End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. With this edition, we have one
athlete narrowing down what sport he will play in college, a new Division I
basketball offer, and much more. This version includes football updates
for 2008 and 2009, basketball information, and a baseball tidbit that is very
interesting.
With
the football season really heating up, I think that would be a good place to
start. One athlete who has been putting up some impressive numbers this
fall has been Marshalltown wide receiver Derek Williams. Despite
the 6-1 start for the Bobcats, recruiting has been limited for this standout.
He has been receiving weekly calls from Augustana and took a visit with his
quarterback, Tyler Peschong, earlier this fall. Northern Iowa has
also requested tape this fall but things have not picked up much since the start
of the season. Williams is a great athlete and has some serious skills.
One
player who is flying under the radar and that may have something to do with the
fact that he plays at a small school is Alta athlete Cody Nesbitt.
This senior helped put his team in the driver's seat for the district title and
has a lot of college coaches interested. They include South Dakota, South
Dakota State, Morningside, Northwestern, Briar Cliff,
Harvard, and Southwest Missouri State. Nesbitt visited South Dakota last
spring and took a trip to South Dakota State a few weeks back. He
currently doesn't have any offers but continues to impress coaches with his
ability.
While
Alta may not be the biggest school in Iowa, one of the smallest is Ventura.
And despite that size, they have been doing some great things on the football
field and are off to a 7-0 start. One player who has had a lot to do with
that success is senior Josh Henely. This talented athlete has
already rushed for over 1,200 yards and eventually will get a showdown for the
district title in week nine with Northeast Hamilton. Henely has a variety
of Division III and NAIA schools after him and mentioned that he is in the works
of setting up visits to Wartburg and Waldorf.
Moving
back up to bigger schools, Hampton-Dumont is still undefeated during the regular
season while playing Class 2A football. A big part of that success is due
to the ability of Ross Shafrath, son of the head coach. This
talented senior and his teammates are likely playing for the district title this
week with Roland Story on the schedule. Both squads are 5-0 in district
play and have a huge match up coming. Shafrath has received calls this
fall from St. Cloud, South Dakota State, and UNI. He has also made visits
to Iowa State, St. Cloud State, and was one of the recruits in attendance at
Northern Iowa's big win this weekend. Shafrath enjoyed the atmosphere in
Cedar Falls as well as other Panther fans in attendance.
Before
moving to Class 4A, one quick update from the Class 3A ranks. Oskaloosa
athlete Steven Staggs may not be able to get his team into the postseason
this fall but he has been shining individually. He continues to hold an
offer from West Point and will be taking an official visit there on November
17th. Staggs has also had a chance to visit Purdue, Iowa, and Iowa State
for games throughout the fall. His recruiting will be an interesting case
to follow as he gets senior tape out to college coaches looking to offer this
athletic receiver.
Davenport
Assumption athlete Willie Argo had the opportunity to play either
football or baseball in college but decided to narrow down his sport preference.
And despite an early offer from Wyoming, this senior will be taking the baseball
route for college. Argo currently holds a scholarship from Northern Iowa
and a host of schools throughout the nation are after him as well. He
mentioned that he plans to go down to Florida for a showcase in November that
really could help his baseball recruiting stock. Because Argo is so
talented in football, baseball, and wrestling, he has little time to get to
those showcases.
Staying
in the MAC conference, Bettendorf tight end Mitch Overstreet will be one
of the most recruited players in the Class of 2009 when all is said and done.
He had a chance to visit the University of Iowa this past weekend for their win
over Illinois. However, the Hawkeyes are not the only school recruiting
him. Overstreet has received interest from Iowa State, Kansas,
Northwestern, and a host of other schools. While he may not be putting up
big numbers this fall, his ability on the field is obvious.
Another
player to keep an eye on in the junior class is Cedar Rapids Washington
quarterback Wyatt Suess. With the top overall player in the Class
of 2009 to throw to in Keenan Davis, the Warriors have a very potent
connection to watch over the next year and a half. Suess visited Iowa for
their Junior Day in August and has also been hearing from Duke and Stanford.
With quarterbacking in his blood, the youngest Suess has a chance to play
college football at a very high level.
Southern
Cal running back/linebacker Kelan Richardson is only a junior and has
already been a three year starter for the Mustangs. That ability is why
college coaches are keeping a close eye on him. Richardson had a chance to
make a visit to Iowa State early in the fall when they played Iowa and has also
been invited to games at South Dakota State and Duke. Other schools that
have been sending this talented athlete mail include Louisville and Wisconsin.
Richardson and his teammates have a big week nine game against South Hamilton to
keep an eye on.
And
before I finish up this article, there are a few tidbits on the basketball
court. With Division III hoops getting underway today, how could I leave
basketball out of this. One note that I posted yesterday was that Nashua
Plainfield forward Lee Parker recently ended the recruiting process by
committing to Upper Iowa. It is obvious that the staff there wants to keep
some of the best Iowans in state for their college career. The Peacocks do
have other offers on the table and it will be interesting to see who else they
can land before the November signing period.
Probably
one of the most interesting tidbits that I have not posted yet involves
basketball. Ames wing guard Jesse Pritchard is among the best
basketball players in the Class of 2009 and received an early offer from South
Dakota. Well, now he has two offers with William and Mary jumping into the
fray. That is the same school that offered his teammate, Jordan Burgason,
during the summer. Pritchard also made a visit to North Dakota State over
the weekend but left without an offer. It appears as if they plan to
continue evaluating him throughout the recruiting process. Pritchard also
mentioned he will wait until after next summer to make a decision.
And
last but not least, one player who has really made some big strides over the
past year has been East Sac County forward Tyler Lange. While this
junior will have to adjust to two basketball programs merging, look for him to
have a breakout season. Lange has received early interest from Upper Iowa,
Morehead State, and Minnesota State. But if he continues to improve, look
for that list to grow much larger.
