Thinking the best games of week 1 will be Decorah vs. NFV and Union vs. Marion.

Union
West Marshall

Good Luck to all teams and lets hope for a fun and injury free season for everyone!!!

Anamosa at Monticello ( (ND))
Benton Community at Oelwein ( (ND))
Cascade, Western Dubuque at Maquoketa ( (ND))
Clayton Ridge, Guttenberg at Beckman Catholic, Dyersville ( (ND))
Decorah at North Fayette Valley ( (ND))
MFL MarMac at Waukon ( (ND))
Union, La Porte City at Marion ( (ND))
West Marshall, State Center at Columbus Catholic, Waterloo ( (ND))

My reasoning:
Monticello underachieved last year but have many 3 year starters coming back, Benton is a really good 3A and Oelwein is a bad 2A, Beckman returns quite a bit and Clayton Ridge lost most of there playoff team, Decorah is a talented 3A team and I think that NFV will have a down year compared to recent history, Waukon could contend for a state title, Marion should contend in a tough 3A and while I think Union will be in contention for a playoff spot, they really lost some studs from last year, finally if this was both teams first game I might take Columbus but with it being West Marshall's 2nd I'll take them

Week 2 Games to Pick:

Waukon at New Hampton ( (ND))

Monticello at Camanche ( (ND))
North Fayette Valley at Waverly-Shell Rock ( (ND))
Union, La Porte City at Vinton-Shellsburg ( (ND))
Waukon at New Hampton ( (ND))

I'd say overall these are a little bit tougher than last week. CPU should handle Oelwein, Cascade shouldn't have much trouble beating Central DeWitt if they play like they did last week, Columbus vs. East Marshall is a tough one for me to call, I'll take East Marshall since they have a win on the year, I think Western Dubuque will have more athletes then Beckman in a competitive game, Monticello should handle Camanche, Waverly should beat NFV rather convincingly, Union beats a bad Vinton Shellsburg team, and Waukon is too much for New Hampton in a good game.

Waukon at Cascade, Western Dubuque

My Week 4 Picks...
Beckman
NFV
Union
Waukon

Three lopsided games...Waukon at Cascade should be better, but I still see Waukon taking that one by multiple scores.

I'd say Waukon will beat Cascade as they look very tough on film however do not go by the Cascade NFV final score. Cascade more than doubled NFV's offensive yard totals and failed to score 4-5 times inside the 5 yard line. Some credit there goes to NFV as well. That game could have easily been 3-4 TD win for Cascade. NFV's one touchdown was stopped a least a half a yard short as well. Not sure what the refs saw.

2 games are easy to pick, 1 should happen, and 1 I see as a barn-burner.

Wow...how did Cascade get stopped "4-5 times inside the 5-yard line"? Is that some kind of record? I was about to credit NFV for a tough game but sounds like Cascade just didn't capitalize. What are the strengths of Cascade? Size? Sounds like Waukon will have its hands full.

Total yards were Cascade 384 to NFV 187. Cascade had 3 TO's and NFV had 1.

Ran the same slant 2 plays in a row and a LB made a great play on a pick in the endzone. I think a couple run stops as well. It might not have been 4-5 inside the 5 looking back but total yards and TO's tells more of a story. Not often you can lose the TO ratio 3-1 and still win and out gain the opponent by close to 200 yards.

Cascade is balanced. Good defense and can pass or run effectively. Got some good RB's and fairly tall receivers and both lines play well. They are pretty good sized but not deep on the line now that 2 starters are out for the year. I'm not sure they are of Waukon's quality after watching film but we will see. I'd say Cascade will have to play extremely well to win. I'd say one of their best traits is how physical they are for their size. Its the most physical and best tackling team I've seen at Cascade which has shown up in the defensive results.

Week 4 Results:
Beckman Catholic, Dyersville 31, Columbus Catholic, Waterloo 0
Cascade, Western Dubuque 25, Waukon 20
Monticello 34, North Fayette Valley 26
Union, La Porte City 58, Oelwein 0

Week 5 Games to Pick:

Beckman Catholic, Dyersville at Union, La Porte City
Columbus Catholic, Waterloo at Waukon
Monticello at Cascade, Western Dubuque
Oelwein at North Fayette Valley

Not sure who is voting over at the Register for the top 2A teams but IMHO Waukon dropping out of the top 10 is wrong. They are a very good football team.

I decided to take a look...for those interested, here is what the DMR has for their rankings this week:
CLASS 2A
1. Williamsburg (4-0) beat Camanche 63-6
2. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (3-1) beat Sheldon 62-14
3. Cascade (4-0) beat Waukon 25-20
4. Mount Vernon (3-1) beat Mid-Prairie (Wellman) 49-0
5. South Central Cal (3-1) beat Shenandoah 72-7
6. Sioux Center (4-0) beat Cherokee 41-20
7. New Hampton (3-1) beat Hampton-Dumont 41-20
8. Union (LaPorte City) (3-1) beat Oelwein 58-0
9. Carroll Kuemper (3-1) beat Clarinda 42-0
10. Aplington-Parkersburg (4-1) beat Dike-New Hartford 26-7

A few of my call-outs...
-Waukon beat a very good New Hampton team, who is ranked 7th.
-Cascade did beat Waukon, so you have to give them that. I think a #3 ranking is fair for them.
-I also don't disagree with Williamsburg and BHRV being 1-2. BHRV is my pick to win it all and repeat as champions. Williamsburg won't be tested until late, but have dominated who they have played so far.

I would slide Waukon in about #5 or #6 at this point. They have a great win (against #7 New Hampton) and "good" loss (against #3 Cascade). That's a better resume than teams 5-10.

Keep in mind BHRV got beat by a 1A team however I believe West Lyon is generally a very solid program. I recall a few years ago Cascade was in the top teams and lost to 1A Regina and it dropped them in the polls. I agree that it doesn't appear Williamsburg will get tested until the final week against Mt. Vernon. Based off competition played I'd say Mt. Vernon and Cascade should both be ahead of BHRV. Mt. Vernon got beat by an extremely good 3A Solon team and came back to beat a very good 3A team in West Delaware. If Cascade beats Monticello they may jump BHRV.

Union will get a bit of test this week against Beckman however I have heard Beckman's top RB broke his hand and maybe out for the year. They still have some offensive threats to put points on the board. The QB Vaske is a great athlete and is a dual threat to contend with.

I actually agree with Luke's or core 3's rankings more than the Registers or Gazettes with the top 4-5 being pretty interchangeable.

1.) Williamsburg 4-0 (Previous Ranking: #1)

2.) Cascade 4-0 (Previous Ranking: #2)

3.) Mount Vernon 3-1 (Previous Ranking: #4)

4.) Union 3-1 (Previous Ranking: #5)

5.) Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 3-1 (Previous Ranking: #8)

6.) Clear Lake 3-1 (Previous: #6)

7.) Sioux Center 4-0 (Previous Ranking: #9)

8.) West Marshall 3-1 (Previous: #10)

9.) Waukon 3-1 (Previous Ranking: #7)

10.) Aplington-Parkersburg 4-1 (Previous Ranking: Not Rated)

True. I have a senior playing who missed a good portion of last years season due to a baseball injury. Can't imagine him going thru that like a couple of our sr lineman. Hurt before the first snap.
