Why would Turkey Valley move down to 8-man? I realize declining enrollment probably contributed to it, but they still average roughly 35-40 kids per grade in the high school....which doesn't make them really small for a Class A school.

They are also historically a very good football school and finished 7-4 on the season last year, so it's not like they haven't been competitive.

With that, they are now one of the biggest 8 Man schools in the state and are dominating. Not surprising.

Me personally, I think they should have stayed in Class A.

I wouldn't consider any of the teams they have beat good. They were all mediocre teams and they won by an average of 38.5 points per game. Turkey Valley is definetly not a bad team but they have no one to compare to due to there bad competition. Central Elakder, in the same District, has been beating teams by an average of 63 points. They have not played any competition yet either but they however are what I would say "Dominating." Even if the teams are bad at least there scoring a lot proving that there only that much better. Next Friday, Oct. 3, we will see who the real 8-man contender is when Turkey Valley is @Central Elkader. Who will win?

Turkey Valley's BEDS are 113 if I remember correctly and they have a fairly large senior class (50 plus) but after that class size averages out to 30-35. I am sure it was not an easy decision. As for competition played that is kind of hard to get a read on to be honest. Kee High is 3-1, against some less than great competition, some folks feel like West Central was going to be better and predicted them to handle Turkey last Friday. I was at the game, I do not know who went out for the game for West Central. I do know Steinbrohn limped off at the end of the first half. He played quarterback the second half but no defense from what I saw. As to the other injuries for West Central, not sure who. Turkey played the last three minutes of the first half and the entire second half with their backup sophomore quarterback. West Central looked good for a quarter and a half and then kind of fell apart. Rockford is not real great this year. Riceville is puzzling. They really do have some big athletic players that can move and two good, hard running backs and play physical. They played Turkey very well the first quarter but then got out of character and Turkey was able to get things rolling. Turkey plays Springville this week. Not sure if the older Blake will be able to play. Sounds like they are missing him quite a bit. Central/Turkey game will be a big test for both teams. I am personally not one to put a lot of credence into how many points team do or do not score. It is hard to tell your backup kids to take a knee, They are excited to play in a varsity game and want to show what they have worked so hard for.

The classes coming up are starting to get very small at TV. It starts with this year's junior class. There are only 5 or 6 boys in the entire class, only 2 out for football.

You are spot on. The other three grades have decent numbers as does their Jr High but not like they have 50 kids out for football.

I think TV would have liked to stay in 11 man so they could keep rivalry games with schools like South Winn, Sumner Fred, and North Fayette Valley but they have been shrinking steadily along with many other smaller schools in that area of the state.

In 2007 Sumner Fred graduated 97 kids in its senior class and they are down to 40-50 kids per grade or less.
North Fayette was the same size or bigger than SF and they dropped to 1A before picking up the Valley Community students and moving back up to 2A.
Denver and Tripoli joined for wrestling and I wouldn't be surprised if other sports follow suit soon.
West Central I believe has considered joining with neighboring schools as well.
Central Elkader and Clayton Ridge have joined for certain sports.

That area is going to have a lot of travel across the state unless it sees some sort of youthful population spike.

The northeast corner of the state is in the same boat as the rest of the vast swaths of rural Iowa. Aging population, younger families moving to metro area in search of jobs, graduates not returning after college. 8-man will see a revolving door every two years as former 1A/A schools shrink & 8-man school districts consolidate or dissolve.
