End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. With the dead period just
ending, this edition focuses mainly on prospects in the Class of 2009.
From Iowa holding an upcoming Junior Day to where a number of top basketball
prospects are looking, this version is loaded with recruiting tidbits stocked
throughout this End Zone!
First
off, I wanted to talk about the two articles that I posted earlier today.
Muscatine athlete Edwin Arceo is a versatile player because of his
ability to kick and be an athlete at the next level. This senior still has
interest from Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Duke. It will be
interesting to see where this interest leads. The question now is what
type of prospect is he at the college level? Arceo will have to prove to
college coaches he has the leg strength to play at that high of a level during
the summer if he hopes to receive a scholarship. Athlete is still a
possibility but it will not be an easy road.
Pella
Christian point guard Cliff Warner continues to shine as a junior and
really is among the best basketball players in the Class of 2009. There is
little doubt that he is flat out a winner who goes to battle every game he plays
in. It doesn't matter if it is during the regular season, the AAU season,
or an open gym contest. College coaches like that in him so interest
includes South Dakota (Offer), South Dakota State, North Dakota, North Dakota
State, and Illinois State has really picked up interest as of late. When
seeing Warner up close, he may not be the biggest point guard but he has a great
basketball IQ.
Staying
with hoops, another player that has been excelling as a junior has been Waukee
forward Gabe Knutson. This standout has really blown up this winter
and he even mentioned that he was surprised at how well he was playing.
Obviously anytime a player from Martin Bros. really starts the year strong, more
colleges become interested. The three main schools that Knutson mentioned
were Drake, Albany, and Brown. He has made multiple visits to Drake and
mentioned that Urbandale forward Reece Uhlenhopp was on hand with him
during one of the visits. Knutson also saw Albany in action when they
played at Iowa State and Nate Hutcheson and Zach Bohannon of
Linn-Mar also made the trip as well. He currently doesn't have any offers
but there will be a lot of schools keeping a closer eye on him this summer
during the AAU season.
As
I mentioned on the Off the Record forum yesterday, the University of Iowa will
be holding their first Junior Day for the Class of 2009. The Hawkeye
coaching staff has always kept the number of invites small so these are normally
prospects that they are seriously considering in the recruiting process (A note
for those not invited. There have been players in past years who ended up
with an Iowa scholarship that have not been invited to their Junior Days).
Three players have been confirmed that have received invites. They include
Waukee linebacker Jake Knott, Bettendorf tight end Mitch Overstreet,
and West Des Moines Valley tight end Conor Boffeli. There obviously
will be more in-staters who have invites (There is little doubt that Keenan
Davis of Cedar Rapids Washington and Jordan Cotton of Mount Pleasant
will be brought in if it works in their schedule) and I will post any names that
come up.
Speaking
of Overstreet, this standout was honored to receive an invite to this
Junior Day. He has been staying busy since winning a State title with the
Bulldogs by lifting and spending some time on baseball as well. For
football, Overstreet has been hearing from Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, and
Wisconsin. At this point, there are no offers but he is still considering
baseball as an option at the next level as well. Overstreet has baseball
interest from Ole Miss (Where he had hoped to take a visit that probably will
not work out), Illinois-Chicago, Iowa, and Illinois. My guess is that he
is leaning towards playing football at the next level but you never know.
Having the door open for two sports may be good for some but can also turn off
college coaches when rumors persist that a recruit will be playing a different
sport at the college level.
As
for Knott, schools are still after this talented linebacker. Look
for him to be ranked among the top players in the Class of 2009 (I have ranked
the top 50 and it will be out later this week). Anyways, this talented
prospect had a chance to make college visits this fall to Iowa as well as
Michigan State. Knott had a chance to see the Spartans battle Penn State
in a game in which they won. Outside of those two schools, he has been
receiving interest from Boston College, UCLA, Virginia, Colorado, Vanderbilt,
and Iowa State. Knott has shown the skills needed to play at a high level
in college. The question now is which will be the first to offer?
One
quick note on the Class of 2008 as well. With the dead period over the
holiday break ending, recruits will be taking official visits once again this
weekend to a variety of places across the Midwest. One player who has yet
to set up any visits as of yet has been Ankeny linebacker Andrew Foley.
This Elite All State athlete was a force for the Hawks during the fall but has
not been getting as much recruiting interest as one would guess. Foley
currently has interest from Northern Iowa, Iowa, Iowa Central, South Dakota
State, and a variety of Division II schools. At this point, it appears he
is focusing on the Division I-AA or I-A schools to play at. Foley also
mentioned that he is serious about the Junior College option as well.
