How did the football season go for your team?
"We went 5-4 this year, but I believe we had the potential to have a better record than this. With this next season, our football team has a lot of talent we are bringing up from the sophomore level. With the right off-season training and mindset, we have the potential to do some great things in combination with our now junior class."
What are your workout plans now going forward?
"Personally this off-season, I am going to become a quicker and stronger version of myself. I also believe my team could use a leader in the weight room, practice field, and classroom so I have set it upon myself to be the best I can and to show my colleagues what it takes to be a champion. As far as the specifics go, it comes down to speed. Speed kills. That’s why we do speed drills, like hills."
What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
"This off-season calls for a whole lot of weights and 7-on-7. In the meantime, other sports my teammates participate in teach important lessons and give your body a different set of challenging movements to learn. They all apply to football so being a multi-sport athlete is good for the soul."
How do you believe your team will be next season?
"My team has the potential to do some great things. Western Dubuque football is ready to put their name on the map. We are a very competitive group that has just about everyone out for three or more sports, which really says something about the willingness to learn and the growth mindset we possess."
What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
"Next year, we may be dropping to 3A which my coach says is possibly just as competitive. We would return to 3A with teams like North Scott and Clinton. We may be kicking up some old rivalries that had been cut out from our more recent schedule. There are definitely some horses down in 3A, but we will be ready when the time comes."
Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
"My college plans do involve me playing sports, and I am looking to playing football. I am still open to the idea of potentially wrestling or throwing in track and field for a college. I have a higher interest in football than the other two, but I find it refreshing to learn new things."
What colleges have been recruiting you?
"At the moment, I have received the typical invites to camps and events by local and some out-of-state colleges. The majority of these letters and emails pertain to track and field. I imagine they are based off of my performance at the state track and field meet, where I placed 10th as a sophomore in the shot put in class 4A. I have taken it upon myself to write letters to some universities that I am interested in. I plan on sending them after bowl season for the sake of the coaches and to make a better first impression."
Have you made any college trips yet?
"All of the trips I have made have been unofficial."
What camps are you going to this summer?
"I get excited just from the thought of summer camps. This is because camps are the perfect opportunity to better myself by learning new techniques and skills that I can add to my arsenal. Just meeting the coaches is worth the trip. I plan on attending University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Illinois University, and other football camps that I see as a good opportunity."
Did you have a favorite college growing up?
"Growing up, I would consider myself a Hawkeye fan. Now that my sister is playing sports at UNI, I find myself to be in more of a neutral stance towards a favorite college. That’s why I can find time to cheer on any Iowa team. For the fact of the matter is that it’s Iowa vs. the world, but I will side with the Panthers when it comes to in-state games."
