End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. With the 2007 football season
in full swing, look for this feature to be posted much more often over the next
few months. With information on football and basketball, this version of
The End Zone is loaded with updates!
Mason City Newman fullback/linebacker Adam Buffington has been on fire
this fall as a senior and has a number of college programs that have already
been showing him attention. Those schools include UNI, Drake, NIACC, and a
number of Division III and II schools. This week Buffington will really
get a chance to prove how talented he as Newman and St. Ansgar, the defending
district champions, do battle in what could end up be a game (Unless Lake Mills
has something to say about it) that could be for the district title.
Sioux
City Heelan was able to avenge their loss from last fall to LeMars. One
player who has been standing out once again for the Crusaders has been running
back Brandon Wegher. This junior has been receiving recruiting
interest from KU, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State, Duke, North Dakota, and
Connecticut. Wegher has already taken a visit to Kansas State recently and
has a number of planned throughout the rest of the fall. They include
trips to Iowa State, Kansas, Iowa, and possibly Nebraska.
One
team that has been disappointed with their 0-3 start to 2007 has been Council
Bluffs Abraham Lincoln. But one bright spot for the team is that lineman
Chase Tanner continues to develop. This junior has the size that
college coaches are looking for and has been receiving early interest from Iowa,
Stanford, and Duke. While he didn't come out and say it, the Hawkeyes
appear to be the early favorite and have already sent him tickets for the 2007
football season.
Like Mason City Newman, another team that has been a huge surprise going 3-0
so far in 2007 has been Lawton-Bronson. With All State lineman Cole
Albright back for his final year, it was obvious the team would be good but
not good enough to blowout teams. Speaking of Albright, he said the main
four schools that have been recruiting him have been South Dakota State,
Northwest Missouri State, Nebraska-Omaha, and Wartburg. He was scheduled
to see South Dakota State play recently but car trouble made him cancel the
trip. Albright mentioned he doesn't want to commit until around Signing
Day but don't be shocked to see him add some scholarship offers before now and
then.
After
their week three win over HLV, there is few who will doubt that WACO has the
inside track on the district championship. One of their best players,
running back Chayse Roth, has caught the attention from a lot of college
coaches. This senior has received letters from Illinois, Northwest
Missouri State, Iowa, and UNI. Roth named the Northern Iowa Panthers as
his top school and has received calls this fall from Central and Augustana.
He also mentioned that he is looking mainly at scholarship schools so that could
limit his Division III options.
For the Class of 2009, a good number of the top players in this age group had
a chance to shine as a sophomore. One player who took a different path is
Muscatine athlete Edwin Arceo. This standout has been on fire this
fall and been putting up some impressive numbers. Arceo has already been
receiving interest from Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Duke. He had a
chance to make a visit to Iowa during the late summer for the Elite Day in
August. Arceo also mentioned that both Iowa and Iowa State sent him
tickets this fall to attend games. Growing up, this talented athlete has
been following USC.
Solon
quarterback Matt Morrison saw his role expand this season because of
injuries. Instead of just being behind center, this junior is playing on
both sides of the ball and is now at safety. The thing about Morrison is
that he will likely be a basketball player at the college level. Schools
recruiting him for hoops include UNI, William and Mary, Iowa, and Iowa State.
He didn't name a favorite but mentioned that he would like to take a trip to
UNI.
Another
squad that has started 2007 strong has been Waukee. The Warriors had some
holes to fill but a strong junior class has definitely helped out there.
One player who has had his role expanded this year has been fullback/linebacker
Jake Knott. This standout has seen his recruiting really pickup as
of late. The University of Iowa hosted him for their Elite Junior Day in
August and other schools that have sent mail include Florida State, Vanderbilt,
Virginia, South Dakota State, Kansas State, Winona State, and Southern Miss.
It will be interesting to see how his recruiting plays out over the next year
and a half.
Like
Knott, Mount Pleasant athlete Jordan Cotton had a chance to make the trip
to Iowa City an Elite Junior Day hosted by the University of Iowa. And
after helping his team to an upset win against Keokuk, this standout is really
confident about the rest of the year. The schools that have been
recruiting Cotton hard at this point have been Iowa, Purdue, Iowa State, Duke,
and Wisconsin. He plans to make visits to Iowa and possibly Iowa State
throughout the fall to learn more about both programs. In the end, if the
Hawkeyes offer, the fact that he grew up routing for Iowa will be tough to
overcome from any school.
Muscatine quarterback Jon Phillips has been putting up jaw dropping
numbers this season but it doesn't appear if that has been helping with his
recruiting. Part of it may be the fact that he is unsure if he wants to
play football in college and another part is that people may think he is good
because of the system he is in. Phillips mentioned that he has been
getting interest from Division III schools at this point. If he has
another All State season, one would think more schools would show interest.
Dubuque
Hempstead athlete Josh Lenz has helped his team off to a 2-1 start and
will need another win this week as they face off against undefeated Waterloo
West. His athletic ability is something that is special and he already has
Iowa, Iowa State, South Dakota State, and Duke sending him mail. Lenz was
another one of the many top prospects to visit Iowa in August and he mentioned
that he really enjoyed his time in Iowa City. Like many other in-staters,
Lenz hopes to visit Iowa and Iowa State during the fall.
Going
back to the Class of 2008, West Des Moines Valley defensive end Justin Ewald
has a lot of college potential. Both Iowa and Kansas have been
recruiting this standout athlete. Although he was invited to the
University of Iowa for their Elite Day, he was unable to attend. But since
then, he made one visit to see more about their program and also took the trip
to Iowa City for their game against Syracuse. Both visits were rated very
highly and Ewald grew up a Hawkeye fan.
When talking about Central Lyon, GLR football, the first name that normally
comes to mind is Nate DeJong. But this All Stater is not the only college
prospect on the roster. Keep an eye on athlete Jordan Gacke.
This junior was named All District last fall as a punter but has a lot of
ability at a number of other positions as well. Gacke has heard early from
Wisconsin and Iowa State. If he can help his team to another State title,
look for a lot of schools to keep an eye on him in the off-season.
And
last but not least, Western Dubuque tight end/defensive end Nathan Ramler
has helped his team off to a surprising 3-0 start heading into their game
against Marion. This senior will eventually have to make the decision of
baseball vs. football. On the baseball front, he has Louisville and UNI
recruiting him. Football wise, Iowa, UNI, Kansas, Kansas State, Northern
Illinois, Illinois, and others have been keeping in contact with this standout.
