How about last week across the state. Who would have guessed all those upsets from teams we wouldn't have expected to get upset (East Mills, Wayne). This week sets up for another big rebound week across the state for those teams as well as other teams looking to get on the right track and contend in their respective districts. Below are my picks as well as a few other highlighted games I feel are worth talking about.

District 1Boyer Valley, Dunlap at Kingsley-Pierson

West Harrison, Mondamin at Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton

St. Mary's, Remsen at Clay Central-Everly
West Bend-Mallard at Harris-Lake Park

District 3Clarksville at North Iowa, Buffalo Center
Northwood-Kensett at Riceville
Rockford at Janesville
Tripoli
at CAL, Latimer

District 4Cedar Valley Christian School at Kee, Lansing
Central, Elkader
at Midland, Wyoming
Springville at Turkey Valley, Jackson Junction
West Central, Maynard
at Central City

District 5Don Bosco, Gilbertville at English Valleys, North English
Grand View Christian School at H-L-V, Victor
Meskwaki Settlement School
at Dunkerton
Tri-County, Thornburg at Colo-Nesco

District 6Harmony, Farmington at Moravia
Melcher-Dallas at Seymour
Mormon Trail, Garden Grove at Lamoni
Twin Cedars, Bussey
at Wayne, Corydon

District 7Ankeny Christian Academy at East Union, Afton
Glidden-Ralston
at Guthrie Center

Northeast Hamilton, Blairsburg at Coon Rapids-Bayard

District 8East Mills at Fremont-Mills, Tabor
Nishnabotna at Lenox
Sidney at CAM, Anita
Stanton at Essex

Game of the week: East Mills @ Fremont Mills
Even with East Mills losing last week to Stanton, this game still is the game of the week in my opinion. It is the first real test for Fremont Mills in trying to earn that #1 ranking. East Mills has to be hungry after getting caught looking ahead to this week in the battle for what I still feel are the two best teams in District 8. Spencer Phillips looks to power his team to a win and seperate the Knights from the rest of the pack in the district moving forward. I see East Mills rebounding nicely and keeping this a very close game until the second half where the big physical play of Fremont Mills wears them down. Fremont Mills by 10.

Upset of the week: Twin Cedars, Bussey @ Wayne, Corydon
A lot of people weren't sold on Wayne to start the year and last week they proved why falling unexpectedly to Mormon Trail. Twin Cedars is coming off a win against Seymour and is looking to add to their district record by knocking off Wayne which I feel they will do. I think Wayne will still be down after their loss last week and the hangover will carry to this Friday where they will get tripped up yet again at home. Again this game will be close but I think a late turnover in the second half will be the difference. Twin Cedars with the upset.

Game to keep and eye on: Glidden-Ralston @ Guthrie Center
With Coon Rapids slowly but surely flexing their muscles at the top, both teams are in need of a big time win to keep pace, or in Guthrie Center's case, to catch up. Glidden is always a well coached fundamentally sound team that seems to reload every year and contend for a district title. Guthrie is looking to get a big time win and get in line for the #2 spot in that very tough district. Winner of this game IMO claims, at worst, the #2 spot in the district so it is a big game for both teams. Glidden I feel though will have their power run game running on all 8 cylindars and pull away in the second half, setting up what could be a week 7 matchup with Coon Rapids to settle who will get the #1 spot in D7. Definitely keep an eye on this one though.

Does Mormon Trail have a shot at beating Lamoni? Can anyone shed light on the Trail and Wayne game? I thought Wayne was picked to win this district.

Mormon Trail is a lot more improved then they have been over the years this year. They beat my Mustangs in week 1 34-0. First time they've beat Murray in a long time! I actually have them winning district 6 this year and finishing 8-1. Only teams I could see beating them are Lamoni or Melcher. Lamoni lost a lot from last year so I'm not sure how they are with the weak competition they have played so far this year. Gonna be a good game! I'll pick Mormon Trail-40 Lamoni-32

How about the Stanton Vikings as well? Who would have ever thought they would have beat East Mills last week? They had a couple tough games to start the year against Lamoni and Guthrie Center but must have rebounded nicely and found their stride the last couple weeks rolling CAM by almost 70 then the big upset against East Mills where I had heard from a few people that Stanton was up 36-0 at one point in the first half or at halftime. Can anyone shed some light on that game at all if thats true or not? Stanton may be the dark horse team nobody seen coming this year, Especially if East Mills finds a way to beat Fremont Mills on Friday.

Stanton put a whoopin on EM the first half plain n simple!! Questionable n predictable play calling by EM and questionable "effort" the first half too!! The 2nd half was called how I thought EM would play all year. We'll see how they respond against FM which is gunna show a LOT!!

Let's remember that Wayne had 1400 lbs of humanity sitting on the sidelines not dressed from injuries. Lamoni will be more than Mormon trail can handle.

Wayne was missing several key players along both lines, including Tate Van Dyne, who is easily their best lineman. Without those guys, Mormon Trail owned the line of scrimmage and kept Wayne's offense in check (for the most part). Kiefer nearly brought Wayne back, but Trail started just kicking the ball out of bounds on all their kickoffs after he took one back for a score.

If those guys are good to go (especially Van Dyne), then Wayne should definitely still stand a good chance of winning the district. It's also worth noting that Wayne has lost just one home game since dropping down to 8-man in 2012.
