Looking at a potential matchup of goliaths Waverly vs Wahlert. Anyone have any thoughts on that potential matchup. Obviously Cresco and West Delaware will have something to say about it in District final. For fun, let's say the big boys make it to Substate, anyone care to make a prediction?

Should be a tough matchup for both teams if they get this far, which they should. These two teams, which I think, along with Pella, Xavier, Chariton, Harlan and Spirit Lake, are the top teams in 3A, should not be in the same substate. But they are. It would be at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids in a double-header affair. It really depends how each team plays as far as turnovers and free throw shooting. If Phyfe and Pemsl nullify each other, then the rest of their teams will have to win it. I know that Waverly has four starters back and loads of experience, but I haven't seen them this year, like I did last year. Wahlert plays by far the tougher schedule and has eight really good players, all of whom have started this year for the Golden Eagles. I'm not going to make a prediction, but whoever plays the most error-free game will win. They've had four common foes (Cedar Falls, East and West Waterloo and CR Xavier), but some of these teams have changed over the course of the season, so comparative scores really don't mean much, except that Waverly played them all pretty tough, sometimes without Pfyfe. Waverly might have won a few more games if they would have had all their players, but so would have Wahlert, if they would have been healthy. Should be a GREAT game, if it happens. Might even be televised on KCRG- 92.9--109/Mediacom. I think these two teams have won five state championships in the past ten years or so.

Waverly is going to have a tough matchup in the District finals with Cresco. Cresco just beat Waverly a few games back. That was surprising loss as Cresco has been without Goodman, the 6'7" center. NE Iowa conference is down this year with the only decent competition for Waverly being Cresco. Waverly has very little size besides Phyfe which will be a problem if they make Substate final. My guess is Wahlert by 10.

I just hope they let them play this year. Last year Phyfe sat out a lot of the quarterfinal game at state on the bench with foul trouble. These are two really fine programs. Waverly should be very good again next year with Austin back and freshman Velky, and others. Believe it or not, Wahlert graduates absolutely everybody, and next year's leading returning scorer will have averaged less than a point a game. I think that is amazing. They do have a good soph team, though.

SL is a poorly coached overrated team , they will need a very easy matchup at state to win a game ( Glenwood ) after their freebie to Wells. Then they will get drubbed by Xavier or Wahlert ( Boone boys will do everything to accomadate them though , they have a Hawk )There are much better teams in 3a that will not make it than SL.
Doesn't matter Wahlert and Xavier with everyone else is playing for consolation title in 3a.
