Week 9 Games

In week 9 there’s going to be games that decide who wins their district and games that decide who will get an at-large bid for the postseason.

D1: Western Christian @ West Lyon
* A win by Western clinches the district and gives them home field through the quarterfinals. A win by West Lyon forces a three-way tie for the district in which I believe West Sioux would have the higher RPI of the three and make them champs. Should be a great game.

D3: Aplington-Parkersburg @ Osage
* A win by Osage gives them the district title outright. A win by AP forces a three-way tie between these two and Denver. Denver however won’t catch either of them in the RPI. AP right now has a higher RPI than Osage. Essentially the winner of this game will be a district champ.

D5: Mediapolis @ Sigourney-Keota
*This is the game that both teams have had circled all season. I think there’s been a lot of anticipation from us on here for this game, too. Mepo wins and they’re in as district champs. Right now they’re 18 in RPI as the new ranks have yet to come out. A loss and they don’t qualify. SK wins district with a win obviously. With a loss it gets a bit tricky. As of now, they’re 14 in the RPI. A solid win over RPI 24 Wapello might boost them up a bit to be able to endure a loss in week 9 if that happens.

D6: Regina @ Dike-New Hartford
*It’s no secret that the district was coming down to this game just like last year. Both teams are in regardless of what happens, but each wants to stake claim to being a district champ. Whoever loses will be a tough out in the postseason and will be an extremely tough matchup for whoever hosts them in the first round.

D6: South Hardin @ North Linn
*SH is coming off a big home loss to DNH. NL took care of East Marshall. Having this game at home is a huge boost for the Lynx as they’re looking to be one of the last teams in the at-large pool. With a win, I’m not sure SH will have enough to make it, but we’ll see where they’ll fall in the latest RPI rankings.

D8: Mount Ayr @ ACGC
*This could be a game with an at-large spot. Mount Ayr played tough against VM but the talent and depth of VM won late in the game. ACGC got dominated at home by Panorama. Can they regroup against Mount Ayr? It’s nice to be at home again with this game being as big as it is. We will see how far ACGC falls in the new RPI after the significant loss on Friday. Mount Ayr is 6th in the RPI, so with a loss, they look in good shape to qualify.

Are there any other games to be aware of in week 9? We’re almost to postseason ball, but first will have some great games to end the regular season.

Taking into account of what I have read thus far; a lot of people seem to think either Mediapolis will dominate SK or vice versa. (Not so much in the middle) How about a tight battle down to the wire? I see SK and Mediapolis's defenses have both forced a big number of turnovers. SK despite a weaker schedule has managed to pile up enough yards to be 2nd in the state (rushing) and Mediapolis also over 2,500 yards rushing. This could be a battle between the 30's and low scoring or... who knows! Fun time of year.

I think it's going to just about take a miracle for the S-K/Mediapolis loser to get in. They're both on the bubble right now, and at least one district champ is going to be outside the top 16 -- which will move the bubble one notch higher.

Not sure where you’re reading Mepo will dominate. I think I’ve only seen one poster say S-K will dominate, but most (not a huge sample size) have picked S-K. It think it’ll be a close game and whichever team minimizes the turnovers and penalties wins.

Regarding Regina/DNH, I've been thinking a lot about this matchup and trying to be really objective about it, despite having a desired outcome. Given the returning cast of characters and performance so far, I would say either team could win this, but DNH has the distinct advantage.

They return a running back who put over 300 yd on Regina last year, and Regina has had its struggles stopping the run this year.

Regina will have to take care of the ball - They gave up 3 interceptions in the game last year.

DNH can be selective with their passing game. Regina hasn't created a lot of interception opportunities this year.

So, key for a Regina upset, taking care of the ball. making some big plays - on defense and offense and maintaining enough of a balanced attack to not allow the DNH secondary the luxury of sitting back and picking off passes.

That's not too much to ask, right? Either way I think this is one of the top 5 games of the year in 1A.

Don't forget the Pella Christian I-35 game is huge too. I-35 is 24th in the RPI and Pella Christian is 25th BCMoore has Pella Christian winning by 2 over I-35

I think I-35 gets it done with their defense and takes the district title.
