Dike-New Hartford @ PCM, Monroe
Kuemper Catholic, Carroll vs Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at Denison
Union, La Porte City @ North Fayette Valley
Williamsburg @ Mount Vernon

Thoughts and opinions on these matchups here!

Round 1 went just as expected, but I think round 2 may throw in some wrinkles.

I think the best game in the mix is Dike and PCM. I see BHRV easily handling Kuemper and Mt. Vernon easily handling Williamsburg. NFV and Union will be closer this time around.

I agree with you entirely! We'll see if the top rated defense in the state can hold up to without a doubt the top back in 2A this year...I see PCM taking that one as the year drags on we'll see how many more carries Trent Johnsons body can take as he is avergaing 28 carries a game..that puts alot of hurt on a kids body I feel like.

Dike-New Hartford @ PCM, Monroe: I'll take DNH 35-14. PCM plays in a poor district and won't be able to keep up.

Kuemper Catholic, Carroll vs Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at Denison: Don't know much about these squads, but BHRV seems to be the popular pick out west. I'll take them 27-20.

Union, La Porte City @ North Fayette Valley: Two of the top three teams in 2A meeting in the quarters. NFV dominated the regular season game, but Union will come back stronger. It won't be enough, NFV wins 20-17.

Williamsburg @ Mount Vernon: Mt Vernon won easily in the first matchup. I don't see anything changing. Mt Vernon 42-21.

I dont know anything about PCM, but Trent Johnson is the rel deal ! Last week vs. SEV every time it looked like they had him bottled up, he would shoot out of line for 75 yd TD. I would think PCM's defense is better but I won't be surprised if he runs for 4 TD and 350!

I think everybody had this same reaction the first time they saw Mr. Johnson play ;)

Union played a good game
Nfv unfortunately had an uphill battle before the start with only 1 starting rb and he got hurt beginning of 3rd quarter
Had 5 starters out in total for offense

Yeah, if those starters would have been healthy it definitely would have been a closer game. Definitely didn't imagine Union would control the game the way they did.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 49, Kuemper Catholic, Carroll 28
Dike-New Hartford 54, PCM, Monroe 14
Mount Vernon 42, Williamsburg 32
Union, La Porte City 28, North Fayette Valley 12

Not too surprised to see Union upend NFV the second time around. I didn't know about the injuries for NFV, but even so you knew that Union would play NFV much tougher this time around, and likely "not do some of the things they did last time." Union is a very good team, which makes the score of the first meeting even more unfathomable.

Disappointing to see things end this way for NFV. This senior class won a lot of football games, and sure didn't lose many.

Union/MV should be a heck of a game. Union could very well make a run to the title.

It's similar to Union's 2011 3A state title run. They had to avenge a regular season loss to Maquoketa in the playoffs, then in the semis they had to play ADM who was a top offense in the class. I see Mt. Vernon similar to ADM in that they have a robust, high powered offense.

Union is so well coached it's hard to beat them twice in the same season.

I'm gonna disagree
If even Vaughn would have been missing it would have been a different game
Nfv had kids that only handled ball if they were up by 30 points
That's how it goes though with injury I get that

When any key players are missing a team will always be impacted. Vaughn missed two games earlier in the season and the sophomore back-up filled in well (really didn't miss a beat), but it's even more important to stay healthy come playoffs. Union made several adjustments, NFV didn't benefit from an extra week of prep, and Union was healthier than in the last meeting, so there were other factors that also helped lead to the different result, but injuries for NFV likely did result in how lopsided this recent meeting went. Would h e definitely been closer otherwise.

The two leading rushers for NFV in this game had, as far as I can tell, zero carries for the season prior to this week. Ouch, that wouldn't bode well for any team this deep into the playoffs.

Speaking of rushing the ball... is anyone going to be able to bottle up Johnson from DNH? Gee whiz, that kid is putting up some incredible numbers. He has averaged 248 yards a game, and leads the state in rushing by over 600 yards.

He is definitely the guy you have to focus on for Dike. It looks like in Dike's two losses he had nearly 150 yards in each - he seems to be over 225 in almost all other games. "You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him". Their toughest challenge will come in the next. I think he'll get his yards (at least 150) and to beat them you'll need an offense that can keep up.

Gonna have to throw my two cents in here. Im sorry, but to say that the #1 factor of Union winning this game was anything but NFV injuries is completely delusional. NFV had literally their entire starting backfield wiped with injuries (which is hard to do considering their Wing T offense) and had four more starters go down during the game. Two leading rushers had zero carries going into the game if that says anything. Tough to see their destiny end with a nightmare of injuries especially when nearly all their starters were Seniors. Good luck to Union in the Semis, but they ran into some very good fortune. A healthy NFV could have very well came away with another convincing win.

Football is all about staying healthy. For every team. Many of NFVs wins came against injury depleted teams too. Union could have made a serious run last year but was missing several starters in the playoffs. Union moves on and I wish them good luck. Rooting for D-4 but I think MV will be tough to beat.

The other part of this NFV/Union game is that the two leading rushers in the game had zero carries coming into the game. Shame on NFV for allowing that to happen. They had plenty of opportunities to get them carries throughout the year. I believe a lot of their games were lopsided victories. Perfect example of football being a team sport and not just a couple of guys.

Pretty ignorant post if you ask me. Do you know the situation in NFV? Do you know why these two kids never had a carry before their final game? I'll make one statement and one assumption

1. NFV has good coaches who know what they're doing. I absolutely give them the benefit of the doubt.

2. Did you notice that 4 of their top 6 rushers didn't record any stats for the game? That tells me they didn't play at all for whatever reasons (injury, suspended, who knows). I would assume their next best running back is a Sophomore (Massman) who got plenty of carries on the JV team this year. They needed him after others were injured and he stepped up the best he could. As for Thomas, he's a Senior who has never touched the ball all season in any capacity. I'm guessing with a "what do we have to lose" attitude, the coaches thought they'd give a Senior a great end to his high school football career, maybe when the game was in hand I don't know.

Again, I have no idea, but I would definitely come to those assumptions before thinking NFV has bad coaches who don't know what they're doing.
