BCMoore Predication
(11- 1) Waukon 2A 6 (10- 2) Williamsburg - Waukon by 12+

Who do you have and why?

Just to throw a monkey in - I'm extremely disappointed in that IHSAA sold out on the TV rights for semis and finals. The girls kept it local and FREE for we the parent taxpayers (to our local schools) while the boys of Boone sold us out. We received an email from our school district's AD as to how to watch the semis and finals on the internet. It only works if you have certain connections, like DISH, etc. It just plain stinks. Who in heavens name has any connection with Chicago? This is Iowa and for the money we spend on our schools, we should be able to watch it for FREE like we used to on IPTV. Every Iowan should email, write, text, call to the boys of Boone and let them know that they screwed up and need to correct it, and stop filling their coffers. I'd wager that the Boone boys / IHSAA doesn't buy the trophies, but they are most likely bought by people like Farm Bureau or Fareway, etc. So they don't need TV rights money for that.

Am I the only one who thinks West Sioux would win 2a this year?
Interesting thought.
I've only seen them play in the dome. From what I saw, they have the athletes... I can confidently say I think they would be a semifinal team (mostly because they would only have to beat BHRV to get there). I wouldn't put my money on them winning it though.

Thanks for the well wishes walkingstick! Not sure how a team that doesn't bulldoze had the state's leading 2A rusher? Which team had the most rushing yards this season? Maybe go look look that up on the internet and put away those old high school yearbooks about NFV football. Then go look in the mirror at a person that anonymously takes shots at high school kids they've never met and tries to belittle what they have accomplished. Has to make you feel good about yourself! But the rest of us realize it is now 2017. Thanks UFF for all the good info and stats you post. A Waukon-Union rematch in the finals would have been a dandy. Have a ton of respect for the Union program. Will come back to this forum next fall. Have a good offseason everyone and appreciate all the kids who provided so much entertainment!! On to basketball and wrestling.
