The End Zone. The End Zone is for Iowa prep fans only. Whatever is said in The
End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. It may seem like a ways off
but Signing Day for the Class of 2008 is now less than two months away.
Find out which players have set up official visits, added scholarship offers,
and are hosting college coaches on in home visits! There are a number of
recruiting tidbits stocked throughout this End Zone!
Southeast Polk defensive back Andrew Host helped his team this fall back
to the playoffs and was named All State along the way. That momentum has
carried over as he recently added his first scholarship offer. After
taking a visit to South Dakota this past weekend, the Coyotes became the first
school to offer Host. Like any athlete receiving their first offer, he was
excited. Host talked highly about the visit and the time he spent with
their players. Other schools keeping a close eye on this talented senior
include Nebraska-Omaha, Drake, UNI, and Southwest Minnesota State. Host
currently does not have any visits planned at this time.
One player who has not been mentioned much on this site has been Alta linebacker
Brady Randall. This athletic senior had a very good year on the
football field and that play has caught the eye of a number of college coaches.
Randall has set his first official visit to the University of Nebraska-Omaha for
January 19th and 20th. He has also been hearing a great deal from
Northwest Missouri State and plans to take an official visit there as well.
But with that school playing for another national championship, the coaches have
had to put recruiting on the back burner and are focusing on winning it all.
Other schools recruiting Randall include South Dakota State, Southwest Minnesota
State, and North Dakota.
Speaking
of Alta, Randall's teammate, running back Cody Nesbitt, is also a sought
after athlete in the recruiting process. South Dakota State has talked to
this All Stater about setting up an official visit but has yet to finalize
anything. Another school that is evaluating his tape is Southwest
Minnesota State. Other schools that are after Nesbitt include South
Dakota, North Dakota, Wartburg, and a few other smaller schools. There
have been no offers at this point but he did mention South Dakota and South
Dakota State at the top of his wish list.
Pleasant Valley may have struggled on the football field this season but
quarterback Brett Bueker finished up his career while starting the last
three years behind center. This All Conference selection has been the
first in-stater to receive a preferred walk-on offer from the coaches at Iowa
State. The Cyclones know that they can still get a lot of talented players
by landing walk ons and they hope to start that with Bueker. The other
main program he has been hearing from has been St. Cloud State. They will
be bringing Bueker on campus for an official visit on January 19th and 20th.
They have not mentioned scholarship offers but will likely discuss it once they
get him in officially.
WACO running back/linebacker Chayse Roth seems to be a player with his
eyes set on playing college football at a very high level. When I spoke
with him, this senior mentioned that he has had interest from Northern Iowa,
Iowa, Iowa Central, and a handful of Iowa Conference schools. Roth is not
looking hard at the Division III programs and would rather go the Junior College
route than playing small school football. Another program to keep an eye
on is Northwest Missouri State. While they are deep in their own season,
as mentioned above, they did send him a letter saying that the reason recruiting
has been put on hold has been their season. So Roth is unsure what
interest level the Bearcats have in him.
Lawton-Bronson surprised many while making a run to the State title game and a
lot of the credit has to do with the play of the line. The leader of that
line has been Cole Albright. This superb senior has been named All
State the last two seasons so it should come as no surprise that a lot of major
college programs are after him. South Dakota State, Wayne State, Iowa
Central, Buena Vista, Wartburg, Briar Cliff, and Southwest Minnesota State have
all stopped by the high school. Northwest Missouri State and South Dakota
State have both talked to him about setting up official visits. Those are
the two schools he mentioned that he wants to make sure he visits. Outside
of that, Albright wants to narrow the recruiting process down to five schools so
he can figure out where else he will visit.
One of the most interesting upcoming visits has to be that of Marshalltown wide
receiver Derek Williams. With it being very quiet on the recruiting
front at Northern Iowa, it appears as if Williams will be making his first
official visit this weekend to Cedar Falls. At this point, he is the only
known in-state visitor so it will be a story to keep a close eye on.
Williams also has a visit set to St. Cloud State on January 12th and 13th and is
in the process of setting up a trip to Augustana. It is surprising but
this Elite All Stater mentioned that those are basically the only three programs
recruiting him. Williams learned more about the St. Cloud State coaches
when they came in two weekends ago for an in home visit. They also spent
time visiting quarterback Tyler Peschong (Which was previously mentioned) that
same night.
Burlington lineman Grant Bickell was unable to help his team into the
playoffs but his size at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds is something that has helped him
catch the eye of colleges. He has been hearing from University of
Nebraska-Omaha, Wheaton College, Northwest Missouri State, Columbia College, and
Iowa Central Community College but recently took his first official visit to
Truman State. While no scholarship money was offered on his trip, the
coaches did tell him that they will be further evaluating him and other linemen
that they are recruiting. As for the trip itself, Bickell had a great time
and speaks highly of what the school has to offer overall.
The
State of Iowa had a lot of quarterbacks who put up big numbers and one of those
was Guy Martino of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The Cougars have been
having a number of coaches stop by the school over the last few weeks and that
will likely continue until Signing Day in February. The three schools that
Martino mentioned above the other programs include Truman State, South Dakota,
and Missouri State. A number of Iowa Conference schools are hoping to land
Martino and his big arm but he seems to be focusing on his bigger options.
As he mentioned multiple times, he is wide open right now.
Clear
Lake defensive lineman Jared Sholly ended the year with between eighteen
and twenty sacks. That helped him garner All State honors for the second
straight year and help the Lions back into the postseason. Now Sholly has
his attention focused on basketball and recruiting. He had his first in
home visit on December 5th with St. Cloud State and has his first official visit
planned for there on the weekend of December 15th and 16th. But schools
like UNI, Penn, South Dakota State, Princeton, Georgetown, and Iowa are still
recruiting him. At this point, Sholly does not have any offers but expect
him to leave that official visit with at least a partial ride. One
interesting fact about St. Cloud State is that they were able to snag Clear Lake
linebacker Thomas Gruis last winter. Could that factor into this
recruiting?
Knoxville
linebacker Jesse Swanson may not be a name that you hear very often on
the recruiting scene but this All State senior took his first official visit and
that led to his first scholarship offer. This senior spent the past
weekend visiting Truman State and left the visit with an offer in hand.
This senior does not plan on rushing a decision and has also been looking at
Waldorf, Upper Iowa, and Augustana. Swanson mentioned that he hopes to
visit Waldorf this upcoming weekend and could make more visits in the future.
Right now, his favorite should come as no surprise as it is Truman State.
Sioux
City North athlete Marcus James received an offer from Northern Iowa
during the summer and that remains his only scholarship. But there are
three other schools that have been showing this talented senior a lot of
attention. Those programs include South Dakota State, South Dakota, and
North Dakota State. James mentioned that he feels all three schools are
close to offering but none have yet to pull the trigger. South Dakota
State paid a visit to James and his family for an in home visit on December 5th.
While he really enjoyed that, he did mention that Northern Iowa stands out as a
favorite right now.
