Eric test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors and he writes, "For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine." Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9-gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles.
It will take you 4.5 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery. The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned, so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh. 16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery. $18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery. Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine that gets only 32 mpg. $3.19 per gallon divided by 32 Mpg = $0.10 per mile.
The gasoline powered car costs about $25,000 while the Volt costs $46,000 plus.

Lol I will continue to drive my gas hog Tahoe until I want to buy another SUV that runs on pure petrol, and I will make fun of the beta losers next to me at stop lights that drive those shitty cars with their coexist stickers glued all over the sides.
 
I think your price of KWH is off. $0.16 is probably closer, mine changes rates per summer/winter, winter it is as low as 0.077/kwh. My numbers are a few years old as I haven't checked lately. Most EV cars get 3-5 miles per KWH.

Twas about to make the same point; last I looked we were about $0.097 / kWh

We have no minimum, just a $0.53/day service charge

we have 2.75% local tax

and we have some surcharges that add $0.004/ kWh

Enviro tax is about 2.55%

So we are basically $0.0974/kWh plus $15.90/month service plus 5.3%
 
Again my electric cost data if is a few years old, my summer rates in Iowa were $0.09732 +0.055 fees for $.15232, winter rate start at $0.136 for first 500 kwh, $0.114 next 700 kwh ($147.80 total) so if your base usages is already that high adding a EV would be charging at $0.077/kwh, at worst I could find 3 miles per KWH = $0.026 per mile(summer would be 2x that). Filled my car(Elantra) yesterday with E15, after 120 miles it's indicated 46 mpg (really closer to 42) $3.829/gallon = $0.091/mile.

LOL, I have a 10 year old SUV and a 20 year old pickup. The truck was my dad's and he didn't drive it much as his health declined, so it only has 40k miles on it. I don't plan on buying a new car anytime soon, both are in good shape and thanks to covid and other things I don't drive that much these days.

All that said, I'm totally fine with alternative energy and electric/hybrid vehicles. What I am not ok with is when their proponents aren't truthful about the pitfalls and shortcomings of those technologies. Will they get better over time? I am sure they will. Also, let's not say it is a "green" alternative when mining for EV batteries is hazardous to the environment in those locations, or when the pollution from generating electricity is on par with vehicle emissions to accomplish the same job.

So folks can go buy and drive a EV or hybrid if they want. But don't give us the sanctimonious tripe that it is more environmentally friendly when all you've really done is move the pollution to a different source.
 
My mom recently sold my dad's truck 2002 WT with 63,000 miles, I think it was $8800. 2wd or I would have bought it.

Thinking about getting a truck since I don't have that one to borrow anymore. I like FFV, last weekend drove by a blender pump E85 was $2.68, E10 $4+, my previous FFV (Impala & Suburban) lost about 20% mpg between those 2 fuels. I'll put a half tank of E85 in any of my cars when the price is right.

Wife filled her then rogue the first time after not having the impala with a full tank of E85. I knew the next morning something was off because it didn't start quite as quick as normal. 15 mile later CEL came on because E85 runs at a 10:1 AFR, so the car thinks something is wrong because it's pumping more fuel in than it should for that much air. CEL generally comes on when Long Term Fuel Trim hits 30, goes away when you refill and bring the Ethanol % down below 50% with all of the cars I've owned the last 15-20 years.

E30 is I think the best blend, Fords 3.5 Eco boost engine picks up 50 hp just changing fuel. In a fleet delivery truck test, E30 picked up .5 mpg(18 vs 18.5) because of the higher octane so the engine computer wouldn't retard timing when under load due to detonation as much as with 87 octane.
 
I’ve got a jeep that gets 10-12 mpg. It’s a v8 (AMC 360) with an automatic transmission and an Atlas transfer case spinning 37” Super Swampers. I don’t care if gas gets to $10/ gallon, I won’t be caught dead in one of those pussyPrius type cars.

The hybrids are probably okay safe cars but not the all electric. My son owned a Tesla of which he was extremely proud. He had a fender bender and the side that was hit folded up like tinfoil. He said it wasn’t even a bad fender bender. The metal was a high priced very strong metal and was was very light weight and thin to cut down the weight of the car. It is good in ever respect but compression. It has very little resistance against being crushed in because of the thinness. He got rid of it immediately.
