This is a big game for 1A football in the state of Iowa. Regina has a chance to make a statement. What are your thoughts on this game and the potential outcome?

I don't think any other 1A schools are looking at this as an opportunity for Regina to "win one for the team (class)" by beating a highly-ranked 3A school.........

Could be wrong though.

I think the game will come down to whether Xavier can force turnovers and play with a lead. If they have to play catch-up then I'd say Regina takes it.

i could care less about Class 1A in this game.

Regina should be playing up anyway, so I view this as an eat what you kill game for the Regals.

I don't know Blame WB had a better recruiting year this year, maybe they should be playing up :)

All I'm saying is that this game could earn some respect for the smaller schools. All lot of the big time powers in 3A and 4A assume they could walk all over smaller schools just because they are bigger schools. Not always they case, and I think this will be proven on Friday.

we petitioned for 4A

Can you believe the state told us 'no'...??

:)

They at least said yes to the district request and elimination of the sister district concept. :)

a) no idea what you are talking about

b) i am sure that the "sisters" will meet in round 3 if all things go to plan for both

North Cedar is the only team that can muck that up.

Go Knights! :)

WB v Regina in semis would be great!

Personally, I think the following 4 teams should be in the semis if: a) they earn it, b) the IHSAA was smart

ICR
SWinn
FDSE
WB

I going with Regina on this one I think. 14+ points. They're bigger and more physical on the line. Quarterback is on point.

I know West and City High fans like to poke fun at "little brother"....but then Regina does beat them at the lower grade levels in football.

That final four sounds good to me. Some good football to be played. Trusting the boys in Boone to do the right thing? Well the district alignments they came up with without any lobbying or input from long time coaches where a team like Regina doubles their travel when there are so many schools much closer shows that if they are left on their own they will mess it up.

1. Regina absolutely kicked the crap out of a Solon team that reached the 3A semis last year, on the road. I've got a hard time believing they could top that kind of statement win, regardless.

2. A Regina win this week wouldn't say much at all about Class 1A, IMO. Most people already set Regina aside from the rest of the class. Regina beating Xavier wouldn't have the same kind of wow factor that, say, a South Winn win over Xavier would have.

I definitely agree with your points there. I just think it is funny that many of the schools in the bigger classes (especially 4A) assume they could beat Regina because they are 1A. I know a lot of players at IC West and City High that assume this. They make fun of the 1A schools. Yet when Regina tries to schedule them, they are too scared to accept the challenge. What's even funnier is that the Regina JV beat IC West High's JV by 3 touchdowns a few weeks ago.

Also, a strong argument could be made that in many recent years the best overall team in the state has been in the smaller classes. Solon (2A) during the James Morris era (2008-2010), and Regina (2A) in 2011, and quit possibly 1 or 2 other years since then.

Regina would have at least had a decent argument last year, although I would still have picked Dowling as the best. Regina's defense was insanely good last year.

Which is clearly normal for a school that is classified in 1A.

It's a lose\lose for the big schools. If they win - well they were supposed to. If they lose - well you can figure it out.

Also, Regina is a 1A* team (don't be fooled by dumb asterisks!).

How do you know that ICW and ICH were on Regina's list?

Numbers play a part in football, Xavier along with 4A schools platoon kids in and out. Western Dubuque (the only 3A school to beat Xavier) showed this - they were able to match fresh bodies with fresh bodies (WD is the 2nd largest 3A school by BEDS).

I hope Regina can pull it off, if they can get a two score lead into the 4th I think they win.

Who wins?

The fans win. High school football wins. Should be a great game, best of luck to both teams! I'll be looking forward to seeing the highlights

They did request a game with West High this year, but West declined.
what would a 4A program gain by playing a 1A school?
A great game, and a fun in-town matchup that would get the players and fans on both sides excited.

Too bad it sounds like Pat Harty got fired today. He probably would have had a nice write up about the game. The Press-Citizen is a mess.

Playing a quality opponent ?
This would be true, but being an Iowa fan you should know that it's a matter of perception. Just look at the argument about Iowa State. Heck, let's wait and see what will come if we lose to North Dakota State in 2016. I'm sure Iowa will feel great about at least having played a quality opponent from a lower division..........yep.

If Regina wants to play 4A schools to prove how good their program is, then they need to convince more Johnson County natives (and if that doesn't work, then try harder) to go to their school to bump up their classification to more accurately reflect their varsity football program. Until then, they'll just have to keep beating their JV and freshmen teams...............

of course he would.

he has a strange obsession with Regina and Drew Cook. (please do not take this out of context)
