The following games are ones that I think will provide some good battles and provide a bit more insight into some of the top teams in 1A in week 2
BHRV @ Western Christian: Arguably the top team in 2A, BHRV should be able to take care of business here, but these schools are so close on location and kids are so familiar with each other that Western could keep it close for a half.
Central Lyon @ West Sioux: Central Lyon lost a battle against West Lyon in week 1, while West Sioux got roughed up by BHRV. Athletes will be plenty in this game, but West Sioux has a few more and knows what it takes to get the job done in this one.
Sioux Center @ West Lyon: SC took care of LeMars in week 1 with some good play from their qb, while West Lyon won the beef bowl over Central Lyon. West Lyon replaces essentially most of their varsity lineup and those kids will keep gaining confidence every week. However, I think SC goes on the road and gets this game won with some key plays in the second half.
Northeast, Goose Lake @ Wilton: NE has some nice athletes back this year and could provide Wilton with a decent test in week 2. Wilton got a 27-13 week 1 win, although maybe it should have been more? Maybe someone could provide more insight. I expect Wilton to get after it on defense and to capitalize on turnovers to put up plenty of points.
Pella Christian @ Van Meter: Treimer looks like the real deal for PC as he had his way with Oskaloosa in week 1. He reminds me of Jake Lynott the do it all rb from West Sioux last year. PC will put up crazy points all year long. Van Meter surprised me with the final score of their game vs Earlham. Looks like they have a capable back to fill the spot of Rhodes. This could be the best game in week 2 in 1A. Even though Regina looms in week 3, I think PC will have too much fire power for Van Meter. At Van Meter in week 2 and at Regina in week 3 is no easy task, but I expect PC to take victory in week 2 before setting sights on Regina.
Aplington-Parkersburg @ Dike-New Hartford: One of the top rivalries in the state, but wasn’t much of a contest a year ago as the Falcons had their way with the Wolverines. AP got a hard earned 13-12 win on the road over New Hampton and withstood a lengthy weather delay to do so. AP has gone aerial more now than in the past, but remain a ground and pound team first and foremost. DNH did all their scoring in the first quarter in a 21-0 win over Denver. This game was called at half due to weather. DNH has a wealth of experience and talent all over the field and size up front to go with it. Both of these teams will be geared up for this contest, as they could potentially meet down the road in the playoffs. Home field advantage can be thrown out the window when these two meet. I consider it a pickem because of the rivalry.
I left West Branch, Regina, Bellevue and some others off with their games, because I expect those teams to roll and not have much of a game this week. Any thoughts on other games or thoughts on the games I talked about? It’s great to have the season underway!
