Anyone have thoughts on a preseason top 10?

OABCIG drops down to 1A and will have the best player in the class in DeJean at quarterback.

Van Meter
West Branch
Mount Ayr
SSC

what about traditional powers like Pella Christian, Cascade, and DNH?

Seems like OABCIG should be 1 and Van Meter at 2 and then not sure after those two teams

(DeJean is the best *athlete* in the class. Best player is pretty relative)

WB has to replace 16 starting positions.

Jeff Bowie and Gavin Hierseman aren't among the 16, and that's good. As is having an All-state PK. The Bears are probably top 10, not top 3. If the season plays out, and the Bears can stay healthy, they have a shot at running the regular season table.

Cascade: always finds a way to be competitive and gritty. They graduated a bunch as well. Not top 10.

PC: they had about 4000 kids on their roster last year. Ha. Numbers usually equate to growth. Growth equates to success, usually. Probably worthy of top 10.

Best athlete is a more fair point. Defensive coaches in 1A will have quite the headache figuring out how to slow him down.

1A will be a good competitive class again this season and maybe will have a couple surprise teams make a push late in the season.

Any sleeper teams?

Osage may make some noise this year with their new head coach, Torian Wolf. He took Rockford from perennial bottom feeder to state runner-up his first year in charge and followed that up year two reaching the playoffs again, proving it wasnt a huge fluke. Osage definitely isn't a bottom feeder, but also not a perennial powerhouse. It will be interesting to see how Osage does with their new coach.

congrats. your squad was outscored 111-28 the last two years after making the playoffs. Is that the momentum that helps propel them after they've graduated most of the talent from those two squads>>?

Ease up GoEagles. Osage is kind of new to the party discussion. They had great facilities and fans when we went there in 2018. 172 mile drive and we were welcomed with open arms.

Osage lost a good coach in Matt Finn as well, Coach Finn and Coach Wolf have different styles so it will be interesting to see what they look like, they also have a slightly tougher district mate (on paper) in Columbus.

I am not a fan of Osage. Not by a long shot. I am just aware of the fact that they are bringing in a new coach that has proven to have success in turning a team around, and Osage is nowhere near the level of bad that Rockford was.

SK has easily a top 5, possibly top 3 backfield in the state. Line will be a question mark after losing a lot of hogs up front

Wasn’t sure what they had coming back after Stout graduated but they’ll have two senior backs leading the charge as well as a junior qb that earned a lot of experience last season. They should be a tough squad this season with the offensive line being a key part to get figured out.

Such a gimmicky system though. It never works when they run into a good team that figures it out.

Agreed, Mediapolis can attest to that. When the system was extremely successful late 90s to the early 2000s they not only had the personnel, but a hall of fame coach to lead them. It takes a perfect storm to make that type of offense a legitimate title contender.

The advantage that I think the spinner back offense gives SK is confidence, the kids there know that players before them have had great success with it, and they don't want to fail to uphold the tradition. It's not really that complex of an offense, if you read the guards they take you to the ball. But the moving parts make average LBs struggle to make good reads. I would agree that good teams can usually slow it down pretty well. Coach Howard formerly of SK and now at Webster City has always had kids that block very well, and backs that are big physical and run hard.

OABCIG has to be the overwhelming favorite. I would put Van Meter in the top 5. Potthoff was a solid quarterback for them for the last couple of years. Anyone know who will step into that spot? They should have another solid running back.

Van Meter only returns 4 starters - granted all 4 were All-District performers (OL-Gilliland & Olsen 1st Teamers; LB-Sieck 2nd Team, LB-Barck Hon Men) but plenty of unknowns. Top 10, but not top 5.

Was the Waukee Transfer Portal closed for this year?

Well, looks like I was right abo
