Here are my week 2 top 10 rankings:

1. Pella Christian
2. Dike-New Hartford
3. West Branch
4. Iowa City Regina
5. West Sioux
6. Bellevue
7. Cascade
8. Aplington-Parkersburg
9. West Lyon
10. Wilton

Outside looking in: Van Meter, Western Christian, South Central Calhoun, Mediapolis

Thoughts?

I still think everyone is giving West Branch too much credit. They have a good QB and RB, but their Oline is suspect without Barnwart and Freese. I saw some of their first game film. Their offense played terribly. The defense was very good, though. They might be good by Week 9. If they run the table then they are a top 5 team. If anyone runs the table in that district they are a legitimate title contender.

WB is probably closer to 10 than third. The Des Moines paper may have them pegged correctly.

I think Wilton is too high. I'd put Mepo ahead of them for sure. I agree with you on WB. Good RB and QB, suspect line. I tend to side with tradition. Tradition never graduates. I may show more favor for West Lyon and Western Christian and downgrade Cascade and Bellevue.

I agree with you on everything, but I like South Central Calhoun instead of MEPO.

I agree with your top 2. I see WB, Regina and Bellevue as the next 3 in no particular order yet. With West Sioux stepping up, I'm not sure where they sit. Being in the east, it's hard to get as much information (even scores on game night. Does western Iowa not have twitter? ;-) )

I feel like Cascade should be at the bottom of the rankings right now, not sure Wilton or AP even belong on there. I guess this week will be telling for AP. Wilton we may not really know until playoffs.

We'll know a lot more about Van Meter this week.

Mediapolis sure put up a lot of points last week.

I live just a little ways on the western half of the state, so I can provide some insight on the teams from the west.

Game night tomorrow.

How about some discussion of the matchups?

I took the 4 published rankings (no offense @Charles86) and generated the consensus amongst them:

1 PC
2 Cascade
3 Regina
4 AP
5 WB
6 DNH
7 West Lyon
8 Van Meter
9 West Sioux
10 South Central Calhoun
11 Bellevue
12 Wilton
13 Western Christian

So, here is my take on tomorrow's matchups -

If PC wins over Van Meter, it solidifies their top ranking. If Van Meter pulls off the upset it catapults them up to at least 5, maybe as high as 3 depending on other win/loss

Cascade needs a commanding win against Benton Comm to make this one count for much.

Same for Regina at Anamosa - A loss for the Regals would drop them completely out of any rankings.

AP @DNH - Both teams need this, and I believe it's a rivalry game - A big win for DNH solidifies their position (number 1 in one poll, 6 and 9 in two others and not even ranked in the 4th) A big win could make them a respected #2. If PC loses and DNH wins big - look out for the battle to claim number 1. - AP needs the win if they want to remain ranked after a weak win last week. A loss, might leave them clinging to the bottom of the ranking.

WB @Wapello - Should be a cake walk for the Bears - Big win and they stay where they are - a loss and they drop significantly.

West Lyon vs Sioux Center - A ranked 2A opponent - a win should bump them up a little, a loss wouldn't cause much harm.

West Sioux vs Central Lyon - West Sioux needs this win to prove they can compete in 1A. A loss might drop them out.

South Central Calhoun @Kuemper - A win against the ranked 2A opponent would give them a boost as they are essentially an honorable mention in most rankings right now. A loss wouldn't carry too much negative impact.

Wilton - with not too many believers, had a good rivalry game win last week, that ranking voices probably wanted to see be bigger (they dropped in the polls they were even in. They need to step up with a big win against NE Goose Lake if they want recognition as a 1A contender.

Bellevue vs. Camanche - Camanche had a solid win against a 1A last week. Bellevue, who is middle of the pool on 2 and non-existent on the others, needs this win (and probably a strong win) to establish some credibility. A loss wouldn't do much harm, other than drop them down a little and keep them from emerging on the others.

Western Christian - A Win against BHRV would bring them running into the conversation for this year - A team that has a big roster, with big kids and strong coaching would command attention with a win - A big win might move them as high as 4 or 5!

Comments? other factors? What about other teams you think deserve attention but aren't getting it?

No offense taken at all. I love the insight! Looks like weather will once again be impacting games tomorrow night. May work in favor of some teams. Some games might be moved up earlier, or moved to Saturday? I guess we will have to wait and see. I think week 2 will provide us with a bit more insight into the top 10 in 1A.

The NW corner always has quality teams.

BHRV is loaded this year and should be one of the favorites in their class. Their numbers are crazy and have athletes all over the field.

Sioux Center will be a very solid 2A team. Solid at the skill positions and good coaching staff. JH numbers are really dropping off though.

West Sioux has a very talented and experienced group. I was very surprised by their score against BHRV. Makes me wonder how much they will miss Lynott. They my have the best QB in 1A.

Western lost some of their skill players from last year but always seem to find athletes. They will have size and talent, they just need to add experience.

West Lyon may have lost more than any team in the state. They looked like a young team last week, but also showed many glimpses of a very talented group. If these guys buy in and get stronger throughout the year, like West Lyon teams of the past, they could be very solid.

Wilton beat NE Goose Lake 50-8 tonight.

Thanks for the report - you beat the state site with the scoring update.

Well, that sounds like stepping up pretty big.

I usually hate to see such runaway scoring, but I wasn't there, I'm guessing Wilton did everything they could to be sporting while trying to make a statement that they belong in the rankings as well as prove to their kids that they are each individually capable of great things.

Good win for the Beavers.
