For those of you who are not familiar with The End
Zone, this information is only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers
and mainly focuses on recruiting in both football and basketball. This
current issue focuses mainly on the Class of 2007 and where a number of players
are looking to continue their football careers. It includes a number of
athletes looking at the Division II and II ranks. Remember what is said in The End Zone,
STAYS IN THE END ZONE!
As
posted on the Off the Record forum yesterday and included in a recent article
today, one of the biggest recruiting shockers of the Class of 2007 has Grinnell
defensive end/tight end Will Eilert changing his commitment from Iowa
State to Northern Iowa. There are obviously a number of question marks
surrounding the situation. Did the new Iowa State coaching staff want to
keep Eilert in the fold or move on to bring in another Junior College player?
Obviously by telling him he was moving to a position he had never played before
was tough for him and saying that a grey shirt possibility was even harder.
We will never know the complete answers to those questions but Eilert is very
happy to be a Panther. He joins a stacked class of Iowans making their way
to Cedar Falls. Don't be shocked to see Clinton defensive lineman Ben
Boothby become in-stater #10 to join the Panthers.
And
just for reference, here is the best definition I found for grey shirt: It
is when a player walks on, without a scholarship, and sits out the first year of
his enrollment. After he finishes his first year, he is then offered a
scholarship for the remaining years at his school, and is eligible to play.
Guthrie Center athlete Andrew Meier was one of the few talented football
players in Iowa to be named Elite All State this past year. While playing
six different positions, he stood out in a number of ways and is just a
versatile player. As far as recruiting goes for Meier, he will be taking
official visits over the next three weeks to South Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, and
St. Cloud State. Central College and Buena Vista are in the running but
could have a tough time landing him if he receives a scholarship or three while
he is on his official visits.
Another
one of the top players in Iowa is MFL-Mar/Mac lineman Brian Rodas.
This bigman from a small school received interest from some large programs early
but it appears he is looking at the Division II level now. Rodas will be
taking an official visit this weekend to Southwest Minnesota State but the
Mustangs are not the only school after him. Other programs include St.
Cloud State, Wayne State, NIACC, Upper Iowa, and the Iowa Conference schools as
well. Because of wrestling, it will be tough for Rodas to make too many
visits before Signing Day 2007.
Maquoketa tight end/linebacker Curtis Roeder was disappointed that his
senior season of football ended with the team below .500 again. But
because of his ability, two colleges are showing him a lot of attention.
He appears to be down to St. Ambrose or Iowa Central. Both schools have
their pluses and minuses.
Two
players that both ended their senior seasons with State titles but appear to be
headed to the Junior College ranks next year are Northeast Hamilton linebacker
Dan Schaa and Cedar Rapids Xavier linebacker Domingo Vega.
Schaa will be visiting both Ellsworth and Iowa Central before the end of the
month. Those visits will help this talented senior make his final
decision. Vega on the other hand was making his visit to Iowa Central on
Sunday and is also considering Ellsworth and NIAAC in the recruiting process.
That could mean these two athletes, one from 4A and one from 8-man, could end up
as teammates at the college level.
And
last but not least for the Class of 2007, Montezuma lineman Lee Schroeder
appears to be down to two schools. The interesting thing about that is one
school is Division I while the other is Division III. Schroeder feels he
could have an opportunity to walk-on at Iowa in hopes of becoming the next great
walk on for the Hawkeyes. But there is also a chance he could end up in
Pella and become a dominant lineman who plays early and often. This could
be one of the most interesting stories for the recruiting Class of 2007 just
because how different each school is.
One quick tidbit on the the current junior class as well. With Harlan
lineman Dan Hoch making a claim for #1 in this class, who could take the
#2 spot? West Des Moines Valley running back Joe Johnson is one
athlete to consider. He recently had a chance to go to San Antonio for the
Junior All American combine and compete with some of the best in the nation.
Johnson came away from the event pleased with his performance in testing.
