For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. This edition is the most
loaded in recent memory with some huge recruiting news regarding some of the top
football and basketball players in the Class of 2008. Baseball,
basketball, and football tidbits are stocked throughout this End Zone!
By
far the most interesting news has to do with Bettendorf lineman Adam Coleman.
After turning down the likes of Stanford, Duke, and others, he committed to
Western Illinois in the summer. But now Coleman feels as if he rushed that
decision and is a soft commitment. What that means is that while he is
committed to the Leathernecks, he will be taking visits to other schools and
checking out other programs. Since committing, Coleman has added offers
from Illinois State and Air Force. He has also made visits this fall to
Iowa State, Northern Illinois, and Western Illinois. When asked about
other visits, Coleman mentioned that he had started to look into setting up
official visits and sounded as if he would like to take all five. Schools
he mentioned included Buffalo, Air Force, Northern Illinois, and Western
Illinois. As far as the fifth goes, he is considering Wyoming or a school
along those lines.
Des
Moines Lincoln linebacker L.J. Gamblin and his teammates are one win away
against Newton to make it back to the playoffs for their third straight year.
But while his own season is keeping him busy, Gamblin continues to have a lot of
college interest. He continues to hold an offer from Northern Iowa but
also has interest from Oklahoma State, Kansas University, Iowa, and Iowa State.
Each and every one of those schools has called him this fall so that means he is
a serious priority for these players. Gamblin is in the process of getting
senior tape out and that could help him add to his scholarship total.
Northeast
Hamilton defensive end Jordan Anderson has not lost a high school in
quite sometime and it appears college coaches are really starting to take notice
of this athletic 8-Man player. He has been hearing from UNI, South Dakota
State, and Waldorf but the school that has really picked it up as of late has
been Iowa State. Anderson took a visit to Ames on Saturday for their game
against Oklahoma and has been receiving calls from the Cyclone coaches.
While there are no offers on the table for this talented senior, winning another
State title would definitely not hurt his resume.
Clear
Lake defensive lineman Jared Sholly may be the only player in the State
that has fifteen sacks and yet is still not happy with his performance this
year. That is really saying a lot about his personality. Sholly has
taken visits this fall to Iowa, Iowa State, South Dakota State, and St. Cloud
State. Sholly does not hold any offers either but is still in the process
of getting his senior tape out to college coaches. If that video is
anything like his impressive junior tape, don't be surprised to see some major
schools take a chance with Sholly by extending him an offer.
West
Lyon running back Chris Tracy is among those athletes that have seen his
phone ring off the hook with the interest from college coaches. The
programs that have called him include North Dakota State, South Dakota State,
UNI, Iowa State, Augustana, North Dakota, Northwestern Missouri State, and
Truman State. Tracy has taken visits to UNI when they played Southern
Illinois and Iowa State this past weekend when they played Oklahoma. When
asked about a favorite visit, this potential All Stater mentioned that he really
enjoyed his time in Ames watching the Cyclones in action.
Pella
has been a big surprise on the football field this fall and a lot of that has to
do with the play of running back Chip Phillips. This standout
fought through an injury during most of his junior year but has been healthy as
a senior. When looking at stats, his improvement while healthy is
definitely reflected. Phillips has been receiving interest from schools at
all levels but mentioned some of the main ones as Missouri Southern, Northwest
Missouri, Truman State, and South Dakota. He hopes to get a chance to play
Division II football because that would allow him to get on the field.
Bettendorf
wide receiver Billy Rembold has been stepping up as a main target for the
Bulldogs this fall. He has played a main role in why the team is sitting
at 8-0 and have clinched at least a tie for the MAC title. Rembold has
been receiving recruiting interest from Western Illinoi, UNI, Iowa State, North
Dakota State, South Dakota State, Illinois State, Missouri State, Eastern
Illinois, and Eastern Michigan. While there are no offers on the table, a
number of these programs have been calling him. Look for this senior to
showcase his skills during the upcoming playoff season.
Cherokee
quarterback Tyler Jones just became the passing yardage leader in Iowa on
Friday night and has another year to break other quarterback records. This
talented junior has been receiving early recruiting interest from Iowa, Iowa
State, and Northern. But will these coaches think that his stats are
inflated because of the system at Cherokee? Time will tell in that matter
but this standout can really throw the ball. Growing up, his entire family
routed for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Jones did the same but mentioned that he
would love the opportunity to play at any of the three schools during his
upcoming college days.
Another top player in the Class of 2009, Muscatine athlete Edwin Arceo
and his teammates will be hoping to finish the regular season at 8-1 if they can
beat Davenport Assumption on Thursday night. This juniors ability to play
a number of positions on the field as well as kick has continued to catch the
eye of college coaches. Arceo mentioned that schools recruiting him
include Duke, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and others. He had a chance to
visit Iowa City for their win a few weeks back against Illinois and will be
making the trek back there later this fall when the Hawks take on Minnesota.
This
was posted last week but Cascade athlete Nate Meyer recently pledged a
commitment to the University of Northern Iowa to play baseball. And
despite being an All Stater on the football field as a junior and likely as a
senior, he is looking forward to playing baseball in college. Meyer had
things narrowed down between UNI and Iowa but the area around Cedar Falls helped
him in the end. He liked the size of the campus as well as the coaching
staff for the Panthers.
While
most of the top basketball players in the Class of 2008 want to have the
recruiting process over before the season, Davenport Central guard E.J. Hicks
is not one of them. This athletic senior holds an offer from Western
Carolina but doesn't plan on making a decision anytime soon. Hicks also
has interest from Northern Iowa, The Citadel, and Montana State. He did
not want to name a favorite when I spoke with him but did mention that he thinks
highly about the Panthers of Northern Iowa. Hicks also said he won't be
taking any official visits anytime soon, unless something changes.
Forest
City combo guard Brett Putz decided to be one of those athletes who sign
in November and he did so when he committed to St. Cloud State. This
senior held an offer from Upper Iowa and Wayne State may have been coming to the
table with a scholarship but had not done so before he committed. Putz was
named All State last year as a junior and could average around thirty points per
game this year. He had an outstanding showing on the AAU circuit and that
helped him get a lot of interest from a variety of college programs.
Other games and visitors includes:
Iowa State vs. Texas:
Adam Coleman - Bettendorf
Garrett Scott - Bettendorf
Adam Robinson - Des Moines Lincoln
L.J. Gamblin - Des Moines Lincoln
Iowa State vs. Oklahoma:
Joe Johnson - WDM Valley
UNI vs. Southern Illinois:
