The top-ranked Regina boys' soccer team went from having one loss to three losses without playing a match.

Regina announced in a statement Thursday it will be forced to forfeit its first two wins of the season due to the use of an academically ineligible player.

Class 1A No. 1 Regina is now 2-3 on the season following the two forfeits and an 8-0 win over Davenport West on Thursday.

The two wins, an 8-0 victory over Mid-Prairie and a 3-0 win over Mount Pleasant, will now be listed as 1-0 wins for the opposing teams.

"The Regina boys' soccer roster was not checked properly for academic ineligibility at the end of first semester, which resulted in this error," Regina activities director Tim Foley said. "It was my duty to not only check the roster, but to have previously notified the student, parents and coaches of the player's ineligibility. The player and coaches were not at fault in any way. We were in no way trying to circumvent the rules of the IHSAA. It was an error of procedure by myself that resulted in the outcome."

Foley said the error was discovered on April 15 and the Iowa High School Activities Association was notified on April 16.

The IHSAA gave Regina official notice of the forfeitures on April 21.

All statistics accumulated in the two forfeit matches will not change.

Regina has won back-to-back Class 1A titles and five of the last six 1A crowns.

The Regals went 16-3 on their way to last year's 1A title.

Regina will play three matches in a tournament Saturday at Tuma Sports Complex in Cedar Rapids.
