I'm going this way

1. Solon
2. Xavier
3. DCG
4. Waverly Shell Rock
5. Heelan
6. Glenwood
7. Pella
8. Benton
9. Washington
10. Carlisle

To me Solon has been the most impressive team so far, Xavier will be challenged by Waverly and Benton but has two good wins, DCG has the best win of anyone, I think Waverly is greatly undervalued they beat West Delaware last year in the playoffs and return a ton Heelan looks to be back but I think they'll be challenged by SBL and Storm Lake, Glenwood has been solid and the CBTJ win is more impressive then people know, Pella will still be there in the end, Bentons win over Marion is a very good win, and they are experienced, if Washingtons an stays healthy they will be a contender and Carlisle has been putting it on people. I think that 3A is still kind of a cluster that hopefully sorts itself out.

BC Moore's Week 2 Rankings
Biased 51% on 2017 scores, 49% last year's strength scores.

1. Solon - 188.79
2. Pella - 183.15
3. DC-G - 182.45
4. Carlisle - 180.60
5. Heelan - 179.51
6. Xavier - 179.45
7. W-SR - 176.33
8. Storm Lake - 174.58

DCG!!! Respect the Mustangs!

I feel like Decorah and Harlan are lurking and will be in the rankings before long.

DCG should probably be ranked but jump all the way to 3 after beating a Pella team that has little varsity experience from last years team?? Lol

Pella's lack of varsity experience showed Friday night. Great coaching which usually has the kids ready so they make few errors. Not the case Friday night but I've got no doubt they will improve.

Preseason all the DCG talk had been around Clapper and the offense but it is the DCG defense which right now is their strength, especially against the rush. Pella managed just 15yds on 24 carries. In week one ADM managed only 20yds on 18 carries. That's pretty stout. By contrast DCG ran for 164yds on Pella and 168 on ADM. If they are able to maintain that kind of rushing dominance that would go a long way in making them a player in the second season.

As far as rankings? Pretty early to tell who should be where but I'm comfortable putting Solon and Xavier on top. I'm not comfortable having Pella or Carlisle in the top 5.

WSR should be in top ten, my bad. Heelan and Storm Lake play this week so that should be interesting.

2 teams out there that should be ranked,,,that are not..clearly better teams that are now ranked.

nice win by dallas grimes...but if they meet pella again..its a flip of the coin who wins it

1. Xavier- Clear number one
2. DCG- Looked good before, look great after dethroning pella
3. Solon- breazed through first two games
4.Pella- A close game loss doesn't count the dutch out.
5. Heelan-Looked as expected thus far, big storm lake game soon.
6. Glenwood- Beaten two 4a teams, Thomas Jefferson with big running back Cameron Baker is a playoff contender
7.Waverly Shell Rock-no reason not to rank this talented team
8. Carlisle- This team to me has looked pretty good against decent competion.
9. Storm Lake- Weak district will keep me from ranking these guys higher, they did return alot of players form last year and have looked solid espcially agaisnt Pocahontas.
10. Webster City- I think this team isn't getting enough respect.
Just outside:
-Washington- has looked good, but they have more to prove
-Boone- I thought they would be having a down year, but so far I have ben proven wrong.
-Carroll
-West Delaware

Its a coulda woulda shoulda friday night, It really should have been 17-0 at half DCG. Two trips inside the 10 resulted in 0 points, Pella's defensive is still one of the tops in the state. DCG didn't execute or the score wouldn't of been close. I agree with the above post about the jump all the way to third but this is Iowa Preps rankings. Not that the Des Moines Register is correct, but they had DCG at 6th going into week 2. Its a huge win but don't know about to third. I always like the underdog role. Solon is solid and will be a force. Carlise is pretty tough and will be in the playoffs. I really believe they will win that district. District 2 is still going to be a tough district with Boone, Webster City, and DCG will all battle. 3A is really wide open.

Going to be an interesting matchup in a couple weeks between Carlisle and Pella. IMO Pella has considerable work to do yet in the next couple weeks and might not win that game.

Carlisle's O-line has definitely been dominant so far the first couple games, simply wearing guys out. 581 yards rushing last week against Gilbert. And I know it was just a scrimmage, but Indianola had no answers during their scrimmage with Carlisle scoring 3 or 4 times to 1 while starters were in the first half.
That being said, Pella has been so dominant in past years against the run, and are so well coached. It's a new year, and Carlisle lost very little from a year ago, but it's still Pella..
Wish I didn't have to wait a week and a half to find out how it'll play out.

No way you hater. They are still good.

