The End Zone. The End Zone is for Iowa prep fans only. Whatever is said in The
End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. This edition focuses mainly on
the Class of 2008. It talks about players receiving new offers, making
college decisions, upcoming visits, and a lot of recruiting tidbits that are stocked throughout The
End Zone!
Since I have spent the last week breaking different commitments on the Off the
Record forum, the focus of this End Zone will be more on the commitments of many
of these athletes. These future college football players will be signing
their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday and we hope that they are able to
stay successful at the next level.
One
surprise that was posted this weekend was Cherokee wide receiver Chris
Campbell saying that he officially was headed to Iowa State as a walk on.
While I need to thread lightly on what I say about commitments heading to Iowa
State, Campbell made it pretty clear that he will be walking on in Ames after
taking a recent official visit. The most interest part is that the this
visit was not what sold him on playing at Iowa State. It was his dream to
play at the Division I-A level and he will be getting that chance.
Campbell felt he knew where he was going for a while, even if he didn't disclose
it in past articles.
Knoxville
linebacker Jesse Swanson did not surprise many when he ended up
committing to Truman State. This was the first school to bring him on
campus and to offer him during the recruiting process. While it took him
over a month to finally make that final call, it really did not come as a
surprise. Swanson was also looking at Central Missouri State and Missouri
Western during the recruiting process. In the end, the education that
Truman State can offer in college was tough to turn down. That has helped
them land a lot of Iowans in a number of sports.
Swanson will have a future teammate in Waverly-Shell Rock defensive back Kyle
Whitcher. This senior All State has pledged a commitment to Truman
State but he will be taking a different route while down there. Whitcher
had attention from schools likes Central, Wartburg, Upper Iowa, and Winona State
but he decided to take a walk on offer at Truman State. As mentioned with
Swanson, the main reason this senior is headed to Truman State is the education
that they offer. Whitcher plans to major in Exercise Science while down
there.
One
Iowan who will be headed out of the Midwest is Tipton linebacker Matt
O'Donnell. This three time All Stater will be getting an education at
Brown University while turning down a number of options. One interesting
aspect about his recruiting is that I was told by his father that Brown found
out about O'Donnell through IowaPreps.com and the Rivals.com website. He
was also considering Holy Cross but felt more comfortable with what Brown had to
offer. Education was a big pull for this standout as he will be graduating
college in a few years with an Ivy League education. I don't know if you
can beat that.
Bettendorf
lineman Matt Potter was an athlete who heard early from a lot of Division
I schools but ended up focusing late on Division II programs. This State
champion was able to garner an offer from Upper Iowa but took a scholarship from
Nebraska-Omaha. Potter also took a trip to Fort Hayes but knew in the back
of his mind that he wanted to play college football at UNO. Considering
the amount of Iowans they have brought in and the success that they have had on
the football field, expect good things to come to those that have committed
there. Another player talked about today that will be signing at
Nebraska-Omaha is Indianola quarterback John Teigland.
He
may have committed a while back but Gladbrook-Reinbeck lineman Tyler Luethje
made it clear that he wanted to go to South Dakota State. After
committing, he did take a visit to UNI but that was not enough to sway his
decision. This senior will join a number of Iowans at the college level
while playing for South Dakota State. Another player who will be joining
him is Ames lineman Alex Olinger. This senior had some major
scholarship offers and interest from Princeton before he committed. Look
for these two to be vital pieces of their line over the coming years.
And as Signing Day gets closer and closer, stay tuned here as IowaPreps.com will
be bring a blog all day and keeping users of who has signed where. This
