The game should be battle .. Two physical teams that both pass and run the football .. The leading rusher for Carlisile suffered an injury in the opening round. Washington defeated Carlisle last year in a first round playoff matchup.

Prediction: Washington ove Carlisle in a tight one 21-20

Carlisle lost top rusher but next man in. that back rushed for over 100 yards and a TD. I take Carlisle 28-14

Carlisle will need to present a broader run/pass mix to win this game. Washington likes to stack the box and clog up the middle. I would like Carlisle's chances better on their home turf, as they are pretty quick on team pursuit, too. If KC is out that will make a difference. I know "next man in" but KC has brought a lot of talent and experience/leadership to the table that will be hard to replace.

Interesting.....I don't want to see anyone get hurt....but kind of interesting that a guy gets injured when he's the type that never leaves the field. Isn't he a stud on offense, defense and even return kicks?

No doubt that leaves Carlisle in a hole.

Realistically, no 3A school should be playing a guy that much. Then again, maybe that just speaks for the depth on their team.

On a side note....I'd actually like to see Carlisle win the game.

Solon - Kramer. RB, MLB, KR, PR; Childs QB S K; Ham SB\RB, DB, KR; Nunemaker SB, DB, LS, KO, KOR, PR...Not to mention all the other players that go both ways pretty much all game. Solon is the smallest 3A school (310 BEDS) vs Newton or West Dub with 600+ BEDS.

Some teams just don't have the depth and have to play guys both ways, including KO, KOR, P and PR along with their O and D they play.

Looks like Washington has had a back (Jacob Hennigan) step up big time the last 3 games with over 700 yds rushing in them games to take the pressure off Sebelius
I've not seen them play but on paper the Offense for Washington Iook's very good and balance going in to the game.

It's easier to take your best players and leave them on the field than it is to develop greater skills in more kids and help take the load off the couple "studs" most 3A teams are going to have.

Class A, 1A and even sometimes 2A have to deal with low numbers which often requires a lot of 2 ways but even then it should be done smart and every option should be used to get those kids off the field as much as possible. Unless a history of excessive 2 waying has killed participation for a 3A school at that level it is more about a coaches philosophy of keeping the absolute best kid on the field at all times and accepting a gamble they won't get hurt.

Too often the coach gets cut both ways with the double edge sword of excessive 2 waying when he suddenly loses his "stud" who basically never leaves the field and plays O, D, and special teams plus he has no one with suitable experience to replace him in those multiple positions. Now he really has few options. Sometimes this can be a domino effect with other players getting injured due to the under experienced players being unable to effectively play the positions they weren't properly developed to play.

Carlisle has a history of playing few players and leaving their best athletes on the field too much. They also have a history of losing key players to injury. This might be a carry over of their days prior to them being a 3A school but they are now in a position they do have the numbers to avoid this situation.

Good programs will use their best guys in multiple roles... but they are smart about it and do it sparingly.

This is a good post, ghost. I think you nailed it. I agree that it is most essentially a "coaching philosophy" to put ALL your best kids in EVERY position pretty much ALL the time. Nothing wrong with it, but it does limit "next man in" type of emotional strength of team and often ultimately defines the season success/season ending.

The same principle is at play on these coaches who run one kid 30 times a game, game after game. I'll look at stat lines in run-a-way games and marvel that the "stud" still carried the ball 30 times in a 50 point beat-down. As the season progresses, "somehow" he's not as effective or gets hurt down the stretch.

That being said, Carlisle has done a good job this year having/using several good offensive players and spread out the carries. None of their skill players are big-bodied kids.

The problem Norse is that too often when it is time that the coach "needs" the next man in. They:

1. Are not still with the program so he has to go with his best available.

2. There is too big of a drop off in the next man due to lack of field experience due to excessive play by a few.

A close friend of mine has a son who was stuck on the 2 deep his junior year behind a fellow junior 2 way. He did what the coaches asked of him, was always ready to go, and made the most of the limited opportunities when he got them. He also let the coach know that he needed more playtime. He wasn't getting what he needed particularly when several blowouts were experienced and instead of quality minutes and series he only got individual plays. The coaches response was always the same. "I've got to let the starters have the work BUT I will get you in more". It never happened.

Senior year rolls around. Even though this player worked hard in the off season right up to 2 a days, he had no intention in participating in football. The coach pleaded with him when he finally realized he was going to be short this player who was going to be needed his senior year. The coach promised him he had planned on starting him in another position and he would still be the backup behind the kid he was behind his junior year. He even apologized to the player and told him he was wrong about not helping him get what he needed his junior year. It made no difference. The coach contacted the parents and was told by the father just what his opinion was of the coaches "philosophy". The coach struck out with the parents.

My friends son ran cross country that fall and was ready to jump into wrestling. (He is now an adult and runs every day....thanks to CC).