Sorry to burst your bubble Dew but just because an orange haired buffoon rode into Harlan one day last year and said, "I'm going to make Harlan football great again!"........doesn't make it so.

DipStick - you give DCG fans a bad name. Jealousy is no way to live.

Go back to your mom's basement in Grimes and play some more video games while she makes you a sandwich.

Actually I think it is your jealousy which is coming out in this thread. My parent's basement in very comfy. On the other hand I can understand how traumatic it must have been growing up in your mom's double wide in the middle of "Cyclone Country".

The only double wide trailer needed is an RV for tail gating before and after the games!

DCG has a darn good team, but the fact remains that they only beat Pella 10-7. Stickman00 must not think DCG is very good either, since in his opinion, Pella is not very good. The game was decided on one big play with under 5 minutes left in the game. I was so impressed with the DCG players, students and fans after the game and the respect they show for the Pella players. It was awesome to witness. Stickman00 must have went home, because It's obvious to me that Stickman00 is not one of the DCG fans I describe above.

Regardless of how they do this year, Harlan's glory days in football are gone.
i was surprised to see harlan,s enrollment at 398, somewhat smaller than i was thinking. 3a has become more difficult in the last few years, and harlan,s dominance may be over. this years team is good, the defense is tough, and when the #1 qb comes back, be interesting to see how they perform...

I agree with Stickman80.

Harlan's "dominance" does not exist anymore - except for maybe in the Harlan faithful's eyes. 15 years ago people thought of Harlan when they thought of the West side of the state, but that is simply not the case anymore. I would say relevance is restricted to a 10 year window - at the most.

Harlan in the last 10 years:

- 94-27 record *according to Quik Stats
- 1 Championship (2009)
- 2 Finals (2009 and 2011)
- 1 Semifinals (2013)
- 3 Quarterfinals (2006, 2008 and 2010)
- Missed the playoffs in 2014 and 2016 (when the format allowed for 4 teams from each district to qualify)
- Have not made it past the 1st round since 2013

Dominance, in my opinion, is one team running the table in-district, beating rivals, and winning championships. If you want to narrow it down to West side dominance, I would say Heelan has taken that reputation from Harlan and it was 5-10 years ago that it happened. As far as statewide Dominance goes - the East side has been crowned champion 7 of the last 10 years. This fact just furthers my point that Harlan is not and has not been dominant in a long time.

If you want to talk about dominance then talk about Pella winning 3 championships in a row (2014-2016), Regina winning 6 championships in a row (2010-2015), Solon winning 4 championships in a row (2007-2010), or WDM Dowling winning 5 of the last 7 championships (2010 and 2013-2016). All of those examples are within the last 10 years. In 2005 Harlan would have been on that list after winning three in a row, but today's Seniors were 4 or 5 years old back then. Is now really the first time that you can say "Harlan's dominance may be over", as if you still aren't sure yet?

Harlan was an animal for a number of years.....and yes, they have dropped off after dominating for 40+ years.

1971-1980 - 78-16
1981-1990 - 110-9
1991-2000 - 109-13
2001-2010 - 111-10
2011-2017 - 43-22
* Records according to BCMoore's website

I still maintain they are one of just a handful of schools with the potential to win a state title in Class 3A.

There's no question that Harlan dominated for years before the timeframe that I mentioned. The fact of the matter is, the kids playing outside of Harlan's geographical area don't even know or care about what Harlan did when their mom and dad were 18 years old. A 30-40+ year old perspective of Harlan doesn't matter AT ALL. The kids playing the game know of those teams I listed that actually dominated in the time of their lives when they were aware of high school sports. Frankly, Harlan is not one of those teams.

DCG has a darn good team, but the fact remains that they only beat Pella 10-7. Stickman00 must not think DCG is very good either, since in his opinion, Pella is not very good. I have no problems speaking for myself. So far the only person to say "Pella Is not very good" has been you.

Heelan in the last 10 years
113-20 record
2 championships (08) & (13)
4 runner ups (07), (10), (12), & (14)
Missed playoff in '16 for first time since 1986.

Heelan has been the most dominant team in the past TEN years on the western side of the state if not the whole state in 3A.

Heelan missed the playoffs in 2006, 1999, 1994 so yes they barely miss them, but not quite that long of a streak. I would say in the last 10 years it is either Heelan or Pella as the best 3A team in the state Pella is 111-16.

My bad. You're right, Heelan hasn't had losing season since 1986. Those 3 years with no playoffs were when Heelan was in 4A vs. Pella and Harlan being 3A forever.
