1. Beyond impressive first 3 games: 31-point win over #7 Waukee, 33 point win over #16 IC West, 38-point win over #9 SE Polk

2. Since that time: 17-point loss to #3 Dowling and 2-point loss to #21 Centennial

* personnel changes?
* players now playing different positions?

Jekyll and Hyde. Schitzo results. Looks like they could get bounced in the Second Round, with the right opponent or win it all.

*the rankings used to compare these teams? (IE how can a team be #1 when they have lost to the alleged #3 team as well as the #21 team). Start with the obvious and the rankings looks like the answer to me.

This happens when you have multiple blowout against top 10 teams and close losses against other top team. The team is inconsistent, yet its average performance is still wildly high.

Beating 2 top ten teams by 30 means you are wildly successful (or at least potentially, on any given Friday night). I may do some research about this, how many times has a team beaten multiple top 10 teams by 30.

Des Moines Register article said, to the best of my reading comprehension, that WDM Valley had

* multiple turnovers
* 60%-100% more yards gained.

With only 700 or so kids per class how is Valley supposed to field a consistent team? How can they possibly match up against teams with over half of their numbers?

numbers aren't everything. If they were, Lincoln would be championship contenders. Since 2009, Valley has been more like how they were during the era of guys like Scheideman, Brcka, Woodley, Spellman etc in which they were pretty solid (79-80% win record) but not necessarily a dynasty. Things are cyclical I guess.

My thought
Lombardi is becoming a head case like his dad...

Valley is toast in the second round. They will be a #2 seed and with the primary factor being location the Association will have no choice but the match Valley against Dowling in the second round. If they don't, the rest of the CIML schools will go nuts and force Boone to change how they produce the pairings in the future. If they are both #1 seeds they should be on opposite sides of the bracket. They are not this year and they should play early. If Valley does not like that, too bad. Should have thought about that before the game against Centennial.

Aren't they doing some weird kind of reseeding shit?

It's not really reseeding. They pair 4s at 1s and 3s at 2s in the First Round. The Second Round, the only guarantee is that 1s will not be paired together. They will try to produce non-rematches while still using the 125-mile travel rule, if possible. Considering the unlikelihood that a 1-seed loses, they will all be paired up against a 2- or 3-seed who won in the First Round. So depending on who wins, Valley and Dowling is totally up in the air. There should be no way they play each other in the UNI-Dome, unless multiple 1-seeds(Ankeny Centennial & Waukee) lose prior to the quarterfinals.

> Valley is toast in the second round.

Why? Is it inevitable that they will lose?

I look forward to your insights in the playoff prediction game.

Look for something like this in the Second Round... I am going to predict Ankeny beats SE Polk Friday and Fort Dodge Beats Urbandale, which could go the other way. For the sake of this, I am assuming both those happen, you could easily switch the names of Fort Dodge and flip flop Ankeny and Polk.

Centennial vs. Fort Dodge
Ankeny vs. Valley
Dowling vs. Southeast Polk
Waukee vs. Johnston

While the IHSAA wants the big money gate, they also try to avoid re-matched early in the playoffs if at all possible. This gets a re-match of Johnston-Waukee still so they could opt for a different re-match, but Fort Dodge will only play Centennial or Ankeny second round because those are closest travel locations. If Urbandale is a 2 seed, then sending Urbandale to Waukee and Johnston to Centennial eliminates all re-matches.

I'm more of the thinking that SE Polk beats Ankeny, but your theory and assumptions about the rematches are on target.
