Running up the score

Just wondering how you people feel about teams running up the score. When should the winning team in a rout call off the dogs?

It depends on how often it happens. If it's one or two games a year call them off pretty quick, if it's every game the players have to get used to playing more for conditioning so maybe build up later in the year. You'll also see some scores where the worst team in the district plays the district champ better than playoff qualifiers because of when teams let off the gas.

I personally think that anytime in the second half after the running clock has started would be good timing. However, the point made earlier about frequency and conditioning of your starters (to prepare for playoffs) should also be considered and may sway that approach.

I would have no issue with the argument that it should be up to the team on the losing end. When they "give up", the other team can "give up". Not my style, but can at least understand it.

Wasn't the reason the 50 point mercy rule was abolished was because coaches complained about not being allowed to develop younger players and games were shortened costing the host school to lose concession revenue? The coaches wanted the ability to manage the game. Hence the running clock after a 35 point lead in the second half. Some coaches are better at managing the game than others. And some don't care.

Really depends on what you mean by running up the score. Most coaches take out there starters after a continuous clock has started. But it depends on depth of team, injuries, and so on.
