Saint Albert’s loss on Friday was to Wahoo Bishop Neumann in Nebraska. Defending Back-to-Back Class C-1 Champions.

We played GVC Friday night and play Don Bosco Thursday, so I can hopefully compare.

I do think GVC is slightly down from last year, though they might be better by the end of the season considering the upgrade in the schedule. We are definitely better, which would explain more accurately the difference in scores (losing by 47 last year, 22 this year). That said, I haven't seen any other top teams, so seeing DB on Thursday will shed a bit of light.

And hey, as a bonus, we get GVC again right after New Years.

Your assessment seems fair, and is in-line with what I see as well.

I can't put my finger on it, but at this point in the season, there seems to be some holes. While their D is still good, it's not quite to the level as last year. Doesn't seem as potent. Might be a slight lack of quickness? There is a lack of good D inside the paint as well.

However, the overall athleticism is definitely still there.

That isn't a knock on GVC. Still a top 5 team, but would hesitate to have them #1 at this point. That could all change when two transfers come in next semester.

SSG T and mylameusername, you both make good points. The only thing I would add is GVC is learning that when you are the state champs, everyone gets up to play you and gives you their best game. You can't take a night off or a half off (and sometimes they have coasted a bit in the second half). But even having said that, again your assessments are fair.

Final Don Bosco 59, Baxter 50

Hey SSG T - Not factoring in the scores of the games... mind giving a break-down of Don Bosco as compared to GVC? Since they both played a similar opponent (and I know nothing about Don Bosco), I'm curious to hear someone's comparison of the two teams.

Don Bosco is very technical, well coached team. They make very few mistakes, are crisp with their passing and a good shooting team. I don't know if it was based on the opponent, us, but they don't provide much pressure D, they play solid defense, just kind of waiting for a mistake. Based on what I saw, though, I didn't think they're as good as GVC.

GVC is far better defensively and attack more on offense. The only offensive player I'd give an edge to for DB is Nie, that kid can flat out shoot. The styles definitely contrast, DB plays slower than GVC. GVC forces mistakes, DB waits for them. They both make you pay for mistakes, GVC makes you pay immediately, they run every chance they have, even if it's not there.

I do think DB makes fewer mistakes than GVC, but GVC makes up for it by forcing more. DB is just more safe on both ends, solid, but safe. I'd also give GVC a big edge athletically, Nyaw and DeMeu would be tough for DB to match up with athletically. Lindemoen and Damman didn't have much of a problem getting in the lane or down the baseline against DB, but they got there and didn't always make good decisions. Those two from GVC are quicker and more aggressive than Cole and T.

I thought we played far better against GVC than last night, and we got beat by 22 against GVC and 9 last night. Our bigs both had good nights against Don Bosco. Clapper had 24 and Aker had 14 (I think). Our guards had a lot of open looks but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Honestly, if played last night the way we played against GVC, we win. Defensively, we were fine, shooting and rebounding (surprisingly) were bad.

I do think it would be a close game with DB and GVC. DB's guards are good enough that I don't think GVC's pressure would affect them as much. I also think DB would make more mistakes than they're used to, but not as many as GVC is used to forcing. And I do think GVC could stay in Nie's shorts better than we did.

One advantage DB would have, they don't commit a lot of fouls. They wouldn't put GVC on the line much. I'd think DB would get to the line a lot against GVC. That would be bad, DB can shoot FT...stupidly good. I think they're over 80% on the year. If they went to the line a lot, they stay in the game and in a tight game, it could be the difference.

If they played, I'd probably pick GVC by 8-10, probably in a lower scoring game than they're used to. I could see something like 68-60, or that range.

Great break-down SSG T. Thanks for putting it together.

DB sounds a lot like Remsen. More deliberate in style, solid D and fundamentals. Make teams work for points, possessions are at a premium.

GVC does seem to be called for a good deal of fouls. If they happened to meet up and it became a FT fest, it would benefit DB.
