End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. This edition focuses on
prospects in the Class of 2008 and 2009 in football and basketball. From
Iowa's first Junior Day to an update on Cedar Rapids Kennedy point guard Kaylon
Williams, this version is loaded with recruiting tidbits stocked throughout The
End Zone!
The
first place to start this edition is regarding the Iowa Junior Day held on
Saturday. While there were a lot of invites extended to some of the top
prep athletes, many had prior sporting commitments and were unable to attend.
The total number of athletes that were able to make it were between ten and
twelve. The event was run by the Hawkeye assistant coaches. Head
coach Kirk Ferentz was in Centerville watching son James wrestle.
He led the Little Hawks to an eventual team title while winning the heavyweight
bracket of the tournament.
The
confirmed Iowans that were in Iowa City for this visit include Brandon Wegher
of Sioux City Heelan, David Barrent of West Des Moines Valley,
Drew Clark of Marion, Jake Knott of Waukee, Eric May of
Dubuque Wahlert, Brett Van Sloten of Decorah, and Mitch Overstreet
of Bettendorf. All of these recruits spoke with the coaches, given a tour
of the football facilities, ate lunch in the press box, and were treated with an
Iowa upset over #6 rated Michigan State on the basketball court.
The
Hawkeyes will be holding their second Junior Day on February 2nd and have
already extended at least one invite. Bettendorf lineman Kyle
Lichtenberg received that invite after having a basketball game on Saturday
night. Iowa will be playing Ohio State so the recruits will get another
great opponent on the basketball court. Look for athletes like Keenan
Davis of Cedar Rapids Washington, Jordan Cotton of Mount Pleasant,
and Conor Boffeli to be in attendance if they do not have a basketball
game. Stay tuned as we will keep an on going list of invites for that day
as well.
One
athlete in the Class of 2009 with a lot of ability is Darion Howard of
Cedar Falls. This talented junior is receiving Division I interest for
both football and basketball. Howard has Northern Iowa recruiting him for
football, which may eventually be the favorite to land him at the next level.
For hoops, Howard has been mainly hearing from Illinois State. He hopes to
make visits to both schools but mentioned that he doesn't have a preference
between the two sports. The difference will eventually which sport offers
him the best opportunities.
Staying
in hoops, Ames guard Jesse Pritchard has helped his team off to a great
start this year. He still holds scholarship offers from William and Mary
as well as South Dakota. Outside of the offers, schools that have picked
up interest in this standout include Drake, Lehigh, Albany, Stanford, and North
Dakota State. Could the run that Drake has been on this year help them in
the recruiting process? Only time will tell but it would be a great get if
the Bulldogs were to extend an offer to this outstanding athlete.
Moving
to the Class of 2008, one of the most highly rated basketball targets that has
yet to make a college decision is Cedar Rapids Kennedy point guard Kaylon
Williams. This All Stater battled injuries during the off-season and
came back before he was expected. When speaking with Williams, he said he
is currently 80%. While he does not experience any pain, he mentioned that
he misses the feel he had before and that it would be something that would take
time to get back. It is scary how good he can be once he gets 100%.
As for recruiting, he has put it off until after the season. Williams
still has an offer from Evansville while other schools in the picture include
Iowa, Oregon State, and Boston. He said that was his goal was to help his
team to the State title and that would help give him the recognition he needs in
the recruiting process. Let me tell you that this kid can flat out play.
Indianola
quarterback John Teigland continues to see his stock rise in the
recruiting process. He took visits to Minnesota State Mankato and St.
Cloud State recently and both programs ended up extending him a scholarship.
While his team struggled on the field this fall, college coaches think very high
of Teigland. One school that may extend a late offer is Illinois State.
They currently have an offer out to their top quarterback target but Teigland
has been told that he is next in line. This senior is now in the process
of setting up a visit to Normal, Illinois to learn more about their program.
Switching
back over to a few junior football players, one athlete who has a chance to play
at a high level in college is Kelan Richardson of Southern Cal.
This three year started was named All State because of his play on the field and
will only be better in the future. The three main schools that are
recruiting him include Iowa, Iowa State, and Duke. Since Richardson has
been spending the winter focusing so much of his attention on wrestling, he has
been unable to take any recent visits or trips. He did mention that Reese
Morgan of Iowa is supposed to come to the school to speak with his head coach
about him and teammate Mark Blessington.
Waterloo
West athlete Ryan Edwards was disappointed with the way the football year
ended but that doesn't take away the type of ability he has. This junior
had a chance to make two visits to the University of Iowa this fall. He
saw them play Illinois and Minnesota. Both were visits that Edwards really
enjoyed. He has also been hearing from Duke in the recruiting process with
little changing since our last update on him. Edwards is keeping busy this
winter with basketball and will continue to do so.
One
quick baseball note. Davenport Assumption athlete Willie Argo, who
currently holds an offer from Northern Iowa, has received his second baseball
scholarship. This time it is from Northwestern in Illinois. This
academic powerhouse is working on landing Argo and his skills on the baseball
diamond. While Argo is spending the winter wrestling, he has had a chance
to get off to some baseball camps and that attention will only help his stock.
The fact that he is a four sport athlete hurts him just because of the showcases
he misses because of other commitments.
