this is not meant to be snarky, I actually want to know - would you trade in the basketball for football titles or are you content with losing at football as long as you keep winning state in basketball?

Conference strengths per sport is an interesting topic. Here's a few numbers to chew on...

Championships Since 2000 - 2001 School Year
Baseball - CIML 13, MVC 1, MRAC 1, MAC 0
Basketball - MVC 8, CIML 4, MAC 2, MRAC 1
Bowling - MAC 4, MVC 1, CIML 1, MRAC 0
Cross Country - CIML 6, MVC 6, MAC 4, MRAC 0
Golf - CIML 11, MAC 5, MVC 0, MRAC 0
Football - CIML 12, MVC 2, MAC 2, MRAC 0
Soccer - MVC 8, CIML 6, MAC 1, MRAC 0
Swimming - MVC 7, MAC 4, CIML 4, MRAC 0
Tennis - MVC 7, CIML 6, MAC 2, MRAC 0
Track - MVC 9, CIML 4, MAC 2, MRAC 0
Wrestling - MVC 3, MAC 2, CIML 2, MRAC 0 (Waverly, Lewis Central, Oskaloosa won 8)

Over that time period, the CIML has won 43% of all state championships, MVC has won 33%, MAC 18% and MRAC 1%. Other schools won the remaining 5%.

In the CIML, 14 different schools have won a title (78% of the conference). In the MVC 11 schools have a title (79%). In the MAC it is 8 (80%). And for the MRAC it is 2 (40%).

I don't think your numbers added up SEP so I recalculated what you listed. I believe there are 135 titles in that time period. Using the champs listed by you, the winning %'s are CIML 43%, MVC 39%, MAC 17% and MRAC 1%. I am a numbers guy so to break down the numbers differently I wondered what the Titles on average per school in the conference would look like. The CIML has 19 schools, MVC 14, MAC 9 and MRAC 7. Using the total titles divided by the conference school numbers we find that the MVC averaged 3.7 titles per school (tps), CIML had 3.1 tps, MAC 2.6 tps and MRAC 0.3. This seems to point to the MVC conference as being the most prolific in winning championships. I know we can twist numbers to say almost anything, but it adds a little flavor to the discussion.

First of all, let me make a correction (already posted with above counts). I left out Golf. That's 16 more titles to add to your 135 count and then don't forget the 8 titles that were won by schools outside of the large school conferences in wrestling. Since those titles could have been won by a CIML, MVC, MAC or MRAC team then they should count in the total. That brings the total to 159 state titles.

So now I'll use your formula of total titles per school (correct me if I get this wrong).
CIML Titles - 69 / 19 schools = 3.6 tps (even with the 19th school only being online for a couple years now. Using 18 schools would be 3.8 tps)
MVC Titles - 52 / 14 schools = 3.7 tps
MAC Titles - 28 / 10 schools = 2.8 tps
MRAC Titles - 2 / 7 schools = 0.3 tps

The CIML represents 38% of the 50 schools listed yet won 43% of the state titles.
The MVC represents 28% of the 50 and won 33% of the titles.
The MAC is 20% and won 18%.
The MRAC is 14% and won 1%.

So the CIML and MVC both over achieved by 5%. Throw in your tps numbers and that 78% / 79% of each conference has won a title and basically both those 2 conferences are mirror images of each other when it comes to success. Like you said, numbers and stats can be spun in just about any direction to support your opinion.

Don't get all uppity now. I just used your numbers. No doubt the CIML and MVC are both great conferences. I would also point out that adding the 8 wrestling titles outside of the conferences listed only further skews the data so they are better left out.

Didn't intend to come off uppity. I just enjoy looking at the numbers. I actually have a spreadsheet filled with data from all state titles since 2000... both boys and girls. It's interesting to see the trends. Looking at blocks of 5 year trends...

2000-2004: CIML won 52% of all state tiles, MVC won 28%, MAC 17% and MRAC 2%
2005-2009: CIML won 38%, MVC 36%, MAC 23%, MRAC 2%
2010-2014: CIML 44%, MVC 39%, MAC 17%, MRAC 0%
2015: CIML has won all 3 titles so far this year

Pretty much even between CIML and MVC since 2005. But on the girls side, it looks like the CIML is really starting to separate itself.

Girls
2000-2004: CIML 39%, MVC 50%, MAC 11%, MRAC 0%
2005-2009: CIML 67%, MVC 25%, MAC 4%, MRAC 4%
2010-2014: CIML 64%, MVC 22%, MAC 14%, MRAC 0%
2015: CIML has won all 3 titles so far this year

It's also interesting to see the dominance per sport by conference since 2000-2001 school year:

CIML dominance - Baseball, Golf, Football
MVC dominance - Basketball, Swimming, Track
MAC dominance - Bowling
The other sports show some balance between the conferences.
