Going to be some interesting changes in football classifications I think this next cycle. Will the state finally make some of these 8 man teams that have been above 120 for more than a few years finally have to move up to 11 man? One thing we do know for sure is the number of classes will stay the same as their were rumors of 2 8 man classes but that is not going to happen.

i am not fan of 8man,,,,,hoping state forces them to consolidate with a larger school, and play 11man the way it is suppose to be played.it would also reduce all these classes we have now to....my thinking is that 8 man will continue, some reduced football in some 30 states i believe. there are even 9 man and 6 man football teams, not sure where that is, maybe alaska

Some Dam good football players in 8 man and I for one hope they don’t force them to consolidate, 8 man has its role. My point was you have a hand full of teams that have been above that 120 count but for some reason get a waiver to continue to play 8 man. Heck some states including Texas play 7 man and 6 man football. You don’t need 11 guys on the field to see good football but it is a different game that really highlights more athletes than bigger line play.

I have never heard of 7 man other than in the summer, Minnesota plays 9 man. 6 man in Texas is wild, very different game but fun to watch.

The only thing I don’t like is when schools with 35 kids out are playing 8 man.

Nebraska also has a 6 man class.

Yes, but that’s not enough to play a JV/V schedule in 11 man. Ask Wapello, L&M and even West Burlington/ND how that works out. All three couldn’t play us in JV this year.

I think if you look at most teams rosters in class A and for the most part 1A as well you will see on avg roster sizes between 30 and 40 kids 9 - 12. Most small schools in these classes don't play curtain raisers on Friday nights because of these numbers and quarter limitations but most still do play a JV sched just on a different nights. The state rules make it tough for teams to play doubleheaders on a single night with its limitations on how much you can play as you see most teams using those younger kids on special teams as they don't count as a game played.

Last year the Department of Education released the enrollment numbers for all public schools on December 8th, these are the numbers that the boys and girls union would use to determine classifications for next year. I would guess that they already have them, but they should be released to the public soon, which then you can take that information and determine 9-11 enrollments.

Yes, they should have them. I believe they were due October 1.

thought it was weird they dont take 9-12 on bed numbers? what is the reason for 9-11, i dont get the philosphy behind that. maybe the boys at boone know something i dont know. do all the states in the country take 9-11

I think it is because it would require using 8-11, and in the past there were some middle schools that sent to more then one high school. So it was just easier to do 9-11. Plus there are a ton of small parochial schools that also end in 8th grade, so the numbers could be a little skewed.

The official public school numbers from the department of education have been released. I haven't had time to look through them all, but just out of curiosity I looked up the 8 man schools that are usually close to the cutoff line and here is what I found.

Midland 137
BGM 135
Southeast Warren 126
Martensdale St. Marys 142
Northwood Kensett 128
New London is exactly 120

Link to this?

We don't know the enrollments of the parochial schools by grade, I can find the enrollment of the entire building but not by grade. I also haven't found the FRL numbers for this year, although I would guess that they are similar to last year.

The other big question that needs to be answered is the "qualifying" number for 8 man. Because I think there are a good number of A schools that could now qualify for 8 man if they don't almost put a rule like the cutoff is 120 of the real enrollment. I feel that if they don't do this then there won't be enough class A schools and those small schools who want to play 11 man will kind of be put in a situation where it is either play 8 man and don't give the opportunity to play to as many kids, or play schools much larger then yourself.

Also I have heard that North Tama is going to continue to play 11 man for at least 2 more years, can anyone confirm this?

What adjustments need to be made other than socioeconomic? Anyways, appears Mepo will definitely be 2A.
I found them. A few class A schools who could possibly be going up or down depending on how much the socioeconomic thing factors in. Obviously these beds dont have that figured in yet. Obviously some of these teams that could drop to 8 man probably will stay 11 man.

Possibly up to 1A
Grundy Center 187
Alburnett 197
Hudson 193
Wapsie Valley 161

Possible Drop to 8 man
Belle Plain 83
North Tama 94
North Linn 124
West Hancock 120

Lynnville Sully could also go 8 man, but would guess that they won't.

Looking at school board minutes, Belle Plaine will go 8 man and North Tama won't.

Their are a number of A schools that could go 8 man based on the socioeconomic scale and if they kept it at 120 cap. Teams like North Linn, Nashua, ST Ansger, Clayton Ridge, East Buchanan, Postvill, BCLUW and Columbus Junction just to name a few. That is why from what I am hearing is they will lower the cap to like 110-112 for 8 man and that will keep class A together for at least 2 more years. Of the teams I mentioned I think most would stay 11 man if they have the choice.

The other thing with some of these schools is that they have big and small classes, it isn't uncommon for them to have a class of 60 followed by a class of 30. So as a school they have to look at long term trends when deciding between 8 man and 11 man, because it's not easy to go back and forth.

I have a question about CAM, and whether or not they combine with Whiting? If they do they would be well above the cutoff for 8 man.

Lynnville Sully coach has said in the past that he will quit if they go 8 man. There is no talk at this time about going that route.

0 chance those two are sharing. 1.5+ hours away from each other. Has to be a typo. Whiting has shared with Siouxland Christian in the past for 8 man football.

This is what I have for number, I used the FRL from last year as I haven't found this years information yet, I would assume it is similar, and I used it for the building. The parochial schools are the number from last year, and a zero FRL, I don't know if that is true or not. I will also say that I am unsure of some of the sharing agreements. Like if St. Albert is sharing with a small christian school.

They are listed by the FRL figured number, but also included the "real" enrollment.

I also didn't include any "for sure" 8 man schools, only the ones like Midland who have a "real" enrollment over the 120 number.

Assuming the numbers in each class stay the same the following schools would be the smallest in each class.

CB Lincoln
Ballard
Hampton Dumont CAL
Dike New Hartford
Emmetsburg

Now I will say I don't have the numbers for parochial schools, and the FRL can be off a little bit, so I won't say this is 100%, but an estimate.

PNation- Very interesting, that had to have taken some time! Thanks for putting it together.

You guys are welcome, like I said they are estimates, without knowing all of the data I can't give exact numbers, but if a school is right in the middle of a class more then likely they are going to be in that class.

I heard the ihsaa will vote on January 12 on using the irl for enrollment. The football coaches already approved it

West Branch's number will be closer to 150 than 166 as the above poster laid out (with FRL factored in).
